One of the biggest highlights of the show for me. I really never thought this would ever see the light of day. I still need to play 2.

There's still no legitimate way to play 1 & 2, right? I mean, other than finding a Dreamcast or Xbox and copies of the games?
And this is a direct continuation of the story?
I mean, I want to be excited about this, but... I guess Kickstarter worked, so I'm going to go out on a limb and say we won't actually see this in 2017.
Anyway, you can get the original Shenmue soundtrack on vinyl here:

Wonder why XBox isn't a stretch goal, unless there's some thing else going on with rights and Sony or Sega? I'd like to play the older games too as I never have before.

The first one was beautiful with a great sense of location, time and atmosphere, but also wasn't much of a game. Never did get to play the second.

I'm assuming that Sony has already bankrolled this game and the Kickstarter is more to garner attention and/or gauge interest than anything else, hence Sony and the console exclusivity.

I've been waiting 14 years for this. I got/received a Dreamcast primarily for Shenmue. Same with the Xbox primarily for Shenmue II and JSRF (due to the U.S. release being fucking canceled, but let's not go there, this is a happy time). Now I'll be getting a PS4 in large part due to Shenmue III, so I guess you can say I'm a huge fan of this series.
I'm sure the first two will be on the PS Store at some point, considering there were rumors of ports specifically to the PS3, around the time JSR came out.

Aaaw yeah, my quest for sailors continues! Played through the first two and was so disappointed the 3rd game never materialized...until now!

Now I'm getting greedy and wondering whether we'll get more than just Shenmue III, considering Yu Suzuki's original plan was for 5 games or so. But holy shit, $29 for the game itself is a steal, if it's anywhere near as big as the first two.

Surprise, Sony confirmed that yes they are financially supporting the game.Kickstarter was mainly to gauge interest, as suspected. I don't have a link handy, sorry.

It makes sense, $2 million is nothing for a game like this, when the original was the most expensive game of all time (up to that point). It was often stated during that time that for it to break even, everybody who bought a Dreamcast would have had to buy 2 copies.

Shenmue came out in 1999 in Japan and looked like this:
Grand Theft Auto 3 came out in 2001 and looked like:
Now we have lower budget games that look like:

re: Shenmue 3 (8/27/2019: PS4, PC)
True, but even back then the graphics weren't the selling point. It was the immersive environment, there was so much to do, people to talk to, games within games, real world items. Now, a lot of that is commonplace but back then with the fully realized world, that was nuts. There was a moment when I was exploring a hidden room in Ryo's house, and the overhead bulb went out. I had to run to the store to pick up a replacement bulb to light the room, in order to explore the areA. I'm sure that might sound dumb as a description, but that was a pretty cool moment, since it was a pretty unique moment, not like it would always happen.

Good points about the release date, I think it's easy to get caught up in the hype by name alone but stopping to think about it I've been burned by so many PC Kickstarter projects that took so long to come out. Looks awesome on paper, until you realize it's years and years out.
At least it's coming on PC, so if I don't have a PS4 by then i'll have a platform to play it on.

With todays engines, I don't think submissions of returning home with a lightbulb would be hard to achieve.

And visually it still holds up quite well for a 15 year old title.

So basically they just used Kickstarter to gauge interest before throwing more of their own money at it? Seems smart and shady all at the same time, but if it gets a game made more power to them.
Shenmue 3 developer Ys Net will receive development help from the PlayStation team, said Sony's Gio Corsi today during the PlayStation E3 livestream.
Corsi, the director of Sony's Third-Party Production department, said that Sony first met with Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki at the 2014 Game Developers Conference to get this process started. The parties agreed to launch a Kickstarter campaign, and they set the goal at $2 million to gauge whether there was enough fan interest to justify making the game.
"If the fans come in and back it, then absolutely we're going to make this a reality," said Corsi, explaining Sony's rationale in an interview with Sid Shuman of the PlayStation Blog. Corsi added that Shenmue 3 was easily the most-requested title in the Third-Party Production team's "Building the List" initiative, a hashtag campaign in which people suggest games for Sony to bring to PlayStation platforms.

Sony and PlayStation is definitely a partner in this game," said Corsi. "And it's going be run through Third-Party Production. We're going to help Ys Net get the game done. We're going to be partners on it the whole way."
Ys Net has not announced any other funding sources beyond the Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3. Suzuki said during a GDC 2011 panel that the original Shenmue, which debuted in 1999, had a production budget of $47 million — over 23 times that of the Shenmue 3 Kickstarter campaign's goal.
PlayStation's Third-Party Production team works with outside studios to bring games to PlayStation platforms. The group is also helping Capcom with Street Fighter 5; both that game and Shenmue 3 are in development for PlayStation 4 and Windows PC. Ys Net currently estimates it will launch Shenmue 3 in December 2017.

Yeah, I think everybody figured that and is kind of a misappropriation of Kickstarter. At $29.99 though it's tough to argue it has appeal.

They were definitely very good, I remember Chai looking really cool, I forgot about the marketing for the faces. The marketing also touted that Ryo had a love for billiards, when in reality you have literally one shot to sink a ball in the entire game.

Thinking about it, they should just make the game episodic, it's almost setup perfectly for that as it is
