Halo 5: Guardians (XB1, Fall 2015)

From Xbox.com:

The Halo Journey

Any time you transition to a new platform, there is the opportunity to look at things with a new perspective. For us at 343 Industries, the launch of the Xbox One was an opportunity to think about what stories we wanted to tell, how to tell them, and how best to push the “Halo” franchise to showcase the platform. And, most importantly, combining our passion for “Halo” with the vocal and informative input from our fans.

“Halo” isn’t simply a perennial game franchise, it’s a part of the Xbox platform itself. In terms of innovation and ideation, it’s sometimes important to people who might not even play “Halo.” And of course it’s a passion and an essential experience for two generations of gamers. So we asked ourselves, how do we begin and where do we go with “Halo” on Xbox One?

In the past, “Halo” games have pushed the Xbox forward, showcasing the console and its ecosystem in entertaining and innovative ways. Making a “Halo” game that runs at 60 frames per second, on dedicated servers, with the scope, features and scale we’ve been dreaming of for more than a decade, is non-trivial. It’s a task that we, at 343 Industries, are taking very seriously to ensure we deliver the “Halo” game that fans deserve, and a game that is built from the ground up for Xbox One.

I’m happy to reveal that “Halo 5: Guardians,” the next installment in the legendary saga of the Master Chief, will launch on Xbox One in fall of 2015. In the tradition of every “Halo” game since its debut in 2001, it is a massive and exciting project.

“Halo 5: Guardians” is a bigger effort than “Halo 4.” That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine. Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.

It’s a game that will hopefully demonstrate the talent, learnings and abilities of the 343 Industries team. A game that will incorporate the things we learned from “Halo 4” about technology, aesthetics, performance and scale – and perhaps more importantly, understanding and embracing a community of gamers who love what lies at the heart of this game, and the limitless potential of the “Halo” universe.

And 2015 won’t simply be the year of “Halo 5: Guardians,” it will also be a year that offers us a unique opportunity. The opportunity to invite old friends and new audiences into that universe through the “Halo” television series, launched as a unique collaboration with Steven Spielberg and some of the finest creative minds in the business. A series that will stand alone, as well as complement and enrich the game experience. We’ll have more to share on the “Halo” television series as we near its projected fall 2015 release.

Your Journey Begins in 2014

Many fans noted that I was very deliberate with my phrasing on stage at E3 last year. I spoke about a “journey,” rather than a destination – and that journey definitely begins in 2014 with a giant leap, rather than one small step. We’ll give you much more information about our plans for this year at the Xbox E3 2014 Media Briefing on June 9, and we’re confident that “Halo” fans will be pretty excited about the special plans we have in store.

So until E3, I’d like to express my gratitude to our massive and varied Halo community, whose energy, enthusiasm, criticism and kindness are the driving force behind what we do and what we hope to achieve in “Halo 5: Guardians.”

I wish they'd release these games on PC given I've no interest in getting a console just for them.

Hopefully they have some game play to show during E3. And fingers crossed for a Halo themed XB1 (w/o Kinect), that would make me bite.

We;ll I've got at least another year before getting a XO then. Now if we can get more specific info on Gears then I'm set.

i am one of the few that think the Halo games are freaking boring. I made it through 1, 2, and 3. It was a chore. I tried ODST and couldn't get 1 hour in before i cut it off. I avoided Reach and 4 altogether. I also find the story too confusing and pretentious. The musical score is quite good though.

They are great, classic games, but yeah, not all people like them.

So Halo in 2015 and Gears in 2016, right?

The best thing about these games, for some people, is the coop. Playing Halo with 2+ people, in Legendary even, is one of the most exciting things you can do in a videogame.

They always have a good mix of SP and MP. So everyone is pleased.

I've only played 1 and 4. I think 1 is still one of the best games ever made. I thought 4 was boring as sin, albeit technically sound. Still, I'd like to see what a "next-gen" Halo looks and moves like.

And again, it's smart for Microsoft to announce this kind of thing ahead of E3. You get on stage and announce the game is coming out in Fall 2015 when most people were thinking it would hit this holiday season and all that does is generate negative buzz. Someone in Washington has found a clue.

Re: Halo 5: Guardians (XB1, Fall 2015)

I think the first game is fantastic, it's repetitive but it had a convincing living/breathing world and the co-op play was a blast. I didn't care for Halo 2 or Halo 3 nearly as much and Halo 4 was a snooze fest (though it looked nice), none of them lived up to the potential hinted at in the original.

I'm more interested to see how this looks visually than actually playing it, should be purrty.

I guess I'm in the minority. I thought Halo 4 was fantastic (and I've played the entire series sans Reach).

I could never get into the Halo games. I played 1 and 3, but not a whole lot. Didn't hate them, but just didn't fall in love with them either.

I'll probably check this out, though, especially if the single-player campaign is any good.

Re: Halo 5: Guardians (XB1, Fall 2015)

I've played them all and generally like them though ODST just had something I couldn't put my finger on. The last one was actually fun and visually stunning. The Spartan Ops weekly missions were also good...able to do 4-plyr co-op with friends or randoms. I didn't do much MP...single play but the fun was doing co-op and later the "horde" type stuff. It looked good on the 360; just hope they can make it really shine on the XO.

I've played through them all, and I really liked the first one, but all of the campaigns play exactly the same and I've grown tired of it.

While that explanation might seem kind of lame and weaselly, in retrospect the original statement remains probably the most honest and accurate things announced at the 2013 Microsoft E3 Media Briefing event.

A lot of people are speculating that the line you bolded indicates we'll be getting the widely-rumored Halo 2 Anniversary release this fall. It would be a smart move.

Is that a "giant leap" though?

Maybe remastered everything Halo this year?

That's a "giant leap" for sure. All previous Halo games ported to XO would get me on-board to revisit the ones I played along with the ones I didn't. A nice $60 package for all the games would be ideal, but I could see it being $30 per title or $100 for the "collection."

Halo 4 was great. Really pushed the graphical capabilities of the 360.

I'm probably in the Minority but I thought 2 was the best in the series. Loved the part where you

http://www.engadget.com/2014/05/16/h...ef-collection/

Looks possible.

Master Chief is getting a facelift with an HD collection of his exploits. We've learned that Halo: Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3 and Halo 4 are being collected in a Master Chief-focused HD remaster coming from Microsoft. Our sources say that the set will zero in on Halo's most famous soldier to refresh audience's memories ahead of Halo 5's release, so curiosities like Halo 3: ODST and Halo: Reach likely won't be a part of the package. The game's developer is unknown at this point, but considering that Saber Interactive handled Combat Evolved Anniversary and is also working on an unannounced Xbox One project, the team is a likely suspect. Also unclear are plans for digital distribution, resolution and frame-rate (Microsoft bragged that will run at the next Halo will run at a "blistering" 60fps), piecemeal releases, or if the games will surface on other platforms as well (PC, anyone?)

Re: Halo 5: Guardians (XB1, Fall 2015)

I'm optimistic for this. Might not convince me to buy an Xbone, but if it's combined with a price drop, I might consider.

Halo 2 was the worst for me. Switching between Master Chief and the alien felt way to gimmicky.

The first one was repetitive, but it was definitely groundbreaking. I had a lot of fun playing it. The part where you first encounter The Flood is in my top 10 list of best gaming moments.

Reach and Halo 3 had pretty decent story lines. Halo 4 was a snore.
