Dynasty (CW) -- Reboot of 80s soap -- Premieres 10/11/17
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/liv...s-at-cw-934334
'The O.C.' grads Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will oversee the revial of the ABC soap.
The CW is leaning hard into the soap genre.
The network, home to Jane the Virgin, is teaming with The O.C. creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage to reboot Dynasty, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The drama, which is in development, is based on the soap of the same name that aired for nine seasons on ABC and was created by Richard and Esther Shapiro and executive produced by Aaron Spelling. Both the Shapiros are attached to The CW reboot, which is being penned by Sallie Patrick (Limitless, Revenge), Schwartz and Savage. All three will exec produce. Fake Empire's Lis Rowinski will co-exec produce.
Here's the logline: "The Rolls Royce of all primetime soaps, returns in a modernized reboot that follows two of America's wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington — daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington — and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal — a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class. In an age where dynasties appear everywhere — from reality TV to the polling booths — this epic drama features the one percent in all its glitz and gloss, while exposing the dark underbelly: a corrupt world built on backroom deals, betrayal, and, in some cases, murder."
The drama hails from CBS Television Studios and Schwartz and Savage's Fake Empire (The O.C., Gossip Girl).
From 1981-89, Dynasty was one of the most successful primetime soap operas on TV. The ABC drama, a direct response to CBS hit Dallas, became one of megaproducer Spelling's biggest contributions during the 1980s. Set in Denver, Colo., and following a group of one-percenters (the Carrington family), Dynasty was the No. 1 show in America in 1985. The cast included, most notably, John Forsythe, Linda Evans and Joan Collins.
The revival comes five years after Collins said Esther Shapiro had been prepping a revival of the series that ultimately did not come to pass. The cast most recently reunited in 2015 for a Hallmark one-off in which they shared memories and more. ABC attempted to create a spinoff, The Colbys, with Spelling and the Shapiros attached but the series lasted only two years.
This is not the first primetime soap of yesteryear to get a reboot of late. TNT resurrected Dallas in 2012, with much of the original cast, to initial ratings success. But interest in the show quickly lagged and the death of star Larry Hagman, the center of both the 1978 original and the remake, prompted the network to pull the plug after just three seasons.
Reboots continue to remain in high demand as broadcast, cable and streaming outlets look for proven IP in a bid to cut through a cluttered scripted landscape that is quickly approaching 500 original series. Key to the remakes is having the original producers involved in some capacity as more studios look to monetize their existing film libraries.
Already in the works this season are reboots of Magnum P.I. (ABC), The Lost Boys (CW), Varsity Blues (CMT), The Departed (Amazon), Let the Right One In (TNT) and L.A. Law, though the latter does not yet have a network attached.

You'd think they would have learned their lesson after the failure of Melrose Place, and the disappointment of Dallas, although I guess 90210 did okay.

I have no confidence in this...especially when the press release doesn't even know how to spell "Krystle"
They'd be better off doing this the way DALLAS did...round up some of the old actors and mix them in with young newcomers.
I'm still in mourning over DALLAS...which actually got better as it went along, despite the loss of Hagman. Not enough people were tuning in, but the quality was there.

Don't need a remake. I like the idea of going the Dallas route, but not this...
Magnum, P.I. is supposed to be about Magnum's daughter Lily, which might be decent if done right.

Re: Dynasty reboot from the makers of Gossip Girl/The OC in development at CW
So dumb to try to mix in characters from the original series! Or any elements for that matter. The original Fallon character got whisked off by aliens last time we saw her. Are they going to tie that in?
This is just LAZY. There is no need to use the Carrington name or recycle anything from the original show. Fans of the original show don't want to see it and it won't make sense anyway.
The idea of 'DYNASTY' was a mother and father (Alexis and Blake) who become the heads of two rival companies and their descendants who find themselves having to fight to maintain and keep their share of the family fortune even as we watched their wealth create problems and destroy their lives on a weekly basis.
You don't need to use the same names or even set it in the same city. It could be 2 families anywhere involved in any industry. It's just LAZY WRITING and a lack of creativity when someone thinks they can recycle a show from 20 or 30 years ago.
I was too young to watch it when first aired but the DVDs just came out 10 years ago it was a fun binge watch one summer. The original Dynasty (like Dallas) was a classic of its genre and still feels relevant. I predict the remake will crash and burn.

Point taken.
But there is a world of difference between the Star Wars story which still had a large fan base and plenty of potential unexplored storylines and Dynasty which was generally agreed to have peaked around Season 6 after the Moldavian Wedding Massacre and mercifully ended after Season 9 when the audience had diminished considerably and things on the show started getting too ridiculous.
I think most people don't want to see original storylines revised so that characters like Fallon can conveniently come back. It cheapens the original story.
Leave Fallon in space with the aliens where she belongs!

Actually, Fallon was whisked away by aliens on the spinoff series, The Colbys, and she returned on Dynasty so it was already dealt with.

Dynasty -- Reboot of 80's soap opera -- ordered to series by The CW
This is from the creators of The OC and Gossip Girl. There are some familiar names in the cast.
No publicity photos or trailers yet. Will probably be available in another week or so.
This is definitely a complete reboot. New actors playing the characters from the original show.

Dynasty has been the one to beat at the CW this season, emerging as a favorite before the network’s executives had even officially heard the pitch and landed the project for development. It was picked up to pilot in the very first group and has been a front-runner throughout pilot season. Now, Dynasty is the first new series picked up by the CW for the 2017-18 season, with others coming today. It’s been a very competitive season at the CW, with all six pilots coming in strong.
The CW is looking to return to the primetime soap arena in a big way with Dynasty, a reboot of the iconic 1980s soap from Gossip Girl creators Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage and CBS TV Studios and Fake Empire.
In their return to the CW, Schwartz and Savage teamed with Revenge writer-producer Sallie Patrick and the original series’ creators, husband-and-wife duo Esther Shapiro & Richard Shapiro, for a new modern-day reboot of the classic Aaron Spelling-produced ABC series.
Co-written by Schwartz & Savage and Patrick , the new Dynasty stars Grant Show (Melrose Place), Elizabeth Gillies (Sex&Drugs&Rock&Roll), Nathalie Kelley (The Vampire Diaries), James Mackay (The Leftovers), Alan Dale (The O.C.), Sam Adegoke (Murder in the First), Robert Christopher Riley (Hit the Floor), and Rafael de la Fuente (Empire).
It follows two of America’s wealthiest families, the Carringtons and the Colbys, as they feud for control over their fortune and their children. The series will be told primarily through the perspectives of two women at odds: Fallon Carrington, daughter of billionaire Blake Carrington, and her soon-to-be stepmother, Cristal, a Hispanic woman marrying into this WASP family and America’s most powerful class.
Schwartz and Savage executive produce through their Fake Empire banner alongside Patrick and the Shapiros. Patrick will serve as showrunner. Fake Empire’s Lis Rowinski is as co-executive producer.
Schwartz and Savage sat with Esther and Richard Shapiro and CBS TV Studios last summer about possibly rebooting Dynasty. Schwartz and Savage then reached out to Patrick, whom they had been fans of.
The original series aired on ABC from 1981-89. It had an inauspicious start the first season before taking off as a ratings and pop culture phenom when Joan Collins joined the cast in a Season 2 revamp as the scheming Alexis. It finished in the primetime top 10 from 1982-86 and was the No. 1 show of the 1984-85 season, edging rival Dallas on CBS.
Schwartz and Savage, who recently became available to other studios after wrapping their overall deal at ABC Studios, have the Marvel’s Runaways series at Hulu.

Trailer for Dynasty reboot:
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/Uxacuu_vg8Y" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
Couple of observations:
Looks like Fallon was the focus of the trailer.
Grant Show (Jake from Melrose Place) is now Blake
Cristal or Krystal is a young hispanic hottie.
The Colby's are now black
and Sammy Jo is now a gay man
I'll at least check out the Pilot. Sounds like a train wreck already

The later Emma Samms version of Fallon was a somewhat different character, more like a "mother" or "victim" in the middle seasons (and The Colbys spinoff).

I really enjoyed the Dallas reboot sequel series. It was a shame it didn't continue, as it was really hitting its stride. I never watched Dynasty, but I would imagine it would be much more appealing to continue a saga in the form of a sequel reboot than just a straight up remake.

re: Dynasty (CW) -- Reboot of 80s soap -- Premieres 10/11/17
I kind of watched this in the background while doing other stuff on the PC. It's has a strange tone for The CW. The CW seems to go with campy sort of shows and this one was trying to be like a real drama while still having that glossy CW look.
I'm going to guess with the netflix tie in they will get a full season but at least this first ep was not very good.
The cast is a real mesh-mash of character that seem more like they just checked off boxes vs looking to really have a cast you can build a show around. Look at the cast pic, it's two females and six dudes? Most of them not core family as far as main characters go. Going to run a side story about the chauffeur? Maybe have a twisty story line with the 70 year old butler?

Thought it was okay. I was amused by some of it.
They made some pretty significant changes.
Cristal -- Young Hispanic hottie
Sammy Jo - Nephew of Crystal and Gay
Jeff Colby -- African-American
and the show takes place in Atlanta where the original takes place in Denver.
and I guess we're following the show though Fallon's eyes since she appears to be the lead character.
I did at the home movie of Steven playing the old school Dynasty theme on the piano with Fallon interrupting and doing some kind of rap.
Alexis did get a passing mention.

Well, that was fun and in line with what I was expecting. If the ratings decline, you just know they're going to get a "name" actress to come in and play Alexis. Whoever it is will have some huge shoes to fill.

It's a glossy soap and turned out pretty much as I expected for 2017 network fare. It wouldn't shock me if this finds a bigger audience overseas and stays afloat because of that revenue.
Most will recognize Cristal as the actress that played the main siren on last year's Vampire Diaries. She's pretty but an average actress.
