well, i did a reset of all settings, but it didn't do anything. i thought i would see a message that it was reset, but it did nothing. or if it worked all my settings were the factory settings.
i think i might not have a setting set correctly or something. i don't know. i took these pics. not the nest clarity but best i can do. see if you can come up something. thanks guys!

Well, those are nowhere close to the Rtings.com recommended settings I posted a few days ago. Did you at least try those?
I can for sure say you don't want the brightness and contrast set to maximum. The Rtings recommendation for brightness is 19.
The Black Adjust setting may be what's causing your problem. You have it set to high, the recommendation is off. That's almost for sure causing the picture to get lighter and darker.

I tried those, but what I posted looks to me like the best pq. I adjusted the black level like u suggested and see if that does it, but again, the picture looked best on high...

What you're seeing might be an action of having the brightness and contrast set too high.
When a lot of pure white is on the screen, it's going to light up like a flashlight. Remember how, on the old THX optimizer thing on DVDs, it would tell you to adjust the brightness before the white square started "blooming?"
I think the optimizer was designed for CRT sets, but it still sounds like the brightness/contrast might be overwhelming your picture. If that's your personal preference, then you'll just have to learn to live with it.

Well, I think it's finally fixed. Did a reset. Used Salty's link finally and things look good and no damn darkness problem! Thanks to all, especially MS.

Well, either take it to a Best Buy and try to get the Geek Squad to help. Or send it in to Sony for servicing. But, that might be a pain in the ass.
Unless this TV was really really expensive, worst case scenario, if this is just driving you crazy, purchase another TV. You can get a brand new 4K TV for around $400.

Bought a Sony a little over a year ago and had the same problem...way to dark. Changed all the settings and still to dark...hurt my eyes watching Bluray movies but TV seemed ok for some reason...not as dark from what I remember. Generally it was to uncomfortable to watch and then a pixel went out.
Bought it from Walmart and took it back within the 30 days of purchase and got a 48inch Vizio. Not sure what the problem was but if you can return it you should...ASAP if possible. Good luck whatever you do!

Have you kept up to date with firmware updates? Maybe there was an issue with that ambient light sensor or whatever that was fixed later on - just a random shot in the dark. And if you haven't already, seems like you should at least contact Sony support to see if it's a known or common issue.
