"Steal This Movie" charts the rise and fall of Abbie Hoffman -- activist, radical, fugitive, lover -- and leads us through the maze of music, politics and personal struggle of the late sixties and seventies"
Vincent D' Onofrio was great but kind of a boring movie.

Some great action scenes
I am tempted to buy the Criterion set though I have 3 of his movies from Arrow 4k.

Apex Netflix
Charlize Theron, Taron Egerton. Directed by Baltasar Kormakur. 2025
A rock climber and kayaker who finds herself being hunted in the wilds of Australia.
"Apex" is yet another Netflix film that is the very definition of a Netflix film. It's well-produced and perfectly competent, stripped down and efficient, and in six months I'll be struggling to remember a moment of it. I don't know how many of her stunts she actually performed (probably a lot of them), but Charlize Theron is thoroughly credible as a very athletic woman. She gives the film a lot of grit
While I generally like Taron Egerton, he's about as one-dimensional as a villain gets. It's as if he sprung out of the zeitgeist and he's a threat strictly because he's a Man. I will say that the opening scene where Charlize is climbing a mountain with Eric Bana, is far more effective and anxiety-inducing than anything that follows.

That was a doozy! Crazy stuff. I actually have some faith the new Texas Chainsaw may actually turn out ok (low bar) with Curry Barker at the helm.

Foxy Brown Arrow Video Blu-Ray
Pam Grier. Directed by Jack Hill. 1974
A voluptuous black woman takes a job as a high-class prostitute in order to get revenge on the mobsters who murdered her boyfriend.
"Foxy Brown" began life as "Burn, Coffy, Burn", but then AIP decided it didn't want to be in the sequel business and adjusted the script. "Foxy" isn't half the straight-no-chaser Blaxploitation Classic that "Coffy" is; it seems more interested in Fashion than Firepower. It does have a good cast and a wonderfully gruesome ending.
Arrow Video (or at least the Arrow Video of a decade ago) gives "Foxy Brown" a terrific Region B package (it's a companion release with "Coffy"). The disc has excellent picture quality and some nice featurettes, including interviews with Jack Hill's favorite supporting actor Sid Haig, Seventies Stuntman Supreme Bob Minor, and commentary from Director Jack Hill.

2025
Starz
"A writer (André Holland, Moonlight) navigates complicated relationships with his ex, an art gallery owner (Nicole Beharie, The Morning Show), and his current lover, a newly-single mother (DeWanda Wise, She's Gotta Have It), with the support of his best friend (Roy Wood Jr., The Daily Show) in a modern romance set against the rapidly changing landscape of Brooklyn, New York."
Usually not a fan of romance or relationship movies but this was not bad and I liked it.

Went to a showing of The Birdcage tonight with a theater 70% filled with fans of the film. Still warm off the glow of it but it was one of my favorite theater experiences in memory. When Albert pierced the toast it was like the portals opening in Endgame.
It's amazing how much of the film is basic, BASIC sitcom stuff. Not just the final dinner but a lot of things like ignoring what a character says for a moment only to come back to what was missed with a "What? What?" reaction. I've seen the movie conservatively 15 times but never focused on that because everyone is so on top of their game. It's arguably my favorite performance of everyone involved and I say that loving a lot of other stuff these people have done.

Had a good time with this one! A few nitpicks, mainly a bit too much humor, but overall enjoyable and wish it was doing better.

Showtime
From visionary filmmaker Nacho Vigalondo (Colossal)
"Grieving the loss of his girlfriend Daniela, Nicolás is consumed by sorrow. He sees a glimmer of hope when he's offered a chance to participate in a groundbreaking sleep therapy that simulates reality. But as dream and memory blur, he must confront what healing really means--and whether he's ready to let go."
A interesting premise but a boring movie

They Will Kill You HBO Max
Zazie Beetz. Directed by Kiril Sokolov, 2026
A woman answers a help wanted ad to be a housekeeper in a mysterious high-rise in New York City, not realizing she is entering a community that has seen a number of disappearances over the years and may be under the grip of a Satanic cult.
"They Will Kill You" had the bad luck to open a few days after "Ready or Not 2: Here I Come" a Horror sequel that had pretty much the same exact plot, -Two sisters trying to survive the night while being pursued by a murderous Satanic cult. Perhaps it wouldn't have made any difference, since Warner Brothers did nothing to promote the film. I imagine most people will only have heard of "Kill You" when it turns up on HBO on Saturday night.
"They Will Kill You" is a wild ride, a wannabe "Exploitation Film" for "Today's Audience". It's very much influenced by "Kill Bill" and Quentin Taratino, even including some loving close-ups of Zazie Beetz' feet. It begins with a flashback as Black Teen Asia Reaves and her sister Maria try to escape the clutches of their evil White Stepfather. When The Police close in (and, of course, they're on the father's side) Asia flees, leaving her sister behind. Ten years (and a Prison sentence) later, Asia returns for her sister, who is now on the staff of The Virgil, an exclusive high-rise in New York that caters to an upscale Satanic cult with supernatural abilities. Asia will fight to the death with a sword or any weapon she can find to save her sister.
The film is essentially a Supernatural Action film interspersed with flashbacks that flesh out the story of Asia and her sister. However, the camera work is more clever than the script, and clearly Russian director Kiril Sokolov (new to me) is having fun staging wild confrontations and off-beat camera angles. There is also an eff-ton of Gore. Heads are chopped off, Satanists are disemboweled and even an extracted eyeball creeps around for a look. Asia is brutally beaten and stabbed more than once. I was very much reminded of the early work of Sam Raimi and Peter Jackson (who was doing Comic Gore-Fests before he went legit with "Lord of the Rings"). The film tries to deal with serious Social issues and heartfelt relationship matters but it's pretty much upstaged by the persistent carnage and the film's more cartoonish sensibilities.
Zazie Beetz makes a convincing badass, though no human being could actually survive the level of punishment that is dealt to her. Patricia Arquette is competent as Lily, The Manager of The Virgil, -the primary villain, -though she's given a questionable accent. There's a subplot with Lily's husband of literal centuries that feels like a pure plot convenience. The final manifestation of The Devil is a nice bit of practical effects.
"They Will Kill You" is relentlessly grisly and downbeat, but it's all tongue-in-cheek and I was entertained.

1966. Another Eurospy cashing in on Bond craze. Incredibly strange, yet weirdly entertaining. I watched it for free on Fawsome out of curiosity. Had I blind bought the BD I wouldn't have regretted it.
