Start with Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes. Their output is wildly uneven, but if you don't like those two, then it is best to give up.

I dove in at Isolation Drills which is kind of their attempt at the big time but it's got solid anthemic rock mixed in with Bob Pollard's quirky songcraft. Next I bought Under the Bushes Under the Stars which I actually like more than B1000 and Alien Lanes. It's where I got hooked (obsessed) after taht I bought more and more and I am still absolutely amazed how many great songs Robert Pollard has written. I'd estimate I love 400+ songs by him which I can't say about anyone else. THe man is a marvel of modern music. Personal favs:
UTBUTS
Universal Truths and Cycles
How do you spell Heaven (The new album is amazing)
dozens more
As far as solo and outside band projects there's a never ending supply of greatness, but do not miss Robert Pollard With Doug Gillard - Speak Kindly Of Your Volunteer Fire Dept. One of the best albums in his canon.

Re: Guided By Voices - where to start?
Thanks. I'm going to look into these. This gives me a place to start.
I've been a Bobby Bare jr. fan for years and he's been playing guitar with Guided by Voices for the last few years. I picked up the Bloodshot records six pack. Which is a set of six 45s featuring drinking songs. One has Robert Pollard doing Drinker's Peace, which is a Guided by Voices song. I'm assuming a rerecording. The back has Bobby Bare jr doing One Bed, Two Girls, Three Bottles of Wine. A song he wrote with Hayes Carll.
Back to Guided by Voices. Does Robert Pollard ever stop writing music? There is a ridiculous amount of albums out there.

A friend who is a big fan, and in a band directly influenced by, suggested I start with Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes, but I never got around to listening to either. :/
