Mass Effect: Andromeda - 3/21/17
Bioware shows off the next generation Mass Effect for the first time
The next Mass Effect is indeed in development and will be "taking you to a whole new region of space". Based on a few shots of the game, it looks as though a new galactic map will feature alongside revamped character models and new planetary environments. Nothing too eyebrow-raising, then.
The Bioware trailer also revealed that the team are working on an all new IP, although no concrete details were provided. Check out the footage below.

Mass Effect was not only my favorite game series of the last generation, but probably one of my favorite of all time. Really looking forward to a new one, but disappointed that it's probably a couple years away.
There was an interview on Spike where someone from Bioware kind of alluded that had a unique way to touch upon the history of the franchise that would make fans happy.

Casey Hudson who has been a part of Bioware for awhile and involved in all the Mass Effect games is leaving the company.

Prediction: Mass Effect will still suck, and Mass Effect 3 will still have a terribly disappointing ending. Mass Effect 2 will still be perfect.

New Mass Effect will be written by Halo 4's writer
Can I put a clause in my contract that I can only be photographed with purple and blue lighting on either side of me, too? BioWare is introducing lead roles on its new Mass Effect project with nice, colorful studio photography and bios.
A lot of folks are familiar, in-house call ups. The creative director, Mac Walters, was the lead writer on Mass Effect 2 and 3. But there are some new folk, including newly announced lead writer Chris Schlerf, who secretly joined the company back in November of 2013, coming off of writing Halo 4.
Also added last year, Senior Development Director Chris Wynn has worked on Gears of War and more in his 15 year career.

Here's hoping they map out the new series properly and it features non of the narrative missteps of the previous trilogy.

It seems game info leaked via a survey of all things.

It sounds more like a soft reboot than an actual sequel.
More here.

The next Mass Effect game takes place in the Helius Cluster (a cluster of 100s of solar systems in the Andromeda Galaxy), far removed by time and space from Commander Shepard's heroic acts and the final events of the Mass Effect trilogy. You are a pathfinder, a combat trained but un-tested explorer leading an expedition into the Helius cluster to establish a new home for humanity. As you explore this sprawling series of solar systems (over 4x the size of Mass Effect 3), collecting resources and building colonies, you will encounter the savagery of untamed lands in the form of cut-throat outlaws and warring alien races. To survive and colonise the wild reaches of space, you will need to grow your arsenal, your ship, your crew and make strategic (and often uneasy) alliances to fight against increasingly menacing foes. Along the way, you will encounter the remains of a once powerful and mysterious alien race, the Remnant, whose forgotten technology holds the key to gaining power in this region of the galaxy. As you uncover who the Remnant were, and the mysteries their ruins contain, you are drawn into a violent race to find the source of their forgotten technology that will determine the fate of humanity.

Didn't they say before that it would not be a sequel, but a reboot?

I hope they scrap planet scanning!

From the leak, it seems they did scrap planet scanning in favor of returning to planet exploration. I just hope we get fully realized worlds and not the lazy maps from ME1 where you rode that poorly handling Mako (though I did cheat and use it to climb near vertical mountains).
I also hope they bring back the abandoned Dark Matter subplot from ME2. That was originally going to play into the ending of ME3 until the folks at Bioware came up with a "better" idea.

re: Mass Effect: Andromeda - 3/21/17
It's really pretty easy to create a sequel storyline to the Mass Effect trilogy, and maybe that's what they've done here.
Let's say during the Reaper War, the allied races secretly collaborated on a last-ditch effort to save the races of the galaxy should Commander Shepard fail: a colony ship sent to the Andromeda galaxy, populated by the Citadel races. This ship was so distant from the Milky Way that they were unaffected by the ending of Mass Effect 3. That way, you retain the technology and races and backstory of Mass Effect, but you also get to embark on a new story with new races as well.

I wish it would be more like Dragon Age, with the size of the game and the more open-range locations, but with 3rd person shooting when running into enemies.
