Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

Did a search and discovered there was never a thread started on this game. It deserves one. It's actually a really well made horror-movie simulator. Not a horror game in the classic sense, this one plays with all the tropes and lets you be as smart or as stupid with your decisions as you like.

Just played a few hours and it's pretty fun.

The motion capture and acting is very good. Like L.A. Noir, the actors are instantly recognizable - including Hayden Panettiere, Peter Stormare (Fargo) and Rami Malek (Mr. Robot). It's a real trip for me as another main character is played by Meghan Martin who is actually a friend's daughter. It feels a little too personal when I'm trying to decide if she's going to have sex with some lunkhead or get herself decapitated. Next time I see her dad, I predict it'll be a little awkward.
Anyway, I'm a few hours in now and am quite enjoying it, in kind of a less emotional, much more campy Walking Dead sort of way...

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

I'm glad you made a thread for this. I bought it last night and finished it today. Worth every penny. It really is Heavy Rain with horror elements. I've actually been shying away from horror games these past few years cause of the anxiety and sense of dread most of them have. But this was just "fun" to play from beginning to end. You can't get lost and there's almost constant momentum. It's probably as close to a teenage slasher flick in game form as we'll ever get. This is definitely gonna end up in my top five of the year. Bring on the DLC!

it's pretty fun. and I didn't like Heavy Rain at all. Though this is definitely more of that style of play, I think a lot of it has to do with the atmosphere and environment. It's gorgeous to look at too.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

Yeah. Heavy Rain was kind of full of dread and sadness. This game is much more campy and fun. Also while both games have button prompts with character outcomes as a result, here it doesn't feel as difficult or frustrating -- no moving the stick in a counter-clockwise circle sort of stuff.
I like the "Don't Move" prompts. Those are a smart use of the Dual Shock controller, especially when you're trying to stay still and they throw a sudden jolt at you.
Also since Mr. Robot is my new TV obsession right now, it's such a trip essentially having Eliot as a main playable character. I have a vested interest in keeping him and Jess alive. The rest of the kids though, they're all fair game. Hope I can play some more this morning.

Spoiler:
And guess who are the first two to die for me!
Man they sure punish you for a mistaken button press in this game

Was this originally supposed to be an episodic game? The previously on bits are a little weird. Loving the game so far though.

No. It was originally developed as a PS3 move title.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

Finished my first playthrough last night with 2 survivors. Probably took around 9 hours and I definitely rushed through a few of the early chapters, so I missed some clues and totems. Next time maybe I'll try to save only all of the girls and get all of the clues.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

I haven't played Until Dawn yet, but I wouldn't expect it to be anything like those two games other than the "decisions affect the outcome" sort of thing. UD seems very much to be horror, where those other games are definitely not. Still, everyone should play LiS.

My copy of UD arrives on Wednesday "before 8pm". Bullshit, I tell you!

The word is that this'll be $39.99 at Best Buy this coming week...or $32 after GCU. Crazy after just a couple of weeks!

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

Alternatively it'll be $3 at Redbox for a rental from early Saturday Morning until 9 PM Sunday night by which time you'll have finished it and had an awesome time in the process.

I'm not saying it doesn't have replay value because I'm sure it does, but really it's best to experience it that first time.
I normally hate perma-death games where you have no real access to extra game save slots, but here it makes sense and heightens the experience a lot. I'm still kicking myself over a couple of poorly timed QT button presses that cost my "friends" dearly.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

So what you're saying is support Red Box instead of the Devs?

<size=1>Kidding.</size>

I don't mind buying short games since I tend to play them in 20 - 30 minute increments over weeks, but I do need them in the < $40 range.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

Hey it's your money and I'd be more than happy if this game was a hit, both for the developers and for my friend's daughter who stars in it. Any time a new sort of game appears and is genuinely good and fun, it's good for gamers. I'm just saying there aren't a ton of games that I'd consider an ideal overnight rental. This is one of them.

I bought it on release day but sure plan to ask for the difference in price back if/when it drops at Best Buy in the next week or so.

If it were another genre, maybe, but I can't not own an '80s slasher in video game form.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

According to CAG, next week's Best Buy ad has this for $39.99, but there's a lot of speculation that it's a typo, as it's listed in among other MSRP games instead of sale ones. I know I'll eventually pick this up, but am still a ways off from finishing Witcher 3 and then have MGS V, so I'll probably hold for an even cheaper price.

Re: Until Dawn (PS4 - 8/25/15)

My copy arrived today!
So far, I'm having fun with it. The Analyst sequences so far are pretty terrible, but otherwise, I'm enjoying the characters and relationships.

Spoiler:

So far, no one has died (except the two girls at the very beginning). The last scene just ended with Jess (I think) screaming, so I don't think she's dead yet, but... it's not looking good for her. I stopped at the part where Sam is starting her bath.

I wouldn't call the game 'scary'... not yet anyway, but it's fun, and the quick-time events are making me feel more and more tense about it, each time they come up.
