Chris Carter was always the worst part of the show. His episodes were typically the worst ones of the series. This is just like Tim Kring & Heroes.

In his defense, Chris Carter wrote some great episodes as well. The early mythology episodes were fun to watch. The mythology got less interesting as time passed. This was his chance to basically start over and I think he really blew it.

Re: The X-Files (S10E06) -- Season Finale -- "My Struggle II" -- 2/22/16

The mytharc episodes before the first movie were all good to great. They became more and more convoluted after the movie happened and had to go in a different direction when Duchovny walked away.

Carter is no Kring, most of his episodes during the original nine seasons were fine.

From what I gathered during this return, a shadowy group of government men took alien technology for their own purposes and decided to thin the human population, possibly preventing an extinction predicted by said aliens.

So it looks like Carter et al. have made the aliens unwitting participants in humanity's destruction. I would guess we'll find out the aliens are actually helping out Mulder and Scully.

Yeah, but none of it makes any kind of logical sense. You want to reduce the population using a Trojan horse vaccine? Fine. Have it take effect 5-10 years later, not 40 or 50. What's the point? And what does saying it "started in 2012" even mean when the effects suddenly manifest for everyone in 2016 over the course of a day or two, other than a lame nod to continuity? It's Lost all over again. How hard is it to just come up with an overarching storyline in advance?

It was a mistake to try to cram a major mytharc into two episodes. I liked the concepts in the first and last episodes, but the execution was underwhelming. I also want to see no more of Mulder and Scully 2.0, yeah, even Lauren Ambrose, her performance was weak and her character was written poorly. Let's make another Scully but make her unlikable and condescending! Also why the fuck would they bring back Reyes? Nobody wanted to see her again, and I'm a defender of Dogget. Fox needs to do The X-Files right for season 11, 6 episodes is not enough. And give them a budget to hire actual directors. No more of this having each episode directed by the writer nonsense. Having said that, I still liked 2-5 and think the revival was better than season 9.

I like the concept but this is really where it falls apart, it basically suffered due to the short season. A global plaque that slowly manifests on the X-files? A global plaque that happens overnight in a single :45 minute episode?

I agree 6 episodes was not enough. The 2-episode mythology was a joke and trying to squeeze it in between 4 procedural episodes made this season seem really unfocused. Honestly, I was much more entertained by the procedural episodes than the serialized ones.

If the show returns, which most think it will, I think FOX shoulder order at least 10-13 episodes, resolve the cliffhanger and keep the rest of the episodes procedural. Feel free to end the season on a cliffhanger, but don't bother trying to come up with an arc.

I agree with an earlier comment that they should spend some more money and hire real TV directors like David Nutter, Bryan Spicer, Jon Cassar.

Bringing back Reyes served no purpose except as fan service in a nod to fans of her seasons.

I know hindsight is 20-20, but bringing back Cigarette-Smoking Man was a mistake.

This is absolute nonsense. Carter created the most exciting episodes of the mythology ie. Nisei/731, Anasazi/The Blessing Way/Paper Clip, Talitha Cumi/Herrenvolk, etc. The reason the quality dropped in later seasons is because initially he only ever envisioned the story going on for five seasons. That was his end goal and dream when he was first putting the show together. Obviously he never could have predicted how popular it would become. Season 6's Two Fathers/One Son serves as a wrap-up to his original mythology. Unfortunately instead of bringing things to a true close he decided to extend and create a new mythology arc because hey, fat stacks, and now the story is beyond him and has become flat-out preposterous.

In Carter's defense, Fox was probably going to continue the series with him or without him.

Finally caught up and feel neutral about it the return overall. Too bad the mythology episodes felt rushed and the non-mythology episodes weren't that good except one. But I only really disliked the magic mushroom episode.

I'm hoping things will be better with a longer season. Six was too short.

Eh, while they were no Mulder and Scully, I thought Reyes and Doggett were adequate

It that some kind of oxymoron. I like her and Patrick but I was watching the X-Files more out of habit than great TV.

For those who didn't read the FOX schedule thread, no X-Files next season unfortunately.

They are targeting a return for sometime in the 2017-18 season.

If it's going to be the same as the majority of what we got this last season... they can just not bother to do it.

Yeah, god, I detested the new conspiracy that retconned the alien colonization from the old series. We already saw enough of the inner workings of the Syndicate and other stuff went along with it that it just makes zero sense that all of it was faked in favor of a different conspiracy.

And I really wish they would quit killing off the CSM on-screen only to keep bringing him back. Next season he's going to be a talking head in a fucking jar.

Also wasn't a fan of the replacement Mulder and Scully they brought in. Seemed like a pretty naked attempt to hedge their bets on further seasons.

Worse was that replacement Mulder and Scully had literally zero likability.

I really don't think that was it. If you look at those two, they were just too similar to M & S to be actual replacements - they made them so similar as more of a meta commentary within this episode. No way they'll do a series with those two blanks as leads.
