Rumor: SNES Classic Edition this Christmas

Figured this should get it's own thread compared to the NES Classic. Anyway, this seems like a brilliant idea. What could go wrong?

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/20...mini-this-year

Nintendo will follow up its smash hit NES microconsole with a mini version of the SNES, sources close to the company have confirmed to Eurogamer.

The SNES mini (or, to continue Nintendo's official branding, likely the Nintendo Classic Mini: Super Nintendo Entertainment System) is currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year. Development of the device is already under way, our sources have indicated.

Nintendo's plans for SNES mini are also a major reason why last year's NES mini did not see a reprieve from discontinuation, Eurogamer understands, despite the latter's continued popularity and sell-out status.

Is it me or does this make no sense? What does an SNES-mini have to do with the NES-mini getting discontinued. Shouldn't it be more of an incentive to keep the NES-mini on shelves so that people can buy both?

Either way, fuck you Nintendo. If I can't walk into a store at my leisure and get one on release day then I'm out.

Re: Rumor: SNES Classic Edition this Christmas

yeah, if you never see one on the shelves and none of your friends has one, then does it really exist? Still, hopefully the SNES version comes to fruition as the quality of games is much better compared to the NES in my opinion.

Re: Rumor: SNES Classic Edition this Christmas

So the NES Classic Edition console, that no one could get when it came out is now discontinued. Some people still might like to get one without paying the insane prices for it. Now they are going to do the same thing with the SNES?

If I can find one in a store with minimal effort, I'll pick one up. And if not, then I won't. It's only "fooling" if you are duped into paying a premium for it.

I still have my copy of Mame and every game ROM for the NES and SNES ever made and rarely play it.... so once again, no thanks Nintendo.

Nintendo trolled its older fanbase with the NES Classic. I think most people have wised up to their game now and this SNES Classic greatly disappoints in sales.

I think you're 100% wrong. It'll sell like gangbusters.

Re: Rumor: SNES Classic Edition this Christmas

The only way this makes sense to me in conjuction with the NES Classic cancellation is if the SNES Classic builds on the idea of the NES Classic in the following ways:
SNES Classic is say, $80 and includes 30 SNES games built-in, but also has WiFi and a ROM store that lets you pay between $2 and $5 per game for additional NES and SNES ROMs playable on the console. The networked store should also let you buy the 30-game bundle that came with the NES Classic for $15. This would reach the target market that was gobbling up the NES Classic, but would also allow Nintendo to continue making money off of a single console sale, which wasn't something the NES Classic provided them. The infrastructure to support a ROM store would be a nearly negligible cost for them, I would think, so selling additional game ROMs is practically pure profit and I bet they would sell a ton.

As I've said (lamented) before, this is what should happen. But there are proven to be way too many people out there who will bend over whichever way Nintendo tells them to.

Three generations of systems without proper account protocols, "new" 3DSes without AC adapters, the NES fiasco including outright lies.. none of it catches up to this company in any meaningful way. The fanbase continues to follow its marching orders.

Draven is probably right.

Like the dozens of people ticked off at Nintendo are going to compare to the legions of scalpers that are going to buy this thing up.

Can't wait until these show up on EBay at $600 a piece.

Seriously though, I have to wonder how much unsold NES classic product is on EBay with the people thinking they can make a quick buck.

Well we know one thing. It's not going to retail for $60. I can easily see a $100 price tag, if not more.

I've actually never player Link to the Past, so if it's included, and I assume it will be, I will purchase this one.

I wonder if they go with some kind of cartridge system to expand the library. I'd certainly be interested in buying a few packs (if I could actually find the machine itself).

Draven is right, this will sell like hotcakes... regardless of the game lineup or monkey-assed fanboys who couldn't get an NES-mini (myself included).

Re: Rumor: SNES Classic Edition this Christmas

I don't understand why they would make another one off console.

I get why the made the mini NES. They needed something to sell for the Christmas season.
But now that the Switch is out there is no point since it does nothing but cannibalize sales and take focus off the Switch.

The real question is why are they not making these classic titles available for download on the Switch?
Why go thru the expense and resources of tooling up and manufacturing another one off console instead of focusing on getting these titles made to download so you can push more sales of your main console?
