Looks like a silly spoof of M. night movies, and yet I kinda want to watch it.

Maybe he'll elevate the film. There must've been something in the script, other than going full-Sybil, that attracted him.

Hmmm... I like it better when it was Cloverfield Lane but I'd probably rent this.

I kinda suspect that "the beast" will be real and McAvoy will actually change into it at the end... thus "the twist" we all come to expect and be let down by.

The main girl was in The Witch, and was excellent in that movie.

I know it's cool to hate Shyamalan but the last film he directed, The Visit was really pretty good in my opinion. This looks interesting and I like McAvoy so I'm in.

Yes, it's bizarre how he looks like the movie character

I'm glad it's sounding like this will be another strong Shyamalan film. Definitely will see it when it's out.

Re: Split (2017, D: M. Night Shyamalan) S: James McAvoy

The Visit was such an unbalanced film with its comedy, and that ending. I'm really surprised it stuck with audiences. Shyamalan's films are very peculiar. They're tonally doing their own thing. Question is whether we'll call it strange, new, and exciting. Or misdirected and hilariously bad.

This comes out this week. Has 80% on RT, but I don't think it has gotten by reviewed to all press yet... just at festivals. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/split_2017

For some reason I thought this had already come out.

I've been a Shyamalan defender in the past and can usually find something good in his films (except After Earth, that shit is indefensible!). I'll probably end up renting this at some point. Looks interesting.

Re: Split (2017, D: M. Night Shyamalan) S: James McAvoy

While he is definitely to blame for the lackluster nature of some of his latter output(everything after Signs and before The Visit), I don't think Shyamalan should get too much flack for After Earth. That was him acting strictly as a director for hire and I don't think he's too proud of it either.

I hope this movie is good and even if it starts slow, better to do so in the first act than crumple in the final one.

Ditto, except I can't defend Lady in the Water, either. I actually find The Happening quite entertaining (but at the same time wouldn't call it a successful film).

I love The Sixth Sense, Signs, and Unbreakable, and I thought The Village was way, way better than the reception it got. I find that film to be beautifully made and haunting, only wishing the entire "set in modern days" twist had been handled with more finesse. It's actually the film of his I revisit the most, after Sixth Sense.

The Visit was... a glimmer of hope. It was good but not great. If reviews continue to be strong for Split, I might drag my wife to see it in the theater.

I think The Village would have gotten a better reception except by that time audiences were already going into Shyamalan's movies looking for the twist. The Village is a beautifully haunting movie but no one was paying attention to that, they were just waiting for the twist ending, which we can agree was fairly clunky and obvious (I remember my brother called it while watching the trailer for the first time months before the movie was even released).

Unfortunately, Shyamalan has been saddled with the burden of having to deliver great twist endings. When the movie doesn't deliver a fantastic twist, made even harder because that's what the audience is already expecting, it's considered a failure.

That's not to say Shyamalan himself isn't himself responsible for much of the hate, he thought he had the Midas touch for awhile and started slacking a little in the story department and he perpetuated being the "twist ending director" by continuing to throw twist endings in his movies even when they weren't necessarily needed.

I still think he's a fantastic director and would love to see him try someone else's Hitchockian script.

Re: Split (2017, D: M. Night Shyamalan) S: James McAvoy

FWIW, I never considered the end of Signs to have a twist as much as revelation. I always felt that movie worked solidly throughout and the end was just a minor bit. The first time I saw Unbreakable I was a bit underwhelmed, but when I saw it a second time as a comic book origin movie I was completely floored. Never really cared for Sixth Sense. I wouldn't consider the end of Visit a twist as much as a revelation as well.

Re: Split (2017, D: M. Night Shyamalan) S: James McAvoy

My friend was talking about this today and how he saw a spoiler for it. I wasn't planning on seeing this even though it looked intriguing, but the spoiler makes me interested.

I'm not going in to spoilers about the main plot of the movie or how it unfolds, just a little tidbit about the ending. It's a big tease at something, so be warned if you want to be surprised and see the movie yourself. For those curious -

Spoiler:
There's a cameo of Bruce Willis at the end, tying this movie in to Unbreakable.
