Vice -- Dick Cheney biopic (2018, D: McKay) S: Bale, Carrell, Adams, Rockwell
After diving into the economic crisis of 2008, “The Big Short’s” Adam McKay is taking aim at one of Washington’s most polarizing figures.
Sources tell Variety that Christian Bale, Steve Carell, and Amy Adams are in talks to star in McKay’s untitled Dick Cheney biopic for Paramount. Sources say Bale is on board to play the former vice president, Carell would portray Donald Rumsfeld, and Adams would play Lynne Cheney.
McKay’s Gary Sanchez Productions and Brad Pitt’s Plan B is on board to produce.
McKay will direct from his own screenplay with the studio and producers aiming to shoot the movie in the spring for an awards-season push, similar to “Big Short.” Producers are Pitt, Dede Gardner, and Jeremy Kleiner through Plan B along McKay and his Gary Sanchez partners, Will Ferrell and Kevin Messick.
Cheney served in the administrations of Richard Nixon, Gerald Ford, and George H.W. Bush before becoming the CEO of Halliburton. He was VP between 2001 and 2009 under George W. Bush and was at the center of foreign policy as that administration pursued post-9/11 wars in Afghanistan and Iraq along with “enhanced interrogation” programs against suspected terrorists.
McKay has been vocal recently about his countless hours spent researching Cheney and his climb to power, and has been working hard to get Bale on board as the titular politician.
Bale, who was nominated for best supporting actor for his work on “The Big Short,” can be seen next in Scott Cooper’s western “Hostiles.” Carell recently wrapped Richard Linklater’s “Last Flag Flying” and can be seen next in “Battle of the Sexes,” where he will play Bobbie Riggs. Adams is coming off a busy 2016 that included “Nocturnal Animals,” “Arrival,” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”
Bale, Carell, Adams, and McKay are all repped by WME.

McKay really impressed me with The Big Short. I have no interest in a Dick Cheney biopic but I had no interest in a movie about the housing market crisis either and that turned out great.
Frankly, I'd like to see McKay continue to spread his wings on serious movies rather than stupid comedies.

Also "Wall Street", imo, is another good example. Like you, I really have no interest in the subject matter but I'll see how the trailers look.

McKay has already lined up Christian Bale (The Dark Knight trilogy) in the starring role along with Steve Carrell (Foxcatcher) as Donald Rumsfeld.
Sam Rockwell to Play George W. Bush in Adam McKay's Dick Cheney Biopic (Exclusive)

Bill Pullman Joins Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney Movie As A Veep Himself
Pullman will play Nelson Rockefeller in the pic. As well as a frequent would-be Presidential candidate, the scion of one of America’s richest families served as Governor of New York for 14 years and as Gerald Ford’s VP.
So in summary:
The movie is called Backseat.
Christian Bale - Dick Cheney
Sam Rockwell - George W. Bush
Steve Carrell - Donald Rumsfeld
Bill Pullman - Nelson Rockefeller
Good cast, but I have zero interest in this.

The film opens with Cheney shooting Harry Whittington in the face, followed by a freeze frame and Bale narrating. "Well, I guess you're wondering how I got in this situation..."

I thought they already made three films showing Darth Vader's backstory. Damn you George Lucas!

Annapurna will release Adam McKay’s next feature on Dec. 14 in limited theaters with a wide expansion on Dec. 21.
This is the movie with Christian Bale playing Dick Cheney, Sam Rockwell as George W. Bush, Amy Adams as Lynne Cheney, and Steve Carell as Donald Rumsfeld. We are informed that the McKay scripted movie is not titled Backseat nor is it solely about Cheney. Bale has physically transformed himself to play the former Vice President, bleaching his eyebrows, shaving his head and putting on 40 pounds.
McKay’s previous film, the Oscar-winning The Big Short debuted on Dec. 11, 2015 in eight theaters before breaking to 1,585 locations over the Christmas holidays and then a further 2,529 over Golden Globes weekend 2016. The pic grossed $133.4M worldwide.

As much as I admire McKay and the actors, I just can't see this film doing anything but bomb.
Interest in the albino Darth Vader is hardly great.
I'm surprised it was even made.

I don't know, The Big Short was excellent and did very well and it was about the fucking stock market. I think Backseat could do well. Plus Adam McKay has never directed a bomb. I could see it being a critical hit and awards favourite and doing 50+ million.

OMG, can't believe that is Bale. That is an impressive transformation but I worry about his health. Wow, I am speechless. Didn't know anything about this film bit now I am really interested in seeing it. I loved The Big Short.

Annapurna’s Adam McKay-directed Dick Cheney movie is officially titled as Vice now. Pic will now go wide on Christmas Day instead of an original platform release that was to begin on Dec. 14. An official first trailer for the film will be released on Oct. 3.
