The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

We decided to split up Science Fiction and Fantasy, so save your sword and sorcery until August.

Preference is to avoid superheroes and stick to actual Sci-Fi, but we're quite liberal in the counting 'rules'.

As always, unofficial goal is to hit 100 books for the month, with graphic novels counting as one per twenty pages; but reading one book is just as good as 400. There is no 'winner' and no 'losers'.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

Oh, forgot the usual that it starts tonight at sundown and ends at sunrise on August 1st.

Cross Challenge Double Credit content is, as usual, given an extra grace period of all day today and all day on August 1st.

Of course, I'm not sure if anything could really count for Reality and Science Fiction. Perhaps a book about Sci-Fi?

Going to organize my comic room a bit today, and pull out some reading.

Only sure fire non digital reads are the complete run of Micronauts and, if I can find them, the old DC Time Warps.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

July 29
Star Wars: Lost Tribes of the Sith 1-3 - oddly fantasy oriented for a Star Wars book showing more primitive antics, hints nicely at shades of grey within the Sith side.

July 28
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - War 4-5 - seems to dead end focusing on small scale events in a larger war, teasing at a greater conflict that never seems to show.

July 27
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - War 1-3 - fair action but doesn't build on the Knights lore as much as I'd have liked.

July 26
The Incal v5: The Fifth Essence Part 2 - Planet Difool - unusual end to an surreal series, good imagery in places but in others unoriginal and overly spiritual. [counting 49 pages as 2 issues
The Incal v5: The Fifth Essence Part 1 - The Dreaming Galaxy - some awkward metaphysical spirituality that feels dated mixed with oddly familiar Star Wars plot (rebels take down a death ship). [counting 60 pages as 2 issues

July 24
The Incal v4: What Is Above - picks up nicely, nice twists. [counting 49 pages as 2 issues

July 22
The Incal v3: What Lies Beneath - stalls out a bit, still some fantasy imagery but the pacing doesn't feel as crisp. [counting 49 pages as 2 issues

Spoiler:
July 19
The Incal v2: The Luminous Incal - has a saturday morning cartoon sci fi fantasy feel. [counting 49 pages as 2 issues

July 18
The Incal v1: The Black Incal - surreal sci fi with quick pacing and nicely inked graphics showcasing a lively world. [counting 47 pages as 2 issues]

July 17
Girls 11-24 - really good book with an epic surreal scope and a near continuous plot across 24 issues; highly recommended

July 16
Girls 1-10 - initially I couldn't decide if it's really juvenile or filled with social subtext but Girls handles social commentary well and despite some slow pacing is a really clever fun series. So far all the issues have been near continuous, which I enjoy.
Caliban 3-7 - while dark parts veer into the too fantastic and others feel redundant to space horror tropes, worth reading due to strong characters and gutsy ambition.

July 15
Caliban 1-2 - atmospheric 'wtf' sci-fi with a lot of character interaction so far; creepy and mysterious setup.

July 14
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 41-50 - the last few issues tie things together nicely but everything feels a little too self contained and the war background feels like an overlong tangent.

July 13
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 38-40

July 12
Star Wars Tales 9 - cool Darth Vader versus Darth Maul matchup

July 11
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 36-37 - struggles to find footing after cashing in it's narrative last storyline, I'm not sure the characters are strong enough to carry things along but curious to see how it plays out.

July 10
Grindhouse: Doors Open and Midnight 3-4 - some of the exploitation tropes were fun but the story was not great or far out enough to justify the 'grindhouse' imagery.

July 9
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 26-35 - plot threads come to fruition with spectacular fireworks but many of the characters feel too one dimensional or even cartoonish that it hurts some of the gravity.

July 8
Usagi Yojimbo: Senso 1-6 - fun but disposable, the samurai versus spacecraft vibe was clever but the subtlety of samurai/western didn't feel like a great fit against the under-developed spacemen and a really 'meh' ending.

July 7
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 15-25 - cool use of cover art to foreshadow and set the tone, some of the mysticism is interesting and there's nice homages to the original trilogy films.

July 6
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 10-14 - some of the plot threads are starting to drag on and splinter into awkwardly different paths, still enjoyable.

July 5
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 6-9 - really nice twists and history, sways between being too political and then landing a nice plot reveal payoff.

July 4
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1-5 - some set up and characters that really sway from my expectations but fun.

July 3
Mars Attacks (2013/IDW) 6-10 - cartoonish series that makes the most of a thin premise but seems to be left hanging.

July 2
Mars Attacks (2013/IDW) 2-5

July 1
Terminal Hero 1-6: flirts with being more existential than it is... still enjoyable with some cool imagery but could have been better and parts felt cheap, rushed, and anticlimatic - a good idea with lukewarm execution
Mars Attacks (2013/IDW) 1

Total Issues: 125

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

I'd like to read Lazarus, but I haven't picked up vol 3 because they double-dipped with the nice HC collecting vols 1-2 so I might hold out for another of those.

7/1
Legion of Superheroes (Superboy 193-202) (Showcase Presents LOSH vol. 5)
Defenders 31-50 (Essential Defenders vol. 3) [more fantasy than sci-fi so listing but not really counting]

7/6
The Walking Dead 127-132* (TPB 22)

7/7
The Walking Dead 133-138* (TPB 23)

7/9
Aldebaran vol. 1: The Catastrophe*

7/17
Aldebaran vol 2: The Group*

7/19
Aldebaran vol. 3: The Creature*

7/24
(Invincible 109-114* (TPB 20))

7/27
(Invincible 115-120* (TPB 21))

7/29
Girl in the Golden Flower*, The Mad Planet*, Captain Comet: Lights, Camera..Invasion!*, Star Hawkins: The Case of the Counterfeit Credits*, Adam Strange: The Weapon that Swallowed Men* (Mystery in Space DC Pulp Fiction Library)

7/31
Legion of Super-Heroes 284-296 (The Great Darkness Saga)

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

I'll put my list here:

July 31
The Bunker 6-11

Total books read 98. So close to 100! Maybe I can squeeze in 2 more today, but I'm planning to see Ant-Man this afternoon and going to a music festival tonight.

Spoiler:

July 1
Rasl 1-3

July 2
Rasl 4-5

July 3
Rasl 6-7

That's all my Rasl, but I ordered the third book from Amazon (for like 50 cents, plus $3.99 shipping)

July 4
Legenderry 6-7 (steampunk is close enough to sci-if, right?)
Our Love is Real (very interesting, very weird comic)
The Private Eye 9-10
Universe 1-2, the other Panel Syndicate series, very weird sci-fi one-offs with a lot of humor.

July 5
Lazarus 5-9
Manhattan Projects 16-20
The Bunker 1-4

July 6-8
Space Ducks by Daniel Johnston. It's a little over 100 pages, so I'm counting it as 5 issues. Insane comic about ducks fighting Satan. Lots of fighting, not a lot of narrative flow.
Rasl 8-11
Terra Obscura 1

July 10
Things are going to be slow for a few days, since I'm at a music festival.
Satellite Sam #1: This is probably stretching things a bit, but it's about actors on a 1950s sci-if series.

July 11-13
Terra Obscura 2-3

July 14
Terra Obscura 4

July 15-16
Terra Obscura 5-6

July 17
Terra Obscura Vol 2 1

July 18
Terra Obscura Vol. 2 2
Satellite Sam 2-3

July 19
Terra Obscura Vol. 2 3-6

July 20
The Death Ray

July 21
Tech Jacket 1-6

July 25
Sattelite Sam 4-5. I feel kind of guilty counting this, but not too guilty.
Letter 44 1-6

July 26
Letter 44 7-14
Trillium 1-8

July 27
Letter 44 15-17

July 28
The Bunker 5

July 30
The Red Wing 1-4

Both Image and Dark Horse have several highly rated Sci-Fi series. I'm thinking of reading the following from Dark Horse:

Deep Gravity
The Massive

And wow, just looking thru my DH library there is so much good stuff that could count. Nexus, all the Aliens and Predator and Terminator and Robocop stuff, hundreds of Star Wars books. Holy moley, I'm set for the next 50 Julys.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

Yesterday I read a classic sci-if funny from the late 80s, Dr Watchstop: Adventures in Time and Space by Ken Macklin. Anyone remember this old gem? He didn't do many comics unfortunately, but this little humor strip showed up in places like Marvel's Epic and that anthropomorphic anthology Critters. Read it to my wife and she really enjoyed it, giving me a faint hope of someday luring her into this hobby.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

Not one of my strongest genres, but I know I have some stuff in my Comixology and Dark Horse digital libraries that I can read. I actually have some free time this month, so that is helpful too.

Total "Issues" Read: 50

Spoiler:

1. Pluto Vol. 1-5 (39 chapters)
2. Warren Ellis' Ocean 1-6
3. Orbiter (counts as 5)

Please forgive the multi-thread cross post everyone, but we're doing a Christmas in July gift exchange here in Comic Book Talk and wanted to give everyone a chance to participate.

Everyone will be given a name, you'll PM each other addresses, and send a little mystery gift bag of comics or comic-related trinkets.

Don't reply in this thread, but please see the below thread for more details and to sign up.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

Just read a cool title I picked up on a whim on Free Comic Book Day and decided to read for the challenge. It's called Aldebaran: The Catastrophe by a French (translated) author named Leo about an off-world Earth colony that starts having strange things happen to it. I like how they set up the world and the eerie mood. I'm going to see if my LCS has the second and third volumes.

Re: The First Annual DVDTalk Science Fiction Comic Book Challenge - July 2015

I'll put my list here:
Spoiler:

3 - Silver Age Sci-Fi Companion - Cross Challenge double credit book from TwoMorrows.
5 - Orbiter - Finally read this Warren Ellis and Colleen Doran book. Good, but I recall it being hyped up to something extraordinary.
1 - Ray Bradbury Comics #1 - This 1993 Topps comic brought back some memories. There's a nice little tribute story to Ray Harryhausen; but the highlight is dueling adaptations of an old Bradbury time travel dinosaur hunt story. The modern take is by Richard Corben, and then the classic EC Comics tale by Al Willamson rounds out the issue to perfection.
2 - Predator versus Magnus Robot Fighter - The recent thread here has had be anxious to read my crossover books. This entertained me more than I imagined going in.
2 - Silver Surfer/Rune - I don't remember this grand merging of the Malibu universe into Marvel; but this story wasn't much more than average.
3 - Dr. Watchstop: Adventures in Time and Space - Beautiful art and hilarious short stories.
- Micronauts 1-22, Annual 1
7 - The X-Files 0-6 - The 2008-2009 Wildstorm series.
Avengers/Inhumans FCBD
Princess Leia
4 - Reset
3 - Halo: Initiation
Past Always
4 - Deep Gravity 1-4
3 - Superman and Spider-Man
5 - Superman vs the Amazing Spider-Man
3 - Time Twisters 1-3
3 - Sergio Destroys the DC Universe
2 - Super-Heroes Battle Super-Gorillas
1 - Archie vs Predator 1
1 - Spontaneous 1
2 - The Titans 1-2
1 - Bitch Planet 1
1 - Cyclops 1
1 - Desender 1
1 - Enormous 1
4 - Hawken: Genesis 1-4
1 - The Mysterious Strangers 1
1 - Model A 1
1 - Spontaneous 1
1 - Spread 1
1 - Rocket Salvage 1
1 - RunLoveKill 1
1 - Southern Cross 1
1 - Star Trek: Harlan Ellison's City on the Edge of Forever 1

I read through Girls by the Luna Brothers and it was a really good book with an epic surreal scope and a near continuous plot across 24 issues; highly recommended.

I have one issue of Girls but haven't gotten around to reading it yet.

Would cosmic Marvel be considered sci-fi, or is more fantasy-ish? It has spaceships and shit like that.
