Dragon Ball Super

http://kotaku.com/dragon-ball-is-get...yea-1700616322

It’s called Dragon Ball Super. And it’s the first new, original Dragon Ball television anime in nearly two decades.

The last Dragon Ball TV anime, Dragon Ball GT, aired from 1996 to 1997.

Yahoo News (via tipster Pyke) and Famitsu report that Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama will be handling the new anime’s story. The series will take place after Goku defeats Majin Buu, and the world has become a peaceful place again.

In Japanese, the title is Dragon Ball Chou (Super), as “chou” (超) means “super,” “hyper,” “ultra,” or even “very.”

The reason for the “chou” naming, Goku’s voice actor Masako Nozawa, explains is that the word is always used in Dragon Ball commercials, video games, and whatnot. Now it will go in the title of the new animated series that is set to air starting this July in Japan.
I'm not a very big fan of anime, but I grew up watching and reading Dragon Ball so this is neat to me.

Re: Dragon Ball Super

Oh, wow; nice. I was such a DBZ nerd back in the day. I had (still have?) a set of the movies on video CD long before they were dubbed and came here. They were in Mandarin with subtitles in a different, non English language. It was still a blast to watch them.

I doubt that the stock of this series ever diminished at all in Japan, I wonder if it'll raise its profile again in the U.S.?

Re: Dragon Ball Super

They should get the cast of DRAGONBALL EVOLUTION to do the English dub.

Re: Dragon Ball Super

GT was not created by Toriyama and not considered a true extension of the story.

GT could still happen after whatever stories they tell here, right?

Re: Dragon Ball Super

First we get the Sailor Moon remake last year and now we're getting a DBZ sequel this year? I'm gonna party like it's 1999!

I think DBGT has pretty much been disowned by the fan community. I can't speak for the creators, but I think they pretty much ignore it as well. I never saw GT despite being a huge DBZ fan, so I can't comment on the quality. When it was released over here, the general consensus seemed to be negative.

Re: Dragon Ball Super

I've only seen the first few episodes of GT but never did finish it. I'm a fan of Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z though, and even own the Viz release of the manga, so i'm more interested in this then I am in going back to finish watching GT.

Bandai started releasing collectible dragon ball action figures in their SH figuarts line. What's interesting to me is that most of the figures are online exclusives in Japan, but are being imported by an American distributor. They're basically making these figures for the American market, which says something about the popularity it still has here.

GT was pretty crappy, and near the end they went back to the continually escalating power scales. I wonder what kind of sequel we're going to get, a straight on fighting series with even more super Saiyan modes (the recent movie designs of a blue haired Goku and golden Freeza seemed pretty lazy) or some hybrid with toriyama comedy.

I remember as a kid reading the tankoubans and being so excited that Gohan beat cell, only to have him and the rest of the cast take a back seat once again to Goku in the Buu arc.

Re: Dragon Ball Super

I wonder how long this will last. I will watch. What a shock, an even more powerful evil that finds Earth! And I would be fine with less focus on Goku, DBZ abridged sums up my thoughts on him.

Re: Dragon Ball Super

This started today.

Was reading this about the plot - http://www.kanzenshuu.com/2015/07/01...s-series-plot/

“Dragon Ball Super” is a complete continuation of the Majin Buu story arc. It’s got a bit of post-battle aftermath, continues with the “Battle of Gods” arc where the God of Destruction Beerus appears and the “Revival of ‘F'” arc where Freeza comes back to life, and then, I’ve written a strange new story where they finally depart from this universe. They’re fighting against their neighbors, Universe 6! They’ll yell at me if I give away too many spoilers, so I’ll keep the rest a secret, but they’re chasing after giant Super Dragon Balls; I think things will unfold in a bright and simple way, that will be really fun and exciting!

Re: Dragon Ball Super

Wonder how long this can survive on nostalgia alone... it felt like that's all episode 1 had going for it.

Apparently it's going to be 100 episodes and the first two arcs will be retellings of the 14th and 15th movies, with the next part being all new story from what Akira stated in some interview according to what I read; but IDK if it's an accurate source or not.

Re: Dragon Ball Super

i had never watched any of the Dragon Ball series. i started watching season 1 last week and I am about 10 episodes in and it is extremely entertaining stuff. I also have picked up a couple of the movies -- Battle of the Gods and Resurrection of F. I haven't watched them yet though. I am extremely far behind in this series lol

Re: Dragon Ball Super

Are you watching the original Dragon Ball or DBZ. If DBZ, is it the original or the "Kai" remade/condensed version? Both are great.

As for the movies, the two you have are the two most recent. You have about 8-10 other movies which you'd want to watch first.

Cool. Kai is the series with new English voice actors with some fluff taken out. Enjoy the ride, it's a long one!

You should watch the very first series, "Dragon Ball" (1986), back when humor and imagination (e.g. Bulma's capsules) dominated the series and not the constant battles of DBZ.
