The 3rd Annual DVDTalk Make-Your-Own Comic Book Challenge - May 2017

Make-Your-Own-Challenge

What's a Comic Book Challenge?

- monthly threads to encourage more reading and discussion
- a way to figure out "what do I read next?"
- motivation to try different genres
- motivation to keep reading and make progress on our unread piles
- a place to get recommendations

How does it work?

- we pick a genre (or company, or title, or whatever) for a month
- we post in this thread and talk about what we plan to read and read throughout the month
- you could keep a spoilered list in one post and update it all month, or post as you read
- in theory the lists could be kept in a separate thread to allow for fancier formatting while avoiding clutter

What makes it a "challenge"?

- well, unofficially, the goal is to read 100 comics a month, but that isn't stressed
- the group discussion will challenge and encourage you to read more (the main goal of most participants I imagine)

Who can participate?

- anyone and everyone!
- you don't have to list your reading or even post at all to participate, but what's the fun in that?
- quasi-technically, anyone on the planet who reads a qualifying book for the month is a participant, whether they know it or not

When does it start and end?

- it begins at dusk on the last day of previous month, and ends at dawn on the first day of the next month
- this bonus time allows for possible "double counting" cross-Challenge content
- content eligible for both Challenges has the bonus of being able to be counted for all 24 hours of the last/first days of both Challenges

How does counting work?
- as with every other 'rule', we're pretty liberal and you can count any way you want really
- in general, a comic book counts as one
- for graphic novels and oversize books, feel free to count one for every twenty pages

Who wins?

- there are no losers, the person who reads one page a month is equal to the person who reads 20 books a day

What is the schedule?

January - TV/Movie/Book
February - Eisner/Harvey/Etc Winners
March - Rotating Company
April - TBD (random idea every year)
May - Make-Your-Own
June - Reality
July - Science Fiction
August - Fantasy
September - Outside-Your-Comfort-Zone
October - Horror
November - Comedy
December - Holiday (w/ bonus Thanksgiving and New Year's time)

Want a personal checklist to help you pick stuff to read?

Obviously you'll want to edit the below spoilered example checklist to fit your needs.

I'm sort of tempted to finish off my cosmic issues, but that's lame, so I'll pick something else. Maybe the Euro theme I pondered in the first challenge.

Eurocomics

Djinn vols. 1-4*
Lady S. vol. 1*
Blake and Mortimer: The Oath of the Five Lords*
Damocles vol. 1

I'm thinking about doing a non big five Challenge. Nothing from DC, Marvel, Dark Horse, Image, or Valiant.

Re: The 3rd Annual DVDTalk Make-Your-Own Comic Book Challenge - May 2017

I'm doing the Euro challenge and am three volumes into Djinn, a sexy tale about a harem legend and her generations-later descendant. I've started the last of the four-volume arc, and Comixology has up to 13 volumes, but is missing a couple, including #5. But I'll probably switch to something else anyway.

Most of the pages can't be posted here, but I like the style.

Re: The 3rd Annual DVDTalk Make-Your-Own Comic Book Challenge - May 2017

I really enjoyed the first volume of Lady S, a Franco-Belgian comic that I blind-bought either in a comixology sale or using a coupon. It's a political intelligence thriller, and the title character has a complicated personal history. I'm probably going to have to suck it up and buy another volume at full price. Comixology has five in English all with a release date of July 2016, but Amazon has nine in French (and annoyingly, their English ones are not linked to comixology ).

Re: The 3rd Annual DVDTalk Make-Your-Own Comic Book Challenge - May 2017

I hit on another winner, Damocles, about a private security agency. It has a similar look and feel to Lady S, but I'm not feeling burned out by repetition because the characters and story are very interesting, and the action layouts have a very cinematic feel. I'm going to have to shell out full price for more volumes of this.

I also read a volume of Blake and Mortimer, The Oath of the Five Lords. Generally this series is a bit slow for me, but this one was quite good with an interesting plot. It's still way too wordy in its captions, which is frustrating because good editing could easily pare that down.

Re: The 3rd Annual DVDTalk Make-Your-Own Comic Book Challenge - May 2017

I'll confess to somewhat failing in maximizing these Challenges lately.

While I'm keeping most of my reading compliant with them, I've been stressing keeping up with my one book a day average, and my monthly personal checklist. Just keeping up with those has soaked up most of my reading time, allowing for few deep dives into any subject or run.

I'll also confess that if Americans had voted properly I'd probably have triple the number of books read since November. Laughing at Trump and his merry band of incompetents consumes hours of each day.
