Wonder Woman 1984 (2020, D: Jenkins) S: Gadot, Wiig -- News and Rumors

I don't think we need an official announcement to know there will be a sequel, so figured I start this to post any news.

One bit from The Hollywood Reporter:

'Wonder Woman' Director Patty Jenkins Not Signed for Sequel

A $103.3 million domestic opening usually means a sequel is a no-brainer — but director Patty Jenkins has yet to sign on the dotted line for a Wonder Woman follow-up.

While star Gal Gadot has an option in place for Wonder Woman 2 as part of her overall deal to appear in several DC movies, Warner Bros. executives enlisted Jenkins for just one film, a decision that could end up costing the studio millions of dollars if Jenkins' reps drive a hard bargain for her to return.

Sources say the studio intends to begin negotiations with Jenkins shortly (although the exact timing is unclear), and the filmmaker and her reps at CAA, Anonymous Content and Jackoway Tyerman will enjoy enormous leverage. Jenkins could not only return to the director's chair on Wonder Woman 2 but also could ink a more expansive deal that would allow her to work with DC Entertainment president and chief creative officer Geoff Johns on a script treatment for that movie and possibly others as well.

I think it depends on where WB/DC wants to go with the next film and how to incorporate WW into the overall DCEU.

I had read somewhere that Patty was contractually obligated to a sequel. Guess not. She'll get the gig anyways.

It's better for her that she's not obligated. She should be able to negotiate a better deal based on the success of the first film

It came from a profile on Jenkins and Gadot, ironically enough, from THR, I think.

Probably made sense for DC at the time given how shaky things were. Sure sucks now

Not so much shaky, but Jenkins wasn't a proven action director. Now she is and they'll probably gladly pay w/e she wants.

Please let the movie focus on a single villain (none of this cram-in-two-or-more villains crap), and please let it be Cheetah.

I'll be extremely surprised if the opponent isn't Cheetah, but also fairly surprised if there isn't some secondary opponent. Possibly Circe, since I think the ties to mythology are considered one of the strong points of the first film. IN which case it would probably make more sense to have Circe as the primary and Cheetah as the secondary.

My luck, some WB suit will say, "Who's Cheetah, Circe or Giganta? Harley Quinn is popular AND female. Let's make her the villain and move a ton of merch."

If the WB suit got their way, the No Man's Land scene wouldn't have happened. Guaranteed, if Jenkins returns, she, with Geoff Johns, will be in full charge of who the villain is.

Cheetah working with Circe would be a cool storyline, imho. Another avenue to take could be using Veronica Cale. She's Wonder Woman's version of Luthor so a modern cynical and morally corrupted businesswoman/genius vs the courageous and uncynical Diana could work too.

What did Jon Favreau make for Iron Man 2? She should be able to get 80% of that.

According to this site, he made $12M (back-end directing and producing).

The sequel will probably be a WWII story. Really enjoyed the first, so I hope they stick more with the Greek myth and shy away from her campy villians.

Didn't Jenkins say the next film will be set in contemporary America?

Interview with Geoff Johns from Variety:

Will Patty Jenkins be back to direct the sequel to “Wonder Woman”?
Johns: Patty and I are writing the treatment right now. The goal is to make another great “Wonder Woman” film. I had a blast making it with Patty the first time. We’ve got a cool idea for the second one.
