Saw it last night. Wow. Just wow. This was like a poem in movie form. Excellent use of silence by Barry Jenkins and by all the actors.

This one has stuck with me since watching it last week. The story being broken up into three acts is so smart. The acting is incredible, with so much being said by subtle gestures or tone inflection. Brittell's score is amazing. The cinematography, lighting, etc. all done so well. I'd much rather see this win BP over La La Land, since the contest seems to be between those two.

How this got made is an interesting story. The producer, Director and Cinematographer all went to film school together.

There was a piece on CBS Sunday Morning with all the actors, Jenkins, writer. Really good. Jenkins was also in this directors Closeup Up with the Hollywood Reporter show on Sundance. Jenkins, Chazelle, Washington, Stone, Gibson and lady who directed Queen of Katwe. Really good show btw.

The contest now appears to be between La La Land, this and Hidden Figures (won SAG Ensemble, La La Land was not nominated)

I've seen this a couple of times. I think it's really good, and almost certainly the best of the Best Picture nominated films I've seen so far. But I don't think it's that good, if you know what I mean. And there's at least a handful of better films from 2016 that didn't get nominated, like Paterson or The Lobster.

Saw this last night. Very good film, but I just don't get all the non-stop acclaim that Ali is receiving. He's only in the movie for about 15 minutes and his big moment (With Naomi Harris' character) ends before it begins. There were far more deserving performances to notice here.

I loved Ali's performance because he was the only grounded character in Little's world, dispensing strong advice and giving him a father figure he never had. His role may have been brief but his messages and presence reverberate throughout the film, culminating in act three when we meet Black, who is basically Juan 2.0 - ironic, since Juan told Little he needed to be his own man. Ali brought a level of warmth and comfort in a film where those things are fleeting and/or non-existent.

Moonlight is on DirecTV pay per view now. So I assume it's out on Blu Ray etc as well.
Figured most people didn't have a chance to see this one.

There's no list in the link, but if anyone would like to see it in theaters, here's your chance:

In its 20th weekend at the box office, A24’s Moonlight will expand to 1,500-plus theaters following its three Oscar wins Sunday.
That’s a bigger expansion than last year’s Best Picture winner Spotlight, which jumped to 1,227 theaters, and 2015’s Birdman, which flew to 1,213. Similar to those Best Pic winners, Moonlight‘s win comes at a time when it’s already available on DVD and electronic sellthrough/rental. Currently, the movie is in play at 585 venues and grossed $591K last weekend.

thought this was fantastic. unexpected. powerful. beautiful. glacial paced, but always magnetic. powerful acting. i will say that i am perplexed by Ali's win considering his screen time. i really expected him to be in the film much more and from what i heard i was pulling for him to win, which he did, but i thought it was for much more than this. only minor gripe, but way to go Jenkins and crew.

Streamed this the other night. I'm happy that such a low key and budget movie won the big prize. It's a really good story and very well acted. I hope more people get around to catching it, though it's not for everyone. Would not have been my pick for Best Picture, but La La Land wasn't either (that was Hell or High Water IMO).
As someone who lives in FL, I'm glad this was more or less a product of the Florida State film school program. This give the program a boost.
