Flatliners - remake (2017, D: Niels Arden Oplev) S: Page, Dobrev, Luna
From Deadline.com
Ben Ripley, who most recently penned Source Code, has been signed to a development deal with Sony to write a contemporary reimagining of Flatliners, the 1990 Joel Schumacher drama about medical students who dabble too far into near-death experiments that starred then-emerging actors like Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts and William Baldwin, as well as Kevin Bacon. Maybe Sony thinks a redo can launch a few more young careers in the same manner? Ripley penned the April release Source Code for Summit Entertainment; the film was a surprise hit and has made $123.3 million worldwide to date.

Re: Sony developing Flatliners update. Hires Source Code writer
I remember Flatliners being huge back when it came out. I remember trying to revisit it on cable years later and thinking it didn't hold up as well as I remembered. Maybe it could use some sort of revamp. You could certainly take it to different places and go different directions than the original with the basic storyline.

Ripley did a good job with Source Code, so I'm sure he will bring a cool new spin to this.
Obviously since he was just hired to pen a script, this project is still a long way from being filmed.

Ellen Page is in talks to star in a reboot of the 1990 sci-fi thriller “Flatliners” for Sony.
Niels Arden Oplev, director of the original Swedish “Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” is on board to helm from a screenplay by Ben Ripley. David Blackman and Laurence Mark are producing.
The original, which was toplined by Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Bacon, revolves around a group of medical students who journey into the afterworld to find meaning in their own lives before being resuscitated in the nick of time. As expected, the experiments soon go awry.
Page has been busy promoting her drama “Freeheld,” which opened in limited release last weekend, in which she stars opposite Julianne Moore and Steve Carell. Page also produced the gay rights drama. Her movie “Into the Forest,” co-starring Evan Rachel Wood, also recently premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, where it was acquired by A24.

Having wrapped “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” Diego Luna is in negotiations to star opposite Ellen Page in Sony’s re-imagining of the 1990 sci-fi thriller “Flatliners,” TheWrap has exclusively learned.
Sony declined to comment, while representatives for Luna did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
Niels Arden Oplev (“Mr. Robot,” “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) will direct from a script by Ben Ripley (“Source Code”). Laurence Mark (“I, Robot”) will produce with Michael Douglas. Production is slated to start in early July.
“Flatliners” follows a group of medical students who experiment with “near death” experiences that involve past tragedies until the dark consequences begin to jeopardize their own lives.
The cast of the new “Flatliners” movie is expected be more inclusive and international than Joel Schumacher‘s original film, which starred Kiefer Sutherland, Julia Roberts, Kevin Bacon, William Baldwin and Oliver Platt. This time around, the core cast will feature three women and two men.
Luna is gearing up for a busy 2016 campaign, as not only does he star in Disney and Lucasfilm’s “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” but he co-stars alongside Mel Gibson in “Blood Father” and has a major role in Ana Lily Amirpour‘s dystopian love story “The Bad Batch.”
Additionally, Luna recently wrote, directed and produced the Sundance drama “Mr. Pig,” which stars Danny Glover and Maya Rudolph. He’s represented by WME and attorney Robert S. Wallerstein.

If they must remake something, I would rather that they remake mediocre films where there's room for improvement rather than beloved films that are still classics enjoyed by all generations.

Niels Oplev means I'll see it regardless of what it is.

I'd take Ellen Page over Julia Roberts any day of the week.
The original wasn't great, so this has potential to be an improvement.

Well I'll definitely check it out now:

EXCLUSIVE: Nina Dobrev exited The Vampire Diaries last year after six seasons to tackle the big screen full-on, and the actress looks to have surgically scored. Dobrev is in talks to star in Sony’s reboot of the sci-fi medical thriller Flatliners opposite Ellen Page and Diego Luna.

EXCLUSIVE: One of the original members from the iconic movie Flatliners is coming back for more. Kiefer Sutherland is joining the cast of the reboot of the 1990 film after schedules were worked out for the actor to do both his new ABC series Designated Survivor and the Sony feature film. Sutherland, who will play a seasoned doctor in the redo, joins Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton and Kiersey Clemens. His deal is not completely closed but he has committed to doing it.

Well, that's good news. However, if he's juggling Flatliners and Designated Survivor, it probably means he won't have time to fit in an appearance in 24: Legacy, which was rumored.

Designated Survivor is only going to be 13 episodes right? I think Flatliners is starting to film this month. His role could maybe only amount to a maybe 1 to 1.5 weeks of filming. If he is on 24, it probably wouldn't be towards the end of that season and only a small role, so he could hopefully balance 2 to 3 days on that while doing Designated Survivor.
