Help on few Criterion titles...

Call me anal retentive or whatever you may like. I'm a quasi-Criterion completist, specializing only in modern cinema. However, I've made some special exceptions buying 15 pre-70's dvds (e.g. Spartacus, The Third Man, and anything Samurai or Sci-Fi).

I collect nearly all the editions released only on 70's to now, except for a handful I absolutely REFUSE to buy e.g. any with absense of English subtitles and SALO .

I need your help on these titles as I am having trouble deciding whether or not I'd want to buy these.

And these titles are...

Amarcord
Picnic at Hanging Rock
And the Ship sails On
Autumn Sonata
The Magic Flute
Vagabond
Cries and Whispers

Any comments (positive, scathing, neutral or whatever) are welcome! Pretty please?

- Amarcord ** / ****

- Picnic at Hanging Rock **** / ****

- And the Ship sails On 0 / ****

- Autumn Sonata **** / ****

- The Magic Flute (it's a Mozart opera sung in Swedish fuhgawdssake!)

- Vagabond haven't the foggiest

- Cries and Whispers **** / **** (I remember, when I saw this movie in the cinema, many years ago, that my thought upon leaving the theater was: 'Shall I slash my wrists now, or do I wait till next payday?' - You have been warned!)

Q.E.D.

I like the Fellini films, though they aren't his stongest films, and Vagabond.

I recommend all of them in varying degrees, but definitely DO NOT MISS Picnic at Hanging Rock. It is in my opinion, by far, Weir's best work and is nothing short of a masterpiece. Some people who posted in your other thread expressed their hatred for the movie, but as you can see, there are just as many people who consider it one of the best films. It depends on what you want from your cinema. If you are collecting Criterion, then you are *probably* interested in cinema that is off the beaten path and more thought provoking, so you should check it out.

Here's some info (may be some slight spoilers):

I'd highly recommend Autumn Sonata and Picnic at Haning Rock. I didn't particularly like Amarcord, and I haven't seen the others.
