Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I am about to move. I've been going through my CD collection and I really haven't touched most of them in a long time. I rarely buy a disc anymore. Do any of you still buy them regularly? Did you have big collections and downsize or get of them all? I'm not sure what I want to do. Maybe I'll put some into a binder and chuck the cases. Trading them in seems like a waste of time with little payoff.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I sometimes buy CDs from the Deathwatch Asia label (now Digital World Audio). I may buy for some smaller bands too or if I want to support a kickstarter.

I'm not really sure what to do with the majority of CDs I have though. I don't have a CD player anymore, but I'd feel very leery of depending entirely on my mp3 collection always being around or services like spotify always having the exact edition I may want to hear.

Tough decision so I'm always interested in hearing what other people are doing these days.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I don't purchase a lot of new music these days. Occasionally I'll pick up a new CD at Target because some of their titles have exclusive bonus tracks. Whenever I travel overseas, I tend to look for International Exclusives for artists that I like. I travel to Asia a lot and believe it or not, physical media hasn't died there. CDs and Record stores are still relatively popular there.

But other than that, I don't normally purchase new CDs. I'm not fully into streaming music or buying stuff off iTunes, but I did purchase the Big Little Lies soundtrack off iTunes recently.

I think I have roughly 300-400 CDs. A lot of them I haven't listened to in years, but I have no intention of getting rid of them. Trying to sell them at an FYE or used book seller is a waste of time and money. You're probably only going to get $2-3 at most and that's for a relatively brand new title. Forget selling older stuff. I've seen FYE have hundreds of unsold stock of older titles that they can't get rid of.

dex, If you really want to downsize, I suggest you go through your collection, keep the titles you really want, the discs and liner notes and put them in giant binders.

The rest, I say bring them to a Good Will or your local library and use that for a future tax write off. That's what I've been doing for extraneous content that is clutter. That's more worth it than trying to waste time and sell them for chump change.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

My collecting-mania went thru a music phase back when CDs were first getting popular. I might have 1000 of the things, most I have met listened to in years if not decades. I can see myself getting rid of most of them someday, but like other things, it's a project I keep putting off.

Yea... I should add I'm not really into streaming either. I mean I use Spotify at work, but that's about it. I'll buy digital and burn discs to listen in the car. I have a large digital collection backed up on an external drive. I find it funny I'm more accepting of digital for music, but for movies...no way.

I still pick up some from smaller bands at their merch tables, but that's about it.

Very, very few, mainly because I have 3 Ikea CD shelves that are just about full, and I don't want to make room for more.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I do still buy but very slowly. I'll buy a disk at a concert if I like the band, and occasionally Amazon has great sales on disks that are sometimes cheaper than the MP3 version. I've maybe bought a couple dozen in the last year.
I have sold/traded disks in the past (what was that swap service, Lala? I got a few hard to find discs from that) but I probably won't anymore - if I get rid of them, I'll probably just donate them.
I think trading in or reselling would not be worth the time/energy unless you have some really rare discs.
A few years ago I sold my Murphy's Law Back with a Bong disk for something close to a hundred bucks on Amazon. But that is the extreme exception.

I still have four 100-count cassette racks in my attic and a big bag of them in the garage. Probably all melted now though.

I do buy MP3s, mostly from Amazon.com; I stream and download from Amazon music on my phone and computer, and listen to XM radio in the car.

I still buy maybe 2 a year. I have 700 or 800 of them. I almost never listen any of them anymore, but I still don't want to let them go.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

Yes / No

I still buy them from my favorite bands. I keep the disc in the car for a couple of months while I listen to it. I rip 'em and toss the disc in a tub in the basement.

Then there are some cases where Amazon has the disc cheaper than the MP3s(or they have the disc+rip cheap) so I'll go the disc route there as well.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I almost always buy music on CD, even though I mostly just pop the CD in my computer, rip it to iTunes, and never touch it again. I just like having a physical thing. I have been listening to CDs more in my car over the past few months, though. Everything before I got married is in storage, so the only music I have here is stuff I've bought since then, and there's always more than I think there is.

So far this month, I've bought the new albums by Hollerado and The New Pornographers, and I'm thinking about picking up PEARS' first album after really getting into Green Star.

Weirdly, not too many of the bands I listen to have gone all-digital, although it's starting to get more common that they'll be digital or vinyl, with no CD in the fray. Newer acts are definitely only on Bandcamp or whatever. Some stuff I have to import from Canada or the UK to get 'em on CD.

Yeah, I'm all about Spotify nowadays, but I do pick up the occasional CD to bring to a show to get signed by the band if I do any meet and greets.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I really don't buy as much music in general anymore. I have my favorites that I'll always pick up albums from but I've kind of fallen out of listening to a lot of music. A lot of times if there's a song I want to own I'll just download it from iTunes now though. I'm normally not on the digital bandwagon but if it's just a song or two that I like it's silly to buy a full physical album that I won't likely listen to very often. I honestly think over the past two or three years I've probably only bought around ten or so physical albums/soundtracks.

Got rid of them at one point. I'd buy only the absolute best. On vinyl though.

Anyone remember the old days when you had to buy the CD or cassette just to listen to one song on an otherwise turd-of-an-album? Singles only saved you a few bucks.

My favorite albums get play on Youtube. Often with official uploads.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

very rarely. Only if an album I really want is on CD and not vinyl. I have everything by The Band on vinyl. Wanting to round out my collection I picked up the 3 albums they released on CD in the 90's, as to my knowledge vinyl was never pressed.

But yeah, very rarely, i'm mostly vinyl/youtube.

just re-organized my CD library, I am keeping them. But joined Spotify premium this year to be selective on what I want to add moving forward. I have over 2000 in my collection and just started collecting records so Spotify is a good way to see what I want to add.

I haven't bought a CD in over a decade. Still have all of mine in boxes in the basement. Not even worth carrying them out to try to sell.

Nope. Can't remember the last CD I actually bought, but I have about 800 or so in boxes in storage. I got a free one with a record I bought last year... I'm not sure what they expected me to do with it.

As for records... I may have a bit of a problem...

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

I still buy for the occasional band that offers a pre-order bonus, or if a store has extra tracks for some reason. If I'm at a show, especially local bands, I'm more likely to buy a cd. I'll then immediately rip it to itunes, back it up, and put the discs in a box. I do still have all of my cds in boxes under my stairs.

Otherwise, I'll buy digitally, preferring Bandcamp over other sources.

No, I do not buy CDs anymore. When I thinned out the collection years ago I sold them off to Amazon/SecondSpin, etc.

Now there's Decluttr and they pay well depending on what the title is.

I own roughly 3000 CDs. Bought a ton during the hastings and secondspin sales, plus a few online and ebay places I know about.

Thanks for sharing this link. Have you found that Decluttr pays more than SecondSpin? I was about to send a bunch off to them but if D pays more they will get it. At least they will pay for you to ship it, unlike SS.

It depends. On some items they do. The last time I sent two orders to Decluttr/Secondspin I priced them both at the same time. SecondSpin will reimburse you shipping up to a certain amount, but you have to read their policy, because it's dependent on how many items you send me.

Re: Do you still buy CDs / have you gotten rid of them?

No / I'm Trying Too

I don't consider myself a nostalgic person but I can't seem to bring myself to recycle or throw out my collection. Most Goodwill or second hand stores around Los Angeles won't even take them anymore because they are so flooded with the things. So I actually leave them in a house that I rent out on VRBO in the hopes that the tenants will take them but they rarely do. I've had about 2000 discs in that condo and I always tell renters they are free to take what they want....yet they rarely do. In about two years I'm only down like 10 discs......but like 75 beach towels.
