Give me some ideas on rearranging my HT equipment...with pics!

Figured this would be a way to help me out and show off your setup at the same time. I've had my gear setup in at least 4 different ways over the last 6-7 years. Right now everything is in a door-less wood cabinet with the TV mounted on the wall. This is not ideal for me for a couple of reasons. I have a turntable & there is barely enough room to use it. Another reason is getting in there to dust. The cabinet needs to be pulled away from the wall and the back removed (which I made myself and velcroed on). I'd like everything out in the open & easy to access. I'm thinking about installing one single floating shelf under the TV, but it would have to be around 8' long as 15 or 16" wide & I have not found anything like that. My setup consists of a Tivo Roamio, receiver, BR player, slim home theater PC, an old school Technics receiver, and a turntable. I've previously had the components on wall mounted shelves & a couple different standard TV stands.

yeah, the rack is very open so very difficult to maintain the wires.

Get yourself something like this, strap it to one leg of the rack, and you won't notice the cables ever again.

Decided on this...
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/pr...504/#/70294508

Exactly what I'm looking for, although I'll have to re-mount my TV/speakers around 6" higher.

Simple is awesome. The rack is the last thing you want people to see. My goal someday is to hide it all in a closet so it's completely invisible, but I'm pretty far from that right now.

Re: Give me some ideas on rearranging my HT equipment...with pics!

So I ended up with this...

It's pretty much exactly what I was looking for.
Only problem is I cannot figure out a way to wall mount it. The backing is pretty thin & although I'd be screwing into beams, I don't think the backing is strong enough to hold. A receiver, turntable, Tivo & BluRay player are all going on the top & my vinyl collection and home theater PC are going in the compartments, so there's gonna be some weight on it. If anyone can chime in with some ideas on wall mounting please do so. Thanks!

You want to take the wheels off and mount the whole thing part way up the wall?

Yes. I added the casters temporarily until I figure out a way to mount it on the wall.

The framing of the box seems pretty thin. I initially though of fashioning a french cleat, mounting one half to the wall, the other half to the box, but I'm not sure you could get a secure enough setting on the box.

looks like you didn't get the Ikea Besta, is that right? The Besta has a wall rack system that can be used to hang from the wall.

Right, I didnt. This one is actually better bc my vinyl collection fits perfectly in the compartments.

What about a tv wall mount to mount the box to the wall? Would that distribute the weight enough on the box to be secure? Maybe some large backing plates for the screws through the box, or extra screws to further distribute the load?

Did you figure it out?

If nothing else, put it on a shelf. Paint it black/wall color to make it disappear. A couple bolts through the bottom for stability.

I did figure out a way to possibly wall mount it, but I have been procrastinating as this would mean I'd have to re-route all cables which I have neatly tucked away behind the wall. I'll post some pictures when I eventually get to it.

Re: Give me some ideas on rearranging my HT equipment...with pics!

Finally started this project. First step was taking the TV off the wall and mounting it up higher along with the center channel. Will probably mount the shelf/cabinet next weekend & will post pics when it's done.

So this project was a massive amount of work & it still isn't completely finished. I change my setup every few years & hopefully won't get bored of this for a long time. Had my previous A/V cabinet in front of the hole in the wall & used it to run all cables... still need to patch it up.

How did you hang it on the wall? Is the back of the box made out of something stronger than the usual thin backing that typically comes on them?

Yes, it isn't made of that cheap cardboard backing, more like plywood, but I was still taking a chance. I glued two pieces of wood to the back of the unit running across it. One along the mid top and one along the mid bottom. I then screwed them in place. Then I secured two pieces of wood along the wall with 3 inch screws, into the beams, matching the length between each piece of wood on the unit to line up properly so the unit would 'rest' on the 2 pieces of wood on the wall. I then screwed the unit to the wall using 4 inch screws, going through the wood behind the unit and into the beams behind the wall. I used about 9 screws on the top piece of wood and 9 on the bottom piece. So, basically, the backing of the unit is holding all the weight. So far so good though.

Re: Give me some ideas on rearranging my HT equipment...with pics!

Right on. I guess even if the backing was a cardboard, it wouldn't be that hard to take it off and add something that was sturdier. The saga has come to an end, thanks for the updates along the way.
