From Emmy Award-winning executive producer and creator Seth MacFarlane (FAMILY GUY, "Ted") THE ORVILLE is a live-action, one-hour space adventure series set 400 years in the future that follows the exploits of The U.S.S. Orville, a mid-level exploratory spaceship. Its crew, both human and alien, face the wonders and dangers of outer space, while also dealing with the problems of everyday life. Ed's enthusiasm for his new position is dampened when his ex-wife, KELLY GRAYSON (Adrianne Palicki), is assigned to be his First Officer. While on their first routine mission, the Orville crew is ambushed by the Krill, a vicious alien race, who are bent on stealing a device that can cause time to accelerate in the all-new "Old Wounds" episode of THE ORVILLE, the first part of the two-night special series premiere airing Sunday, Sept. 10 (8:00-9:00 PM ET LIVE to all Time Zones), immediately following the NFL Doubleheader on FOX. Please Note:
The Orville will premiere this Sunday (9/10/17) at approximately 8pm ET/5pm PT live on both coasts after the NFL on FOX doubleheader.
Meaning there is a strong chance the games will run long. Posting this early for anyone interested in watching to pad their DVRs if you don't plan to watch this live.
Another new episode will air the following Sunday (9/17/17) also after another NFL doubleheader. Be prepared to pad your DVRs for that week as well. The series will eventually move to Thursdays for episode 3 on 9/21/17.

This must be really good for Fox to be pimping it as hard as they have behind football. I'm looking forward to it.

I am going to wait to hear from you good people as to whether this is worth my time or not. I feel like Galaxy Quest already did this, and probably much, much better.

The ads I have seen for this make it look it has the potential to be absolutely terrible. That being said, I will give it a few episodes as I am a fan of both Scott Grimes and Adrianne Palicki.

MacFarlane made Fox a boatload of cash with Family Guy, and therefore earned enough capital to do anything he wants, so the network is humoring him by indulging this elaborate Trek cosplay.

It's not a comedy, it's a drama. The FOX marketing is trying to trick us into thinking it's a comedy to watch.

If it was 30 minutes of slapstick comedy the critics would say it needs to be more serious.. that's just how it goes.

Wait, this seriously isn't a comedy? The commercials make it look like a half hour slapstick comedy. Might check this out if the reviews are good. Not a fan of MacFarlane, but I like Grimes and Palicki.

This is so bizarre that this is actually a straight scifi drama in the vein of ST: TNG. The marketing is fully going for the Galaxy Quest vibe. Firefly managed to meld scifi dramedy well, but The Orville seems very off tonally. I guess we'll see.

I don't know, MacFarlane comes off like a douche as an actor. I don't think he can pull this off.

Add me to the list who thought this was a straight comedy. Still will be watching.

I have no idea what to think of this, but Ill give it a try because I love the genre and I like McFarlane. This could be really good, really bad, or so bad it's good.

Such odd marketing. I mean people will watch expecting Family Guy humor, not get it, and what, be so compelled by the story that they'll keep watching? Brand it for what it is or do a comedy instead if that's what you want to market. ridiculous. Palicki can't catch a break.

I thought it was a straight comedy too. IMDB lists it as comedy/drama/sci-fi. I'm still going to check it out but kind of hope it doesn't take itself too seriously.

Marketing fail!
Why would they dupe people like this? No one likes being lied to and misled. How much we like something is tied up in expectations, and they're building very false expectations here.

Well I don't think I've seen an add which said it was a comedy. I think everyone just assumed with it being MacFarlane and Fox.

The ads definitely make it look like it's not taking itself seriously and seems like a comedy. I wouldn't be surprised if Fox is purposely making it look that way because of MacFarlane who's mostly known for comedy.

When I saw the first comment here about the show not really being a comedy, I didn't believe it, but after reading that review, it seems to be the case.
I was only recording this because I thought it could be a fun, breezy comedy to add to my schedule. I'll still give it a try, but my expectations are now in check.
If your ads prominently feature nothing but comedic scenes, I don't think most of the time you need to specify it's a comedy. Well, I guess maybe it was needed in this case.

Right, there's no way that all of us just assumed it was a comedy because of McFarlane. The previews clearly show mostly comedic aspects of it, which is why most people, I assume, think this is going to be more Galaxy Quest than Star Trek. Even that promo picture in the OP suggests comedy.
I mean, I like sci fi so I wouldn't mind if it's good, just all signs point to no so far.
edited to add: actually, watching that preview in the OP again, I feel like this has to be a comedy with dramatic elements, it just makes no sense otherwise.
