September 30 [Criterion Challenge Crossover Theme Night - starting after dusk, 7:38pm] (4 hours, 53 minutes watched)
01. Mad Monster Party (1967, 95 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ I love the Rankin Bass animation and the epic assortment of monster characters but while the character homages are part of what 'makes' MMP I think they were also played too conservatively to the point of thin characters - this film is the poster child for the worst time of pastiche. A fun homage but not as epic as Island of Misfit toys, a near hit. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Subset
02. Get Out (2017, 104 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰Pleasantly impressive - a lot of the hype is deserved for socially conscious race relations commentary more so than on the basis of a horror movie. It was certainly original and intense, I enjoyed it but some of the humor seemed odd (I hated the TSA character) - despite inconsistent humor Get Out was an especially witty film. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
03. Cronos (1993, 94 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰It takes chops to pull off a movie about an alchemy bug in such an whimsical and engaging way despite some plot holes. There are some great thematic elements and the score add a lot. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset

October 1 [RIP Tope Hooper Memorial Theme Night] (9 hours, 28 minutes watched)
04. The Mangler (1995, 104 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ In an alternate universe of comically oversized laundry presses where Robert Englund's hammy overacting is the worst part of a movie exists The Mangler, a film consisting of randomly shocked actresses and a plot propelled by a beatnick who just speculates correctly the events/basis of the movie. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX] Theme
05. Invaders from Mars (1986, 100 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ A fun homage that skirts being too derivative with well executed alien practical effects and ironic suburban atmosphere. The military aspect and one twist seems too over the top but also very 80s. Karen Black does well as a school nurse 'against the world.' Format: Blu-ray Theme
06. The Toolbox Murders (2004, 95 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Unintentionally funny 90s time capsule with a grungy handiman, loud practice acoustic alternative rock, with a timecapsule atmosphere that's better than the movie itself. Psychological thriller elements fall flat and pacing is often slow until the end. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX] Theme
07. My Babysitter is a Vampire (2010, 85 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Kids picked this one, it was better than I expected with a modern comedy Buffy the Vampire slayer vibe. As far as kid friend fiend movies go this one was better than I expected = fighting vampires with popcorn. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
08. No Estamos Solos [We Are Not Alone] (2017, 76 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Serviceable hodge podge of atmospheric but overly familiar tropes aping so many other movies. The lack of originality is distracting but still some tropes still feel eerie despite the plot. Format: Streaming [Netflix] 1st Viewing
09. Sleep Tight (2011, 108 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ Tense character driven oddity that stretches disbelief but if you stick with it an effectively intense thriller with an ending that will stay with you. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX] 1st Viewing

October 2 [Toxic Slime Theme Night] (9 hours, 13 minutes watched)
10. C.H.U.D. [Integral Cut] (1984, 96 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Bait and switch if you're going in expecting a slimey gorey creature feature. Takes a while to get going and is much more subtle than the marketing hints at but the plot, which is more about the community surrounding CHUDS, is more complicated than I could appreciate in my first few viewings, even if it is slow on the creature rampage. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
11. Fairlane Road (2016, 92 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ An awkwardly acted indie movie with some cryptic imagery and a plot with a dizzying lot going on for a far out deserted setting. There are creepy moments and the ending is tense so the apparently limited budget was used to some winning effect but so much of the film is slow and the actors too weak to carry the character driven dramatic aspects (two guys in the dessert). I want to rate this higher because it seems like there's a lot of heart here, but didn't. Format: Streaming [Netflix].
12. The Void (2016, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Effectively paced surreal first half despite some overly familiar tropes but the second part jumps the shark and gets too vague forsaking mystery for dim light imagery. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
13. Antibirth (2016, 82 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ As much a stoner 'comedy' as a horror film Antibirth is refreshingly nihilistic and modern. It maybe rewards those with patience to sit through the stoner antics and super obnoxious characters (Meg Tilly must die). The plot is surreal and unusual. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
14. Frankenweenie (2009, 94 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Fun movie for family viewing and a gateway to classic horror even if some of the gags escape the kids. Does well at infusing syrupy sentimentality with the dog. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
15. Be Afraid (2017, 99 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Interesting creatures that blur the line between fantasy and reality but some stale acting and lame production standards give this a generic 'television' feel. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing

October 3 [Slasher/Giallo/Killer Theme Night] (11 hours, 2 minutes watched)
16. Intruder (2016, 95 minutes) ★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Prepare for the most random movie every - there's little plot, it's literally just a woman walking through her house were an unidentified person walks behind her, stands still in front of her, or takes a bit of fruit an places it back in the bowl. You're heard of 'pure cinema,' the art of visual imagery with no words or narration - prepare to sit through 95 minutes of a dull woman doing household activities unaware that standing awkwardly in her hallway for a long period of time is a stranger who just might pull some mostly non-violet tom foolery.Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
17. Most Likely to Die (2015, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ A refresh throwback slasher with a bizzare masked killer and an interesting 'most likely to' gimmick, there are times the gimmick doesn't quite land (it's set up but then carried out so subtly I'd have to backtrack to check). Decent tension and kills balancing shallow drama with slasher conventions. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
18. Sweet Home (2015, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★★★★✰ Randomly watched this not expecting much and it blew me away, well staged and atmospheric with an intense scenario and some gore. The premise is simple enough but the execution and performances are top notch. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
19. It (2017, 135 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A retro themed update with different plot structure and a more in your face clown. It feels like the kids are up against more here with both natural and supernatural adversaries turned up a notch perhaps to a fault with bullies sometimes seeming unbelievable nasty. Format: Theatrical. 1st Viewing Theme
20. Friday the 13th Part 2 [R Rated Cut] (1981, 87 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Not my favorite Friday the 13th but makes some genius additions to the mythos building it past the first movie with some gruesome reminders. The middle is slow and there are some odd plot elements. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Subset Theme
21. Preservation (2014, 90 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Tense thriller with some interesting themes about nature vs technology convenience and youth vs age but those themes and the plot are largely lifted from other; Preservation is a decent film just not an original one. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
22. Luna De Miel [aka Honeymoon] (2015, 96 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Novel premise for a torture porn flick with heart. The psychopath is a little flat and dispassionate for the role which gives some of the gruesome proceedings a strangely casual feel. Typical for torture porn it goes to extremes but some cheap production values hold it down. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
23. Hellbenders (2012, 85 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Felt like something more lighthearted after super murder theme day - Hellbenders is a colorful film about hellbound sinful priests who can die and drag resistant demons to hell with them if all else fails, it's humor comes mostly from contradictions of priests using profanity in reference to spiritual protection creating a sort of religious humor that might suite a specific niche audience. If priests cussing is hilarious then this movie is for you. The lowbrow jokes get old quick and the movie's not especially tense/scary - the demons are mostly so cartoonish there's not much threat and it's all just so meh. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 4 [Animated Theme Night] (7 hours, 23 minutes watched)
24. Extraordinary Tales (2013, 73 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Computer generated animation is cel shaded pleasantly to look of a better quality than it is but at times the filters/digital is distracting. Fun celebrity narration (I suspect sources from other places because the wraparound segment voices are subpar) is nice and some of the visuals are creative (my favorite is Red Death). The stories in this anthology are artfully constructed with stylish touches but sometimes oversimplified to a fault where it seems some of Poe's story is lost; there are 5 segments plus a wraparound. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
25. Ludo (2015, 87 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Named after an apparently popular board game (like Sorry); Ludo is more interesting to me as an international film showcasing a different culture (in part here the females are sexual aggressors, not sure if that's just horror fantasy 'slut' trope?). Some kids break into a mall where crudely made up white faced people show up, apparently these are ghosts, to challenge the kids to a gorey version of Ludo. Fortunately the blood effects are better than the ghost ones and there's a bit of gore. The mall setting is underutilized; it could just as well have been a school, grocery store, or dance hall (no obvious Dawn of the Dead style commentary here - just superficial popcorn horror); really gets weird when it changes direction to tell some metaphysical tale of evil Lugo's origin. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
26. Patchwork (2015, 86 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Very intentionally strange and fun spirited film that never really makes sense and while it can be devil may care braindead fun there are countless other body horror / Frankenstein riffs that are better executed. It's stupid but never quite crazy enough to be memorable (see the similar but superior Sexy Killer instead or even re-watch Re-animator). There is a clever internal monologue gag and the actresses are not bad. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
27. Scooby Doo! Camp Scare (2010, 77 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Cool campout theme with three different monsters and a few additional gang members. The villains is less obvious. I might have rated it higher but I find I need to be in the right mood for Scooby Doo these days since the movies are so formulaic. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
28. The Empire of Corpses (2015, 120 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ A strange anime-ish hybrid of Frankenstein lore with apocalyptic zombie slaves and musings on the nature of the soul that includes Sherlock Holmes and Ulysses Grant. Not really geared towards horror because it gets more technical about mythos and goes so overboard into fantasy sci-fi, a bizzare spin on Frankenstein. The action and scope of the film give it an epic grand feel, it really works. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme

October 5 [Werewolf Theme Night] (9 hours, 20 minutes watched)
29. Bad Moon (1996, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ I was glad to see Bad Moon selected as a subset film, I've heard excellent things about it. It's a good by the book werewolf movie that does a lot with a small cast. Some of the production values seem a little too sleek and some of the effects work haven't aged well but are cheesy enough to be fun. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
30. Uncaged (2016, 95 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ A buddy comedy where one is a werewolf and they get embroiled with a strange crime lord named Gonzo who is maybe more over the top than the werewolf. Covers werewolf legacy well with some cool family backstory but some of the character actors are awkward. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
31. The Disappointments Room (2016, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Enjoyable as a psychological minded drama rather than a horror film failing to generate scares but really nailing a theme of grief, I've heard negative things about Disappointments Room and can see how expecting scare factorwould be a letdown but I ended up enjoying it more than I expected. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
32. Demonic (2015, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Told mostly in reverse based around a supernatural crime scene involving some standard ghost imagery and some cringe worthy decisions from detectives. With so much going on in the past and present the pacing is good and at least one twist is interesting. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
32b. Ghost Patrol (2016, 47 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Roughly animated kids movie about a haunted house ghost prank turned true with kid friendly demons, it's under developed but held my kids' attention. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
33. The Wolf Man (1941, 70 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A classic but I think I've seen it enough times that it doens't keep it's edge with me. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
34. Dark Signal (2016, 98 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A compelling mix of eccentric radio talk show segments, supernatural frights, and serial killings that hit the right notes for me. For me it was just eccentric and varied enough to work for my mood despite being a bit slow. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing

October 6 [Urban Legend / Folklore Theme Night] (9 hours, 44 minutes watched)
35. Candyman (1992, 99 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Epic scope with a great sense of supernatural menace with a great psychedelic horror cat/mouse escapade. The racial themes are interesting but sometimes seem to bleed into stereotypes and the Candyman mythos is awkwardly overemphasized (this is a pet peeve of mine, over explaining). Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
36. Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005, 97 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Generic themes with some elements that are predictable and generally forgettable. Bloody Mary is unmemorable and they seem to force the myth into a murder mystery supernatural thriller, which isn't really what Bloody Mary is (kind of like they just slapped the Bloody Mary idea onto a previous script which was itself an earlier version of some other movie we've all already seen). Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
37. Beyond the Gates (2016, 84 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ I really like some of the style in the movie and losing control of reality to be forced into a game idea is a promising idea, it's just that too little really happens - there are a few 'wtf' strange scenarios but it's a little slow paced and there isn't a big sense of threat. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
38. The Windmill (2016, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Great pseudo-slasher film that's not very original but pulls off what it does in an atmospheric and interesting way. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
39. Sennentuntschi (2010, 110 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Folksy and brutal with an unusual premise. Going back and forth in time with similar characters is sometimes confusing.Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
40. Hounds of Love (2016, 108 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Nice cinematography and style with a slow burn tension that's more atmospheric than substance.Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 7 [Hallucinatory / Nightmare Theme Night] (10 hours, 13 minutes watched)
41. Curandero (2005, 90 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Far out imagery that plunges into mysticism without much sense of subtley, immediately the son of a with doctor is enlisted by a surprisingly open police office to hunt down a satanic drug dealer and spiritual hallucinations kick up to 11 plaguing the rest of the film with a parade of imagery and a plot that moves along on the basis of whatever hallucinations show up. The visuals are often wild but so over the top and handled so casually it detracts. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
42. Visions (2015, 102 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ I'm a sucker for strange imagery and this worked well balancing tension and visual oddity but without breaking much new ground. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
[Irish Party Aid Double Feature - Grabbers & Shrooms]
43. Grabbers (2012, 94 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Meh. Cool grabber creature but the rest of the movie didn't really 'grab' me, for a film about an alcohol fueled fight for survival it's surprisingly subdued and small scale with characters who seem bland, like an underdeveloped low budget Shaun of the Dead spin. Format: Streaming [Hulu]. 1st Viewing Theme
44. Shrooms (2007, 86 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Occasionally cool visuals but the mushroom druggie theme seems pointless (the participants could has just as well walked into a haunted forest). Having participants engage in hallucinations seems to blunt the idea of a menace because it makes it easy to assume that everything is just a drug fueled fantasy.Format: Streaming [Vudu SD]. 1st Viewing Theme
45. Necrophobia (2013, 75 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Much more enjoyable than I expected about a twin who has strange visions after his brother dies with cool psychological elements. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
46. Caltiki the Immortal (1959, 76 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Neat scientific spin on monster mythis and I love the idea of Aztec mythology (but the background seems glossed over). Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
47. The Hills Have Eyes (1977, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★★★★✰ Probably Wes Craven's most intelligent script. Format: Blu-ray.

October 8 [Zombie Theme Night] (10 hours, 8 minutes watched)
[Re-Animator Marathon]
48. Re-Animator [Integral Cut] (1985, 105 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ A classic with one of the most nutsy endings every. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
49. Bride of Re-Animator [Unrated Cut] (1990, 98 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Great sequel with a clever concept but Dr Hill is an obnoxious character and while the body horror elements are fun the hypnotism bit is lame. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
50. Beyond Re-Animator (2003, 96 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ A lame rip off of the originals shot on obvious low budget with a script that stretches things by focusing too much on shallow characters and over explains the 'science.' A very awkward structure. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
51. The Rezort (2015, 93 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Jurassic Park with zombies and a Dead Island (island zombie video game) feel going for action horror in a way that's ultimately mediocre with just one cool plot twist. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
52. Here Alone (2016, 98 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Meditative post apocalyptic drama using zombies as a catalyst for tragedy, I enjoyed it but it is slow paced and not outright horror. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
53. Train to Busan (2016, 118 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ Fast paced zombie mayhem with some emotional gut punches. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset

October 9 [Female Director Theme Night] (8 hours, 50 minutes watched)
54. Raw (2016, 99 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Eerie slow burn buildup with lots of intense character driven moments, it's got a lot of partying for a horror movie and quite gruesome. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
55. XX (2017, 80 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Mostly subtle and strange premises that don't quite end up landing. Mystery is one thing but these stories seem to subtle to really sell frights, it seemed like a collection of mediocre outlandish tales told in a matter of face way without as much style and intentionally withholding some of the more in your face elements to a fault. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
56. Amer (2009, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Strange mostly nonverbal segments of stopwatches, ants, and other impenetrable symbolism fill my screen in a tale that I think is about sexuality and the intensity of human interactions. I ended up enjoying it more than I expected to but nothing could have prepared me for how subtle and mysterious much of it is.Format: Streaming [Thanks to Alyxstarr!]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
57. Siren (2016, 82 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Not as sleazy or low brow as the premise of a seductress from a supernatural brothel would seem with supernatural oddities that are bizzare enough to keep things moving despite some questionable computer imagery. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
58. #Horror (2015, 101 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ I can't decide if the movie is just too experimental and saavy that it's using horror as a metaphor but it's definitely over long. I feel like whatever commentary it's attempting about social media is mostly superficial. This movie has the most convincing preteen setup but maybe to a fault focusing so much on sleepover antics. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
59. Scooby Doo! Stage Fright (2013, 78 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ One of the better recent Scooby Doo movies with endless twists and a musical theme. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 10 [1967/1992 AnniversaryTheme Night] (9 hours, 8 minutes watched)
60. House IV (1992, 94 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ A good blend of light hearted horror and silly comedy that hit the right notes for me despite not really seeming like a great movie generally speaking (slow at times, dated); I really enjoyed House IV but I'm not sure I can explain why. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
61. Evolution (2015, 81 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ A masterpiece in cryptic atmospheric film making. Beautiful underwater photography sets the stage for the most unusual unsettling mysterious events. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
62. The Forgotten (2014, 89 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Ends up much better than I expected with a gritty emphasis on poverty (which sometimes comes across as forced) and an interesting final act; the initial setup is off putting with oddly empty set designs and a laborious setup. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
63. Highway to Hell (1992, 94 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A cartoonish action comedy spin on the Orpheus myth with fun car races and a gnarly hell cop. It had a lot of great sight gags like the handcuffs, sex demon, claymation Cerberus dog, etc. The light hearted fast pace of Highway to Hell was refreshing. Format: Streaming [Thanks to Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing
64. Yongary: Monster from the Deep[Mystery Science Theater 3K] (1967, 87 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ The creature itself was nicely dated b-movie fluff with amusing low quality effects but wow was it a chore to get there. I'm grateful for the MST3K edition, that made it somewhat better.. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
65. Boo! A Madea Halloween[Mystery Science Theater 3K] (2016, 103 minutes) ★½✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ My wife wanted to watch the Madea halloween movie, and I enjoy Halloween oriented shows - I just don't 'get' the Madea movies. I enjoyed the dramatic weight in Diary of a Mad Black Woman but that seems to be missing here and it's either Madea hamming it up or a lackluster kids scaring old people plot. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 11 [Skull/Skeleton Art/Monster Theme Night] (5 hours, 33 minutes watched)
66. Crush the Skull (2015, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ At first glance it looks like a cheap knockoff but it's actually a smartly made thriller with a refreshingly straight sense of humor (not overly silly). Tension is good with an intelligent script and there are a few interesting twists. An impressively clever film with an intelligent script despite some indie movie flaws. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
67. Holidays (2016, 105 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Curious assortment of holiday themed segments, mostly mediocre with a few taking risks - my favorites were Easter and New Year's. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
68. The Screaming Skull (1958, 68 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Slow going with a few nightmarish segments, the dated special effects were fun but much of it is a bore.Format: Streaming [Thanks Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
69. The Devil's Candy (2015, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ A slow burn with some nightmarish segments that boils over into an intense finale. Especially artfully constructed that rewards patience. Format: Streaming [Thanks Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing

October 12 [Mummy Theme Night] (8 hours, 58 minutes watched)
70. Bubba Ho-Tep (2002, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Seems relentlessly weird just for the sake of seeming 'cult,' but despite the oddball fake Elvis and black JFK the theme of a supernatural force feasting on nursing home residences is a smart idea. Some of the narration is especially clever and even the sillier concepts end up working ok. I wish the film wouldn't have spent so much of the first third focusing on fake Elvis and his backstory, those are fun but I came for the hillbilly mummy. Thematically the over exaggerated cartoonish characters work as examples of vitality in a field of death, but the films oversells it a little. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
71. Demon Inside (2013, 93 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Gorey imagery and a confused point of view help this along to a clever twist. The lead having an unreliable prospective and often prone to strange hallucinations carries the film. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
72. The Mummy (2017, 101 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Slick production design and special effects help this one along, it's not a great mummy movie with the mummy seeming like more of a plot device than main antagonist but it's serviceable action fantasy that is maybe too much setup and too little standalone mummy chaos. The mummy is oddly sexualized. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
73. Indigenous (2014, 86 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Typical jump scare teenagers partying fluff but with a unique ending and cool jungle environment. Some of the villain effects are distracting because they're not especially well done even if they're practical (not computer generated), bucks the formula for creature films with the smart ending. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
74. Timewalker (1982, 83 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ The time walker mummy is a really interesting variant on mummies with a mythos that is especially interesting shoehorned into slasher and plague movie conventions. Hokey sci fi props round things out well. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
75. Inside [Unrated] (2007, 83 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ An intense villain steals the show in a nicely paced film. Some of the still often cringe worthy gore hasn't aged well (especially not the CGI baby) and the parade of victims is over the top but a lot of fun. Splatter everywhere. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 13 [Friday 13th / Black Cats / Bad Luck Theme Night] (8 hours, 18 minutes watched)
76. Jason X (2001, 93 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ A really bizzare film that's just campy and low budget enough to be fun in a fan fiction sort of way but no way can you take it seriously. I think it'd have been better for then to make a standard Jason movie but if they needed to 'jump the shark' by going in space it could have been much worse. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
77. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988, 112 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ This is one of my favorite F13th movies with the telekinetic girl and the birthday party teens, it's got some great kills and gruesome special effects - I watched it for checklist but especially enjoyed it. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
78. The Babysitter (2017, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Entertaining blend of comedy and gore with fast pacing that pulls off a change in tone from romantic comedy to a horror cat and mouse game well. A great reflection of magical realism establishing a suburban landscape then twisting it into a gorey backdrop of comedy horror. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
79. Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986, 106 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ One of my favorite Friday the 13th movies, it's got a great opening and some good kills. I like zombie Jason vs 'crazy' Tommy. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
80. Hotel Transylvania (2012, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Hotel Transylvania is one of the better kid friendly seasonal movies to come out lately, I feel like I've seen it too much that I didn't enjoy it as much as I had before but it's standout family entertainment. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
81. Road Games (2015, 95 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Well executed mystery thriller with a great twist that's executed so well even if you can guess it in advance it's still entertaining. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 14 [Splatter Gore Theme Night] (6 hours, 50 minutes watched)
82. Martyrs (2008, 103 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ A bizzare mix of brilliantly paced intense wtf first half that takes a nose dive in the second half with a twist so lame it dulls the movie. People have told me this movie parallels Gnosticism doctrine in a convincing way that makes me see there's more depth here but it's still not for me. An odd mix of religious allegory and splatter that makes one wonder what target audience they're gunning for. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme Subset
83. Cabin Fever (2002, 94 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Excellent theme of a strange gorey virus, some of the characters are too obnoxious and some of the 'humor' is more cringe worthy than funny. Cabin Fever might be my least favorite Eli Roth film. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
84. Audrey Rose (1977, 103 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Overly long for the content falling into a diluted legal battle to 'prove' reincarnation despite some pitfalls with the plotting it's executed stylishly with such stage presence it's still entertaining and the plot is original if not over long. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
85. The Sixth Sense (1999, 110 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ It took me a while to appreciate Sixth Sense at all, the 'twist' seems so immediately predictable and if you're patient there's some interesting themes are redemption from the afterlife that seem underdeveloped and the syrupy attempts at drama are so unconvincing. Format: Streaming [Netflix].

October 15 [Anthology Theme Night] (9 hours, 20 minutes watched)
86. Tales of Halloween (2015, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Excellent anthology film with a spot on ghoulish vibe. I like more plentiful shorter segments in anthology films like this. Some of the crossover between segments was nice. There were a few lackluster segments but many were especially good and it's frantic enough to keep things well paced. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. Theme Subset
87. ABCs of Death 2.5 (1995, 98 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Often lackluster segments many of which are so intentionally weird it comes off as more amateurish than zany. The thought of 26 out takes seemed like an interesting idea, but I can see why many of these weren't used. I liked the ABCs of Death films, maybe more than most, but these are not standouts. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
88. Tales from the Hood (1995, 98 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Better than I expected twist of familiar tales with political context (this seem like Twilight Zone episodes). The end twist is iconic. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
89. Torture Garden (1967, 93 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Slow going anthology but well acted with some clever twists. It's a very British feeling film, subdued with lots of setup. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
90. Hocus Pocus (1993, 96 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ I don't think I've ever seen Hocus Pocus before but I really enjoyed it despite Bette Middler's overacting. It was cartoonish and atmospheric with just enough silly humor and a fun kid friendly witch chase. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
91. Trick R Treat (2007, 83 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Slow going anthology but well acted with some clever twists. I think it's over rated with the seasonal emphasis being low hanging fruit for a film with some great imagery, moments, and interconnected tales but much of the run time is hit and miss. I liked Tales of Halloween better. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme

October 16 [Fangoria / Video Watchdog Memorial Theme Night] (5 hours, 6 minutes watched)
92. Curse of Chucky[Unrated] (2013, 97 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Nice use of a small cast and scenes bathed in darkness. A few of the kills seem too staged but overall an impressive effort and return to form of straight horror for the doll. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
93. Ganja & Hess (1973, 110 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ I really like the strange upbeat vibe with the tribal/religious music and nearly every scene bathed in sun. The modern atypical vampire approach is really cool. Sometimes the music seemed repetitive (especially the 'oh hosana' one). While it was stylish I'm not sure I understand a lot of the religious symbolism embedded in the movie (maybe a longing for redemption) but there seem to be some deeper themes. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
94. Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 (2000, 99 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ I enjoyed BoS when it first came out but it hasn't aged well, the twist is still interesting but so much of the content is too subtle to the point of seeming like characters are just shuffling around the setting acting scared or unsure rather than any sense of plot development. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme

October 17 [Friends - Good, Bad, or Imaginary Theme Night] (7 hours, 54 minutes watched)
95. Pin (1988, 103 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ The Leon character does creepy well. It's an interesting scenario with the sister seeming to be like a hostage in her own home to her brother and an anatomical dummy playing such a far out scenario straight with gusto. Format: Streaming [thanks to Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
96. Alucarda (1978, 78 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Alcudarda is such a bizzare combination of hammy overacting, religious satire, provocative imagery, sleaze, and low production values. I can't tell if the poor acting (especially the priest) is so awesomely satirical or just a happy accident. It is a lurid and the finale is nicely chaotic really delivering. Tina Romero has got one heck of a bug eyed gaze. Format: Streaming [thanks to Alyxstarr]. Theme Subset
97. Dolls (1987, 78 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ I especially like Dolls, this is at least the third time I've seen it and it holds up. The pacing on Dolls is expert with so little being revealed for much of the run time using atmosphere hinting at more going on than you see on screen. The musical score is especially effective and the old couple are well acted. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme Subset
98. The Revenant (2009, 118 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A soldier who strangely wakes up after being dead a month hungry for blood and uses his undead status to become a vigilante gunslinger with his best friend as the thrill of things and the consequences of undeath spiral out of control - I think it's a worthy and too often overlooked vampire-ish film with a modern spin on horror conventions with a memorable ending. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
99. The Initiation (1984, 97 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Parts of it seem overly familiar but the mall scene is great and while it's slow at times with a mostly disposable mystery of explaining nightmares there are some gruesome first person perspective kills and camera gimmicks that work. I've heard a lot of recommendations for this and it was a good slasher but I don't think it lived up to the hype in my head. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset

October 17 [Pregnancy Theme Night] (7 hours, 28 minutes watched)
100. Seeding of a Ghost [Zhong Gui] (1983, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ It's clear these Shaw Brothers films were made to entertain and what I've seen has delivered with some great low budget visual and an end that is top notch. I love the dark cartoonishness here and the nonchalant approach to supernatural rape revenge. Format: Streaming [thanks to Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
101. Shelley (2016, 92 minutes) ★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Subtle psychological build up - I did not enjoy Shelley (2016), it's so slow moving and too subtle for my taste, but directed artfully enough that I feel guilty not liking it. The camera aspect ratio felt a little zoomed in and that seemed disoriented. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
102. Residue (2017, 82 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Lured in by obvious Lovecraft ripoffs and a lurid looking cover image I found an aimless fantasy horror with a lot of strange people loitering around watching someone read a book that included occasional hallucinatory imagery. The Max Headroom and Smoking Man (X-files) actors give it some gravitas but it's ultimately passable unless you're hard up for cryptic character driven fantasy fluff. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
103. The Unborn (2009, 89 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Not bad for a PG13 commercialized horror film with some unrelenting imagery and a silly amount of twists and mythos invention. It gets carried away in plot explaining imagery and has some gutsy moments. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. Theme
104. The Transfiguration (2016, 97minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ The pacing is a little slow because it's a mood piece for most of the run time but despite that I especially enjoyed it. It's sort of like Moonlight for closeted deranged vampire film lovers, just the right amount of macabre twist in a gritty urban tale. Format: Streaming [Netflix].

October 19 [Supernatural Theme Night] (7 hours, 35 minutes watched)
105. Under the Shadow (2016, 84 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ Usually political/social allegories are hard to pull off because equating something fantastic to something political can seem forced but it works well here. I wonder if there's any cultural themes I might have missed not being as familiar with Iran and Iraq much less in the 1980s. At first I thought this would be more about the bomb but a good slow burn horror with better than average depth and an interesting setting. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
106. Ghostwatch (1992, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ I've heard good things & it delivers. There's a good attention to detail with small touches that no one ever references just left for viewers to see and wonder. Nicely paced television special feel with charismatic anchors and enough moving pieces to keep things entertaining offering tidbits of the story in a convincing way. They can just throw whatever at the audience through telephone call ins, research data, or house footage. Format: Streaming [thanks to Alyxstarr]. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
107. The Presence (2010, 87 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ The main attraction is a small castle environment that provides a backdrop for cameras filling with static, leering night vision shots of with jarring musical cues over nothing, and a bump of strange knocking on the wall... it's a cheap Blair Witch knockoff that fails to sustain (Blair Witch is a personal favorite, I usually go for this stuff but Presence is a letdown). Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
*****Personal note that I stopped some stats tracking here, need to resume later after 107 for individual items or at 10/19 for day totals*****
108. The Darkness (2016, 93 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ For a film with 3% approval on Rotten Tomatoes it's about what I expected; the ghosts are a really cool idea just under utilized and this comes across like a poor man's Poltergeist. The film has a 'special needs' kid which I found to be an offensive plot device unconvincingly acted. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
109. The Hatred (2017, 100 minutes) ★★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰ Backstory heavy with an awkward catalyst and large periods where nothing especially happens then crams much of the "scares" into the final third (the trailer ruins most of them anyway). Some of the imagery doesn't make sense (like the gas mask) but there are a few effective moments among those not marred by bad computer imagery. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme

October 20 [Vampire Theme Night] (10 hours, 0 minutes watched)
110. Summer of Blood (2014, 86 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Awkward dry observational humor, I appreciate the adult social themes but it's not especially funny and some characters are inconsistent - sort of if Woody Allen made a slacker vampire movie. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
111. Midnight Son (2011, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ Moody modern vampire film about a security guard who develops a sun allergy and taste for blood, he tried to balance his normal but isolated existence with the vampire needs. Well acted with crime thriller elements and dramatic chops. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
112. Stake Land (2010, 96 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Scenic and action packed with a country western edge and sober plot that has a man against the world feel. Moody set designs steal the show. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. Theme
113. Scooby Doo! and the Witch's Ghost (1999, 77 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Some of the better twists with Scooby Doo, The Hex Girls provide some upbeat music and the witch ghost is fun. The unmasking is just the beginning. Format: Streaming [Vudu SD].
114. The Visit (2015, 94 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Nonsensical setup with a twist that makes equally little sense and characters that are obnoxious, I'm surprised people keep giving Shyamalya money to make movies. There are some occasionally creepy moments but it takes some patience. This feels like a clever short film painfully padded to feature length. If you think old people are funny, rapping kids are cute, or find frights in adult diapers this is the film for you. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
115. Blood of Irina (2012, 70 minutes) ★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Musically driven with no words but leering shots of landscapes and women staring off to represent vampirism, written and directed by a composer who favors audio cues with only very rare narration from a strange robotic voice. I appreciate how experimental this is but it's not very good and is painfully dull. I was going to watch it's sequel also but cannot bring myself too do so right now. There are some queasy shots of blood that worked. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
116. Lips of Blood (1975, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ Strange dream like imagery with a plot that doesn't quit make sense until everything comes together; it was initially frustrated but once it gels really a good film that is such a perfect blend of odd low production and artistry. Format: Blu-ray. Theme

October 21 ['Media Home Entertainment' Video Company Theme Night] (12 hours, 23 minutes watched)
117. Day of the Dead (1985, 103 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ A smart continuation of the series asking some interesting questions about the new zombie post apocalypse in a claustrophobic mine environment. Characters mostly seem one dimensional to a fault but some of the special effects especially shine. Format: Blu-ray. Theme Subset
118. Sharknado (2013, 86 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Ok popcorn fluff that's more fantasy action than horror, it was better than I expected for a shameless mix of no budget effects and action but not far out enough or good/bad enough to be especially memorable. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
119. Girl House (2014, 101 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Slow going at first and overall not as sleazy as you'd expect, it's a respectable modern slasher than delivers and has a creepy menacing villain smartly using cameras and modern voyeurism with some nods at gender politics providing interesting social commentary. One of the more memorably/intense introductions. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
120. I Drink Your Blood [Director's Cut] (1970, 89 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Nicely graphic but some of the characters are so cheesy and cartoonish in a way that was jarringly inconsistent with the tone of the violence. Unfavorably dated. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
121. House on Willow Street (2016, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Smart possession movie with an interesting backstory and a demon that has more depth than just frights; balances parody (flashbacks to priests that seem semi-serious or overly theatrical) well with tension. Some of the design is rough (most backgrounds are nondescript) and a twist is too convenient but I had fun. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
122. Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986, 101 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ The balance of upbeat and gorey works amazingly well most of the time and it's artistically directed. The movie is fun and sort of lighthearted (despite the killings and all) then bam it gets gorey and tense. Sometimes the 'humor' doesn't quite work and detracts some from the film (Mosley's over acting is to a fault).Format: Blu-ray [Original 'Gruesome Edition' MGM release] Subset
123. It Runs in the Family [Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 Making Of] (2006, 87 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ General background, some of it self congratulatory - not as in depth as I'd hoped but some interesting tales about set design and development in Austin adapting an older newspaper printing plant into the underground catacombs. Format: Blu-ray [Original 'Gruesome Edition' MGM release] 1st Viewing Subset
124. The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016, 86 minutes) ★★★★★★★★★✰ Cryptic and eerie with nicely built up frights and an very unusual premise. This film scared me and has refreshingly original plot. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX] 1st Viewing

October 22 [Twins / Doppelgangers Theme Night] (12 hours, 52 minutes watched)
125. I Am Not A Serial Killer (2016, 104 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Slow going character piece with an oddball macabre teen keyed into unusual murders; the premising is interesting and it's artful but the pacing is slower than my taste and that lead seems so intentionally odd it's distracting. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
126. Plus One (2013, 96 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Leaves such unexplainable questions that it's more style over substances, rhetorical over having any actual message but it's abstract enough that I think you can interpret it how you like with some clever creepy twists and a fun party atmosphere. Format: Streaming [Shudder - free trial]. Theme Subset
127. Nina Forever (2015, 99 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ Unexpectedly good with bizzard visuals/twists serving up a dark romantic 'comedy' with dramatic chops. It's gory and funny but intense and played a lot more straight than the premise would suggest tackling bittersweet themes of grief and coming to terms. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
128. Dead Ringers (1988, 117 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Complicated character drama slow burn that's dry in placed and not as great as I had expected but I think it's the type of film that might get better on multiple viewings since parts of it seem so subtle/slow. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
129. Murder Weapon (1989, 82 minutes) ★★½✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Awkward low budget slasher with an over exaggerated backstory and poor acting, might be 'so bad it's good' as b-movie cheese but I wasn't in the mood for it. If you want to see extended scenes Linnea Quigley tactlessly telling dirty stories to a psychiatrist for her way out of a psychiatric hospital then this is the move for you (I know that doesn't sound bad, but it is). Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
130. Teen Lust (2014, 82 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Satanic sex comedy that's cute and fast paced but not outright funny, a lighthearted diversion that flaunts morality in action packed oddball mania. It seems really familiar, can't tell if I've seen it before or just other modern satanic cult stuff - maybe like Todd and the Book of Pure Evil in spirit. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
131. Long Weekend (1978, 97 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Eerie environmental tales, sort of a ghost story with nature - some of the plot explaining distress between the couple seems stretched but otherwise creepy and subtle film. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
132. Chasity Bites (2013, 95 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Vivid teen comedy film, like Clueless, centered about Countess Bathory (who was always interesting to me). Often more silly than funny with an interesting plot updating the Bathory mythos for modern times but often too campy for it's own good - kicks into more action during second half but never shows more than a glimmer of promise or originality. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 23 [Storm Weather Theme Night] (9 hours, 36 minutes watched)
133. One Dark Night (1982, 98 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Slow going with an unusual premise and a great mausoleum setting, some queasy effects when things start happening but it takes so very long getting there. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
134. Knock Knock (2015, 99 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ One of the better 'torture porn' style shock films due to being more subdued with gleefully devious characters and tense plot adding sexual and moral elements to the distress, the plot isn't as convincing but it's dark fun and pays off. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
135. House (1986, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Cartoonish haunted house movie with strange imagery that's anything but subtle giving a sort of malicious Muppets feel that is a lot of fun, there's not much plot other than whatever the house throws at Roger so no telling quite what to expect but also sort of non-sequitur. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
136. Viral (2016, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Pandemic feel with some cool blood coughing and two girls lost in the middle of it all. There are some neat effects occasionally hurt by digital imagery and the plot is subdued (focusing on just two girls in one house) for such a widespread chaos but it mostly works. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
137. Needle (2010, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Gruesome voodoo mystery with some cool murders and an unusual device that's a cut above a lot of modern 'college kid' horror films in part due to the graphic deaths and favorably oddball mysticism. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

138. Ghoul (2012, 82 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Made for tv movie with lukewarm acting and limited production values that hits some of the same country 'band of kids' notes as Stand By Me but in a less convencing way spoiled with hints of child abuse and steeped local lore surrounding a creature in the cemetery. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 24 [Hispanic Theme Night] (10 hours, 48 minutes watched)
139. The Loreley's Grasp [Las Garras De Lorelei] (1974, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Interesting creature feature with romance, gore, and eccentric hunters across the Spanish countryside - just the right amount of camp and creature. It's never a big secret who or what the Loreley is resulting in a strange enchantment surrounding the thing with most conflict being in dramatic interactions. Some atmospheric settings. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
140. Juan of the Dead (2011, 100 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Relentlessly silly political allegory with zombies often stage dressing for one joke after another and a few cool action posing scenes. There are a few moments that are painfully unoriginal (like exactly copying the 'I kick ass for the lord' line from Dead Alive). I think I would enjoy the film more if I knew Cuba's history better - it seems like the film is equating zombies to communism at times with our heros being capitalist and scenes of conflict under Che portraits hint that there's more depth. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
141. Night of the Werewolf [El Retorno Del Hombre Lobo] (1981, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Atmospheric slickly produced horror camp with an elaborate backstory involving blood countesses, a werewolf, and vampires. It's humorous how Naschy often writes himself in as a charismatic hero, a sort of grandiose wish fulfillment even if he does have a commanding stage presence. There's a lot of moving pieces here but the finale is especially cool and the werewolf effects are dated but fun. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
142. Happy Death Day (2017, 97 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Cute film with some energy that is a refreshing who-dun-it and what it's lacking in scares it makes up for in heart with a tense need to find out the killer. Format: Theatrical. 1st Viewing
143. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween (2017, 101 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Marginally better than the first with more focus on actual spooks but it can't get past the Madea cornball comedy that drags down the film so much, it's amazing that people bring there young kids to these movies. I think there's a lot of potential for ethnic horror comedy movies but these seem to be far too basic to really work with, for example a large portion of the movie consisting of Madea's squad sitting in a living room then sitting in a car rehashing one note jokes. Format: Theatrical. 1st Viewing

145. Death Note (2017, 101 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ William Dafoe is excellent as a spikey dark jester god of death and the movie is far out enough that it's hard to tell what will happen. I dislike the 'super detective' trope some Japanese material uses because that's even more far out than the death book itself. I wonder how the original source manga compares to the film. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing

146. Convergence (2015, 100 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Dark hospital movie with a twist that's predictable but I'm a sucker for these sort of metaphysically staged navigating the afterlife, or is it the afterlife, world films. Format: Streaming [Neflix]. 1st Viewing
147. Hobgoblins (1988, 92 minutes) ★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ There's a lot of potential for a 'dark muppets' horror movies but this isn't it, not much plot and few Hobgoblins as a bunch of kids ham it up fighting with garden utensils, going to a club, and subjecting viewers to unintended horrors of Hobgoblins. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
148. Arachnophobia (1990, 110 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ Spiders make for an unconventional movie with Jeff Daniels carrying the show. It's plotted in interesting segments including an introduction that sets things up nicely and a chaotic spiders everywhere blowout conclusion. Format: Streaming [thanks Alyxstarr].
149. When A Stranger Calls (1979, 97 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Classic urban legend introduction but painfully slow in the middle with a too little too late conclusion, it's clever of them to separate parts of the film across time but I wish they had done more with it. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
150. Satanic (2016, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Serviceable dark magic film that's less about what will happen but more about how it will happen filled with dramatic irony. The satanism tourism segments are clever and the mysticism hard to swallow, it's unusual because there's not always a clear bad guy. Format: Streaming [Netflix].

October 26 [George Romero RIP Memorial Theme Night] (10 hours, 52 minutes watched)
151. Psychos in Love (1987, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Cartoonish and sleazy with a fun emphasis on corny humor that's so unrelenting it's charming; a strange hybrid of romantic comedy, self aware parody, and low budget blood splatter. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
152. The Crazies (1973, 103 minutes) ★★★★★★★★✰✰ The Crazies is one chaotic movie that wastes no time getting started; before you know it there are white hazmat suites everywhere. There's maybe too much going on but it definitely gives a good sense of panic. I love the idea that adults would just get inexplicably violent and this film initially smartly stays away from cheap shocks and gore focusing on the military command center and government prospective. Although I do think Romero's cynicism about government is a little too sarcastic/explicit at times. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme Subset
153. Monkey Shines (1988, 113 minutes) ★★★★✰✰✰✰✰✰ Mediocre killer monkey movie that's overly long shoehorning an odd sci-fi experiment and while some elements are clever (that there's a monkey that might kill for a crippled person even against their wishes and their physically paralyzed to stop it) but it never really came together for me. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
154. Don't Kill It (2016, 84 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Dolph Lundgren demon hunter starts with a shotgun to the face and carries out in a fast paced manner despite some occasionally awkward acting from Dolph. The premise lends itself to dark humor and high body counts. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
155. The Black Room (2016, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Part horror film part sex comedy that's not too raunchy flirting with parody at times but serves up a unique demonic plot oozing with mystery. Format: Streaming [Netflix].
156. The Eyes of My Mother (2016, 77 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Artistically short in black and white this disturbing film seems poetic but doesn't quite make sense because the lead is just so randomy deranged in a bittersweet way. Format: Streaming [Netflix].
157. The Burrowers (2008, 96 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Well paced atmospheric western horror with unusual fiends amid tons of scenic wheat grass and indians. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].

Dig Two Graves (2014, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Strange mystical revenge film that delves into themes of grief and isn't quite clear where things are headed until the end so kept me interested as a kid bargains for the return of her dead brother from moonshiners around an atmospheric backwoods town/lake. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
159. Messiah of Evil (1973, 90 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ What a strange fever dream of a movie. The voiceover narration over leering shots really messes with the head. I love how there's just strange stuff happening with no explanation like the lead is just unaware she is in a horror movie that's developing all around her but not especially impacting her. The film does a lot with a beach setting and a few wide eyed people in suits. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
160. Deadly Dreams (1988, 80 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Eighties coming of age film pierced by hallucinatory scenes of shotgun violence that confuse the lead and twists into a bleak film with some mean spirited characters and bloody sight gags. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
161. Phantasm (1979, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A surreal classic with lots of bizarre images and an epic score exploring themes of grief through strange fantasy. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
162. Phantasm II (1988, 97 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ I love sequels that are direct continuations and this road trip movie is fun expanding on Phantasm The spheres get an upgrade and there's a lot more sense of purpose as they hunt the Tall Man and his eerie dwarfs. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
163. Phantasm III: Lord of The Head (1994, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ This one gets deliciously weird with nunchucks and cryogenics and even more upgraded spheres but the eerie weirdness cannot be beat and it really builds up in this one with some gutsy twists. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
164. Phantasm IV: Oblivion (1998, 90 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ This one felt more aimless with more wondering around and some backstory to Tall Man; it doesn't really seem to get anywhere. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
165. JeruZelam (2015, 94 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Shot in a unique first person style (using the gimmick of 'smart' glasses) there's some fantastic images that mostly seem too computer generated. It works because of the characters, the culturally unique setting, and the point of view gimmick but a lot of the horror elements fall flat. Format: Streaming [Netflix].
166. Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1992, 86 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Not far out or energetic enough to be as much fun as a movie about a high school vampire hunter could be, it's bizarre seeing PeeWee Herman as a vampire. I've enjoyed Buffy movie in the past but this time it just seemed to fall flat. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].

October 28 [Parties Theme Night] (11 hours, 48 minutes watched)
167. Phantasm: Ravager (2016, 86 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Special effects are frequently distracting and poor but it's great to see a sequel come through. Some of the 'questioning reality' elements seem like a cop out but a overall the continuation is nicely over the top and more 'wtf' than scary. It still doesn't feel like a proper close since the ending comes out of nowhere. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
168. Scouts' Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse (2015, 93 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Vibrant energetic zombie humor with a feel good premise and some fun zombie splatter. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
169. House on Sorority Row (1983, 92 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ Mean spirited teens get some comeuppance in a routine slasher filled with camera perspective obscured villainy made more interested by a cool weapon and some artful imagery that occasionally stands out.. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
170. It Came From Outer Space (1953, 81 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Familiar plot of space aliens infiltrating townspeople with some social commentary that seems typical of 1950s sci fi; enjoyable but conventional (even if this came out before some similar movies it feels done before). Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
171. The Haunted Mansion (2003, 88 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Filled with the most typical Halloween haunted house imagery that often looks empty with an occasionally effective scene (skeletons) and a plot so thin there's not much hook. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
172. Girl vs. Monster (2012, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★✰✰✰✰ A poor man's Ghostbusters with some interesting ghosts (scarecrow guy is cool looking, bodily possession) and an upbeat teen bop party atmosphere. Sometimes kids movies pile on the camp and this one is no different but there's some charm behind the plastic toy ghost guns and low grade computer imagery. My daughter picked this one and it was a good family selection that even when my kids lost interest I enjoyed given tempered expectations. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
173. Belief: The Possession of Janet Moses (2015, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Docudrama about the Wainuiomata Exorcism where interview segments narrate dramatic reenactments that initially seems to over explain events but then every thing falls into place and it tells a chilling true story. There are some potentially interesting cultural terms that don't feel as fleshed out. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
174. Home Invasion (2016, 90 minutes) ★★✰✰✰✰✰✰✰✰ Laughably bad thriller with several stereotypical bad choices including characters who seem to hide in the middle of open rooms or villains who establish they have no time then waste it arguing. A heist movie with a slow moving house cat and mouse game and all parties inept. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 29 [Synth Score Theme Night] (9 hours, 32 minutes watched)
175. The Fog [Commentary w/ John Carptenter & Debra Hill] (2016, 86 minutes) [Not rated] A lot of talk about lighting and set design including details on shooting schedules. I didn't find the commentary especially entertaining but, similar to their commentary on Halloween, John Carpenter and Debra Hill leave a good impression of how they managed to pull off scenes on less budget than is typical. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing [of Commentary] Theme Subset
176. Let's Be Evil (2016, 83 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Tense with a first person perspective that makes great use of lighting mostly around a long nondescript corridor and a pumping soundtrack add to the frights. A great example of style over substance where there's not much plot and what's there is mostly predictable but it's well executed splashed in colorful blinking lights and aural cues. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing Theme
177. It Follows (2014, 107 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Holds up well, the long shots, pacing, and wtf weirdness is to my taste. I can see how it's flawed; the creature is sometimes weird just to be weird - like peeing on itself, it's often nonsensical schlock. Some have said that It Follows is a metaphor for sexually transmitted diseases but I'd counter that It Follows uses sex as a transmission just to be provocative with no intelligent subtext (it's nothing like STDs, unless I'm totally missing things) and that sort of shallow gimmick is ok. Ultimately I feel like It Follows is just the right mix of fast pacing, provocative nonsense, and an original feeling concept. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
178. Sorority Row (2009, 101 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ They removed some of the more interesting parts of the original keeping only the general plot. Gone is the cool weapon from the first replaced with an odd multipurpose tire iron with different utility knife like attachments. The twist in the original was more lurid and nicely strange, here it's really pedestrian. As a modern slasher Sorority Row is ok, nothing standout but as a remake it's a let down. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
179. Gremlins (1984, 107 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Gremlins is a clasic, I love the energy and the great special effects work. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
180. Cooties (2014, 88 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Great premise with well executed script from an assortment of good actors but the ending is a let down. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing

October 30 [Satanic / Witches Theme Night] (10 hours, 22 minutes watched)
181. Witchtrap [aka The Presence] (1989, 92 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Not great acting and strangely poor production values adds has some charm. Some of the effects were unintentionally funny but others, especially towards the end, more memorable. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme Subset
182. Eden Lake (2008, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Relentlessly bleak with some smart plot twists; some of the character motives seem questionable at times but this is one brutal film. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
183. The Devil's Domain (2016, 93 minutes) ★★★★★✰✰✰✰✰ Campy high school wish fulfillment exploring typical teen tropes with gory sarcasm and relentless exaggeration using social media elements as plot devices that leads to misery and inflated comeuppance; it's a farce more than it is scary with some cheap latex effects and some bittersweet drama. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing Theme
184. Havenhurst (2016, 85 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Mediocre film that I thought would be predictable given the moral tone to sinners disappearing but, while hardly original, it wasn't as predictable as I'd anticipated but the cliches are used effectively and I'll remember this more than other similar films I watched even if the mechanics are far fetched. Format: Streaming [Netflix]. 1st Viewing
185. Nightmare Before Christmas (1993, 76 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ I never especially got into Nightmare Before Christmas until my kids started enjoying it, my daughter was super excited to see Nightmare this year and wanted to wait until as close to Halloween as possible. It's a whimsical film filled with near constant sight gags surrounding a premise that's clever but plays out in the most obvious ways. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
186. Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016, 100 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Featuring one creepy kid and retro period stagings the slow burn pacing stars the family of a fake medium grieving their father comforted by a priest grieving the loss of his wife with a rich plot that draws on an otherworldly and unexpected part of history and uses some typical scare tactics is effective ways. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX].
187. [Adding together partial credit viewings 32B & 138B, these totaled 70 minutes]
188. Lake Bodom (2016, 85 minutes) ★★★★★★★★½✰ Taunt film with smart twists and a memorable ending, it's got an atmospheric campsite feel and just when it feels most predictable some follow-up happens that tilts things, seems to toy with conventions in intelligent ways to administer memorable shocks. Format: Streaming [Shudder].

October 31 [Halloween / Samhain Theme Night] (12 hours, 29 minutes watched)
189. Hack-O-Lantern [aka Halloween Night] (1988, 87 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ Hack-O-Lantern might be the definition of 'so bad it's good,' my favorite part is when a hair metal band seems to just appears out of nowhere to narrate part of the film in full octane song or a strange buttocks branding. There's a twist at the end that's good. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme
190. Jack-O (1995, 89 minutes) ★★★★★★★½✰✰ Self aware cheap thriller with meta tv clips, a cartoonish back story, and unusual killer. I'd heard of Jack-O when it out of print DVD commanded high prices but the reviews seemed so bad, I can see the appeal - it's a film steeped in Halloween atmosphere with an cheesy but eerie tone combining things like cheap special effects and dramatic soundtrack cues in a cornfield graveyard on Halloween. Format: DVD. [size=1][COLOR="green"]
191. Bird With the Crystal Plumage (1970, 96 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ Stylish and well staged thriller featuring an amateur detective sleuthing around to piece together an attempted murder he witnessed, it's got a cool twist and enough bloodsplatter to keep things interesting. I'll admit I'm not a big giallo fan (they tend to be too procedural and sometimes slow) but I enjoyed Bird. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing
192. Better Watch Out (2016, 89 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ Mean spirited take on holiday cheer that ended up different than I thought it would, probably better watching with the less you know in advance. A tense thriller with an unusual premise that's gleefully over the top. My wife felt like some of the younger actors were poor to a fault and successfully predicted a twist early on. I enjoyed it but parts come across juvenile and motives are not also convincing other than to justify some of the schlock. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
193. Dave Made a Maze (2017, 81 minutes) ★★★★★★★✰✰✰ A silly concept of a guy building a cardboard maze in his apartment living room that's actually a cavernous deathtrap complete with Minotaur and different metaphysical impediments. There are enough gags and constant twists that it's entertaining. The plot is straightforward but the onslaught of different maze mechanics is entertaining, while over the top the actors do a good job of keeping things dramatically anchored so despite the surroundings it never feels too far fetched. It's not an obvious 'horror' film but has elements. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
194. Monster House (2006, 91 minutes) ★★★★★½✰✰✰✰ A seasonal favorite with the kids. I like the idea of a kids haunted house movie and a lot of the tone is spot on but the backstory here is awkward. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. Theme
195. Carnage Park (2016, 81 minutes) ★★★★½✰✰✰✰✰ Fast paced with a gritty 'grindhouse' retro feel, weaves back and forth in time with manic hillbilly energy. I like some of the grindhouse sensibilities that make this plot so outrageous but some of the editing tricks are distracting - seems intentionally pink to mimic an aged reel, which gives a strange warmth but takes away from the film or some occasional flickering gas mask figure interludes. Ultimately this was too pastiche and was not ironic, brutal, or strange enough to be memorable. Format: Streaming [Vudu HDX]. 1st Viewing
196. The Simpsons' Treehouse of Terror [XX and XXI from Seasons 21-22 (2009-2010, 44 minutes) [No Star Ranking] Not prime Treehouse of Terror but they had some fun segments, like an town with an assortment of vampires. Format: Blu-ray. 1st Viewing Theme [Wildcard]
197. Halloween (1978, 91 minutes) ★★★★★★½✰✰✰ The Halloween films have never been my favorites, but I appreciate the fleshed out suburban setting and Donald Pleasance as an Ahab like character is good. The Shape is an especially creepy and mysterious stalker in this first installment and I think I've had trouble appreciating just the original without the years of mythos and culture that surrounds the franchise and later installments. Format: Blu-ray. Theme
