Bards Tale IV on Kickstarter

Pretty good deal going on right now.

Pledge in the first 24 hours of the Kickstarter, and you get Wasteland 2, Witcher or Witcher 2 for free:

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects...-bards-tale-iv

From the creators of Wasteland 2 and Torment: Tides of Numenera comes The Bard’s Tale IV. Thirty years ago, The Bard’s Tale put Brian Fargo and Interplay on the map and launched a storied career crafting some of the most beloved cRPGs in gaming history.

Today, we return to Skara Brae for the long-awaited dungeon-crawling sequel to the Bard’s Tale trilogy -- the games that helped define the genre.

A single-player, party-based dungeon crawl, rich in exploration and combat
Dungeons filled not just with dangerous fights but with challenging puzzles and devious riddles
Dynamic phase-based combat, where the pace of battle is animated and fluid, but still gives you time to think and respond to your enemies
A game set to beautiful Gaelic music, where the Bard’s songs and melodies affect gameplay
Co-funded by fans and inXile: if this game hits its $1.25 million goal, inXile will put in at least $1.25 million of its own money to double the initial budget!
Built using Unreal Engine 4, for PC, Mac and Linux. Available from Steam or DRM-Free from GOG.com
Available in English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, and Polish
Built for and with the help of our fans. Your feedback and input directly impact the design and features of the game during alpha and beta stages
inXile Entertainment is proud to announce an unprecedented crowdfunding offer: anyone who backs The Bard’s Tale IV on Kickstarter in the first 24 hours of the campaign will receive a FREE copy of inXile’s Wasteland 2, or CD Projekt Red's The Witcher, or The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings. (until 6/3 at 6am, PST)

For all backers of The Bard’s Tale IV at the $20 Reward Tier and above. Wasteland 2 will be delivered on Steam or DRM-Free on GOG.com after the Kickstarter campaign. The Witcher and The Witcher 2 will be delivered on GOG.com.

That is a very good deal at $20. I wanted to pick up Wastelands 2 anyway. Thanks for the heads-up!

Shoot, I'd be all in if I didn't already own those three bonus games.

Very cool. Unfortunately this falls into the category of "man I used to love this game/genre but can't get into it anymore."

The early-bonus game offer has been extended for another 24 hours for anyone who missed out yesterday.

That does look amazing... especially for what this is. I'll believe all that makes the final game when I see it released

Re: Bards Tale IV on Kickstarter

So it's a first person game now? Or is that just for that demo?

Re: Bards Tale IV on Kickstarter

Okay, good. It'd be weird if it now plays like an Elder Scrolls game.

Re: Bards Tale IV on Kickstarter

Bard's Tale is before my PC gaming time, so I'll probably wait until release rather than pledging.

Is that the Unity 5 engine? I've heard is a huge improvement over 4 tech wise, but I haven't seen anything with it yet. Impressive if it is.

Edit: looks like they're using Unreal Engine 4.

Bard's Tale was always a first person game. They've said this will be first-person as well, though it will shift out of first-person for combat. Combat will be phase-based (basically, there's a player attack phase, and then a montser attack phase), so that will feel very different from Eleder Scrolls.

Re: Bards Tale IV on Kickstarter

What was the Bard's Tale I played on the Xbox a decade ago? I thought that played like a Diablo sort of game in isometric third-person view (though admittedly that was a LONG time ago).

We do not speak of that game.

The original Bard's Tale series came out in 1985, 1986, and 1988. They were first person and party-based.

In 2004, they came out with a new Bard's Tale (that's what you played), but it had nothing to do with the original three games. So much so that this Kickstarter is Bard's Tale 4, not Bard's Tale 5.

Honestly, I never played it so I can't judge. I know it's got a bad reputation amongst fans of the original series, but I think that's got more to do with it being a departure from the original series than its value as a game in and of itself. If you're going to take a franchise people know and change it around, you'd better do something awesome with it (Fallout 3).

I got confused there for a second too.

The Bard's Tale from 2004 has nothing to do with the original The Bard's Tale franchise. It isn't a remake, it isn't a reboot, it just has the same name.

Oh, well damn! That explains things then. I always figured it was related to the original games.
