Finally getting to this. So far I'm loving it, 200 pages into it.

Not the best book Palahniuk has written. Wasn't a fan of the main characters. It feels like a parody of Fifty Shades Of Grey but with Grey as a mad scientist.

Started last night:

It's The first book I'm reading on my new Kindle Oasis

Now that it's done (it's a trilogy and finished, right?), is it worth it to go back and tackle The Twelve and City of Mirrors?

While this is supposed to be the second book of a trilogy, it seemed like it finished the story very nicely to me (though there are certainly other stories that can be told in this world). I really liked this (and the predecessor The Three Body Problem). Big ambitious smart hard sci-fi that reminds me more of Grandmasters like Asimov and Clarke than any modern writers.

I see on imdb that a Chinese movie adaptation of this series has been finished and gets released in China in a month. That could be interesting, though a cause for concern are the limited credits of the people making the movie. To do this series right would take a skilled hand, and I can easily imagine how it could go horribly wrong (turning the whole thing into some brainless action-filled alien invasion story ... which China's love of Transformers movies show there's big money there).

I just finished the whole trilogy over the past week. I guess these books are YA, they're definitely full of modern Hunger Games / Harry Potter YA tropes. It's just a bit darker and just a bit harsher than the YA standard, the characters are just a little more complicated and the gambits are all just a bit more outside of the box than typical YA though. The Institute sections of the first book alone would certainly make one hell of a movie if done right, they need to get on that..

Re: What Are You Reading? (June 2016)

Stories from the complete H.P. Lovecraft edited by Cthulhuchick. It has a bunch of stories that I've never read before, and I bought the Arkham House hardcover books edited by S.T. Joshi as they came out.

It turns out that those stories were left out for good reason. Most of them are pretty bad. I read "The Street" for the first time, and holy cow it's just plain embarrassing.

Had you read James Rollins before? I think that was the first book of his that I read back in the day (either that or Subterranean). Really fun action/adventure/thriller/sci-fi/horror.

Unfortunately I've drifted away from reading him, since everything seems to be part of his never-ending Sigma Force series (which I've tired of ... and I don't like how the series has little of the fantastical elements that got me into his writing in the first place).

Actually, this is my first book by him. I love stories grounded in reality with a bit of the fantastic, so I just added a few of his other books to my "want to read" list on Goodreads.

There are so many of the Sigma Force books, too many for me to delve into if it's straying away from his original style. Thanks for the heads up.

Reread a classic over the weekend:

I still don't like Daisy Buchanan (read the book several times now) but I understand her character's motivation a bit better.

.
I certainly think so, but I'm one that liked The Twelve despite the bad reviews.
It is not without its flaws, but as a whole the trilogy was a fun read for me.

Yes, it's YA but much darker, and I thought the first book was much too similar to Hunger Games. But once Golden Son came out, I thought it surpassed HG and came into its own. I loved Golden Son, and so far, I'm still thinking it's the best of the three, though Morning Star is getting better and better. Can't wait to finish it, though I'm the slowest reader I know.

The scene towards the beginning of Golden Sun where
Spoiler:
Darrow accepts what he has to do and challenges Cassius
is so thrilling that I think I've reread it four times. It's got everything: the underestimated good guy without any support, the sneering bad guy backed up by his cronies, the long setup, the deeper implications for the overall story, the complicating factors and the sweet, sweet way it all plays out. It's the pivotal moment in the entire series and the author crushed it.

Also, the best part of Morning Star is the last third.
