I was in Japan 2 years ago on a trip. Went to a few music and DVD/BR stores. They are really expensive over there. I ended up not buying anything.

I think the titles average $30-50 for a single movie.

Yep, I remember stories a few years ago of Japanese customers importing anime BDs from the U.S. because they were so much cheaper.

And I don't know what JM is.

They released a 3D version of Battle Royale a few years back, but it doesn't have English subtitles. If you're already a fan of the film AND you have a 3D setup, it would be a pretty good pickup. They run about $70 new, but she could probably find it used for $50 or so.

There's also a Blu-ray of Night of the Living Dead out in Japan, and they're going for around $13. That might be an option. If you missed the Twilight Time releases of Fright Night, that can be found for about the same price. Another at that price point is De Palma's Sisters.

I pretty much only keep up with the horror and sci-fi releases, so that's all that I can really think of at the moment. Keep in mind that if you decide to have her pick up a Japanese-language movie, 98% of them don't carry English subtitles, a fact that thwarted me from buying more DVDs when I lived there in 2002-2004. First-time viewings of Ju-on, The Ring, and Dark Water in Japanese with no English subtitles were really, really frustrating.

I can imagine, that is why I wanted to lean towards English material that just for whatever reason or another got a better release in Japan. So far the tops of everyone's list seems to be NOTLD and JM.

That BR sounds awesome and while I do love my 3d, without the subs though...

That was my guess, but it's so old that I wasn't sure it'd be on anyone's mind as an obvious acronym.

The Japanese BD of John Carpenter's The Thing has all the extras from the DVD release.

You may also want to get the Japanese BD of King Kong (1976), available by itself as well as in a set with the 2005 Kong.

If you like the movie, get The Jacket Blu-ray. There are also tons of exclusive anime releases that will never see release in the US.

You know what would be easier? Instead of having your wife go out with a shopping list which may prove frustrating (can't find shop, Japanese title being different from the English, non-English speaking store staff, etc), just buy the discs you want from sites like Amazon Japan, have them sent to her hotel. Shipping is free within Japan.

Perhaps it's too late to suggest, but I believe a majority, if not all, of the Studio Ghibli films have the proper English subtitles on the Japanese dub.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, she doesn't go for 3 more weeks so plenty of time if anything else comes to mind.

And thanks on the Amazon Japan idea, I can send them to her parents house.

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just order from Amazon.jp? I haven't done it in awhile.
