Re: The 13th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Threa

Follow my daily watchlist videos during the challenge at youtube "Retro Horror"

First-Time Viewing: 45 | Blu-Ray: 48 | DVD:21 | TV: 1 | Streaming: 11 | Theater 1 | Commentaries Listened To:

Sept 30th

1. The Blob (1958) 6/10. Blu Ray. Steve McQueen early role. He was paid 3K but could have taken 10% of profits. The film made 4M. The film drags with a lot of static dialogue shots.

2. The Phantom Carriage (1921) 8/10. Blu Ray. A fascinating, complex ghost story and morality play. Technically this film pushed boundaries. Must viewing.

3. The Strangers (2008) 6/10. Showtime TV. Much hyped home invasion film. I enjoyed the build up, but found the ending unsatisfying.

Oct 1st

4. Cronos (1994) 7/10 Blu Ray. Del Toro's first film is a fascinating exploration into eternal life and beautifully shot. needs a rewatch.

5. The Blob (1988) 8/10. Blu Ray. I love this reboot of the Blob! Great pacing and gruesome kills. Must see.

6. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986) 8/10. Blu Ray. A great follow up to a classic. TCM 2 is iconic and gets better with each watch.

Oct 2nd

7. CHUD (1984). 7/10. Blu Ray. Watched the international cut on the Arrow Blu ray. I am a big fan of Daniel Stern. I think he carried this film.

8. Humanoids of the Deep (1980) 8/10. Blu Ray. Roger Corman's version of Creature from the Black Lagoon. Lots of monsters, gore and boobs. Must viewing!

9. Beware the Blob (aka Son of Blob) (1973) 6/10. Blu Ray. Larry Hagman directed Blob sequel. This one has alot of stars in it but doesn't know if it wants to be a comedy or a horror film.

Oct 3rd

10. Without Warning (1980) 8/10. Blu Ray. Jack Palance, Martin Landau and Frisbee throwing Aliens. What more can you ask for? classic 80s cheese.

11. Amer (2009) 3/10. Blu Ray. it's rare that a film moves me to rant, but Amer accomplished it. 90 minutes of pretentious, tedium shot almost exclusively in extreme close ups. This one took years off my lifespan.

12. Spasmo (1974). 7/10. Blu Ray. Umberto Lenzi Giallo murder mystery with a twist ending. Another in a long line of entertaining Giallo films.

13. Peeping Tom (1960) 8/10. BLu Ray. The film that ruined a director's career, now considered a masterpiece. Must viewing.

14. Popcorn (1991) 5/10. Blu Ray. The Synapse Steelbook edition is gorgous, but this is really not a very good slasher film.

Oct 4th

15. Mad Monster Party (1967) 6/10. DVD The old Rankin and Bass puppetry films from the 60s & 70s are really only geared to those of us that were young kids at that time. It was a fun trip down memory lane.

16. Extraordinary Tales (2015) 7/10. netflix. I thoroughly enjoyed this aminated anthology of Poe tales. Highly recommended.

17.The Dorm That Dripped Blood (aka Death Dorm or Pranks) (1982) 6/10. Blu Ray. Two UCLA film students directed this slasher film during the hayday of slashers and its a very good effort. The kills are numerous and well done. recommended.

18. The Stranger (2014) 6/10. Netflix. An interesting variant on the vampire mythos. No fangs in this one and the emphasis is on family bonds.

October 5th

19. An American Werewolf in London (1981) 7/10. Blu Ray. Classic from John Landis. Nice mix of horror and humor. very entertaining.

20. The Beast Must Die (1974) 6/10 DVD. 70s drive in classic. More of a "who dunnit" then a werewolf film, but entertaining.

21. Bad Moon (1996) 7/10. Blu Ray. A very entertaining werewolf movie told thru the eyes of the family dog, Thor. Werewolf effects were a bit cheesy, but still a fun watch.

22. Brotherhood of the Wolf (2001) 7/10. DVD. An interesting take on the wolf mythology and loosely based on true events. At 2.5 hours it was too long tho.

Oct 6th

23.Faceless (1988) 9/10. Dvd. Faceless is Jess Franco's homage to Eyes Without a Face. It is excellent and includes a powerful cast. One of Franco's best films.

24.Candyman (1992) 7/10. Dvd. Clive Barker's classic film that put Tony Todd on the map. Still holds up to repeat viewings.

25. Urban Legend (1998) 6/10. Dvd. Scream copycat released two years after. Mindless entertainment and Tara Reid actually looks good in this one.

26. Urban Legend Final Cut (2000) 5/10. Dvd. More comedy in this sequel, but Eva Mendez is easy on the eyes.

27. Urban Legend Bloody Mary (2000) 4/10. Dvd. Straight to video. this one goes for the supernatural element vs a
"scream" rip off plot.

Oct 7th

28. Cult of Chucky (2017). 6/10. Netflix. Direct to video release that updates the story with a grown up Andy and Nica from the sixth film merging story arcs into a psych facility. A decent, but not great return for Chucky.

29. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1921) 9/10. Blu Ray. A classic of German Expressionist cinema. I have the Eureka Blu Ray and the 4k scan is incredible.

30. The Forest (1982) 4/10. Blu Ray. Z grade Slasher/Cannibal in the woods film. Equally parts entertaining and inept.

31. The Void (2017) 8/10. Netflix. One of my favorite viewings of the challenge. One of the most intense, innovative and interesting films since Hellraiser (very similar to Hellraiser).

32. Savage Weekend (1979) 6/10. Blu Ray. Decent proto slasher made in 1976 but released in 79. Scorpion Blu Ray is excellent.

Oct 8th

33. Night of the Living Dead (1990) 7/10. Blu Ray. A more than respectable reboot by Tom Savini.

34. Train to Busan (2016) 8/10. Blu Ray. A very well done Asian version of "28 days later".

35. Tombs of the Blind Dead (1971) 8/10. Dvd. Spain's answer to Night of the Living Dead is a very moody, atmospheric masterpiece. Highly recommended. similar to Burial Ground.

36. Dawn of the Dead (2004) 7/10. Blu Ray. Zack Synder's reboot of the classic. Ving Rhames makes the movie.

Oct 9th

37. Messiah of Evil (1973) 6/10. Blu Ray. Strange 70s horror film about a mysterious stranger, zombies and cannibalism. A bit static and talky.

38. Return of the Blind Dead (1973) 6/10. Dvd. The skeletons of the knights templars return in the sequel to Tombs of the Blind Dead. Equally atmospheric as the original.

39. Raw (2017) 7/10. Dvd. A vegetarian acquires a taste for humans after eating a rabbit kidney. Reminds me of 2013 Contracted, which i liked better.

Oct 10th

40. Highway to Hell (1992) 4/10 Blu Ray. Interesting concept. A cop from hell capture women and takes them to an alternate reality (hell, supposedly). Played as a comedy (includes Ben Stiller), but I didnt find it funny. pass on it.

41. The Ghost Galleon (1974) 6/10. Dvd. Third in the Blind Dead films. This time the Knights Templar occupy a 18th century ship. Not as good as the first two.

42. Yongary, Monster From the Deep (1967) 7/10. Blu Ray. Korean Kiaju film. Always alot of fun.

43. Night of the Seagulls (1976) 7/10. Blu Ray. One thing about these Blind Dead films is their consistency. If you liked the first one your gonna like all the others. This fourth installment delivers same as first three with a change in location.

Oct 11th

44. XX (2017) 7/10. Netflix. An interesting Anthology by female directors. I thought each story was good. Not sure about rewatch value.

45. Diary of the Dead (2007) 6/10. Blu Ray. Romero dips his toe into the found footage/shot on video world. Low production values and lots of CGI. I don't think this worked.

46. Parents (1989) 7/10. Blu Ray. A repeat watch of this Vestron Blu Ray. I really enjoyed it. Randy Quaid makes the movie.

47. Bubba Ho Tep (2002) 9/10. Dvd. I love Bubba Ho Tep. My favorite bruce campbell performance.

48. One Dark Night (1982) 3/10. Amazon Prime. A snoozer. A boo film without any boos until the last 20 minutes. Takes way too long to set up. Not a good start for Tom McLoughlin.

49. Waxwork (1988) 6/10. Blu Ray. A fun film with David Warner and the sexy Michelle Johnson.

50. Waxwork II (1992) 5/10. Blu Ray. Not sure why there was such a gap between films. This one amps up the comedy.

51. The House that Screamed (1971) 7/10 Blu Ray. Proto Slasher from a Spanish Director. Very much a Psycho copycat.

Oct 15th

52. Friday The 13th Part 2 (1981) 8/10. Blu Ray. "Tator Sack" Jason!. My favorite sequel along with final chapter.

53.The Screaming Skull (1958) 4/10. stream. Watched the MS3TK version. Still a pretty tough sit through.

54. Kwaidan (1964) 10/10. Blu Ray. A beautiful ghost film. Definitely a masterpiece of Japanese cinema.

Oct 16th

55. Chosen Survivors (1974) 6/10. Blu Ray. A post apocalyptic underground bunker also contains vampire bats.

56. Martyrs (2008) 7/10. Dvd. A very divisive film. It's brutal, tough to watch and thought provoking at the same time.

57. Kalifornia (1993)
7/10. Blu Ray. Brad Pitt plays a red-neck serial killer and does it very well. I was surprised how much i liked this one.

58. Don't Answer the Phone (1980) 6/10 Blu Ray. A classic sleazy serial killer film. I remember this one causing alot of public hand wringing. Pretty tame stuff for today's standards. The Vinegar Syndrome Blu Ray is outstanding.

Oct 17th

59. Happy Death Day (2017) 4/10. Theater A light weight slasher film geared towards teenie boppers.

60. Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan (1959) 7/10. TCM Interesting revenge / ghost story from Japan.

61. Tales of Halloween (2015) 6/10 Blu Ray. A new anthology. Like many, it has some hits and misses. Still recommended.

Oct 18th

62. The Mummy (1999) 6/10. Blu Ray. CGI fest with Brendon Frazier. I hated this when it first came out, but I enjoy it now for what it is - an action adventure romp.

63. Seeding the Ghost (1983) 7/10. BLu Ray Shaw Bros Rape/Revenge film that features black magic and a bat shit ending.

64. Pin (1989) 6/10. Dvd. Interesting spin on the evil doll idea, but i think the movie runs a bit too long.

65. The Pit (1981) 7/10 Blu Ray. A strange, quirky story about a sexually obsessed boy who kills people by pushing them into a pit filled with troglodytes.

Oct 19th

66. Under the Shadow (2016) 6/10. Netflix. My second viewing of this Iranian supernatural film. I still think this is a fairly routine supernatural story.

67. Possession (1981) 8/10 Blu Ray Fascinating, strange, confusing possession story. Highly recommended.

68. The Mummy Returns (2001) 5/10 Blu Ray A poor man's Raiders of the Lost Ark. Ironically they spend 98M on this. If I was the producers I would want a refund. Horrible CGI.

Oct 20th

69. Succubus (1969) 8/10 Dvd. Jess Franco goodness. Early film showcases Janine Reynaud as a nightclub actress who seduces and kills her victims.

70. The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008) 7/10. Blu Ray. I think this third film was an improvement over the the second in the trilogy. I like the premise set in China.

71. Shadow of the Vampire (2000) 8/10. Dvd. An under-rated classic. John Malkovich plays FW Murnau as he films his classic Nosferatu.

72. Queen of Blood (2014) 7/10 Blu Ray. Fascinating surreal vampire film in the style of Jean Rollin.

73. Ganja and Hess (1973) 7/10 Youtube. Interesting Blaxploitation vampire film with Duane jones.

77. Riding the Bullet (2004) 6/10 Dvd. Stephen King ghost story adaptation. Not bad.

Oct 22nd

78. Blackenstein (1973) 5/10. Blu Ray. An interesting Blaxploitation film with an even more interesting production history. The film is inept and pretty dull.

79. The Undying Monster (1942) 5/10. Blu Ray An eerie 1940s film in the style of Edgar Wallace about a werewolf haunting a family.

80. +1 (2013) 6/10. Streaming. An interesting take on dopplegangers with a downbeat ending. Enjoyable one time watch.

Oct 23rd

81. Demon Seed (1977) 5/10 Blu Ray. Silly farce about a computer that implants its offspring into Julie Christie. Paycheck movie?
