The "Rules"

What is This Thing?

Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to watch 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List.

As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior (possibly sooner!) to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc.

The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 35 to 60. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access.

The date for list completion is November 15.

The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!

What Counts?

If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllMovie are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status.
Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB.
Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised.
Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.

Feature FilmsCounts as 1 entry
Short FilmsAdd them up to total 90 minutes to get 1 entry
Television ShowsAdd them up to 120 minutes (including commercials) to get 1 entry

Movies = 1 entry (despite running time)

TV shows count according to length as they're aired on TV (including commercials):

30 minute shows = ¼ an entry
1 hour shows = ½ an entry
90 minute shows = ¾ an entry
2 hour shows = 1 entry

Mini-Series = 1 entry for each day it aired

Commentaries count. (no restrictions)

Documentaries count.

A SLIGHTLY MORE COMPLICATED EXPLANATION:
Spoiler:

Concerning TV shows and shorts films:

Like the other challenges, you need four 30 minute shows for 1 entry and two hour-long shows for 1 entry. 30 minute shows typically run roughly 22 - 24 minutes without commercials and hour-long shows are roughly 43 - 45 minutes. If it's short films that are 10 minutes or less, once you hit around 23 minutes of watching them, you've reached one 30 minute show (¼ an entry). Any combination that gets you to 90 minutes can be used for 1 entry. And this is not an exact science, so if you're off by a little it's really no big deal.

When listing the TV shows try to keep them together in 1 entry.
(Example: 30 min show/30 min show/30 min show/30 min show)

For the sake of organization, it's advised that you keep a Temporary TV section at the bottom of your list until you get enough for an entry.

Why 90 minutes? To keep the continuity going with the other challenges.

Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.

The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Amazon Fire TV, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with obnoxious on-screen graphics and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
Row #6 - Proud to be unoccupied since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list:

- First time viewings. The thing is a commonly used symbol.
- Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.)
- Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.

Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously.

OPTIONAL
THEME NIGHTS
31 FILM SUBSET
THE CHECKLIST
3 WILD CARDS
This adds daily "themes" with accompanying links to horror sub-genres, studios, actors, directors and even a group marathon with the intention of watching said content on the designated day. This year's list is HERE.
Watch these 31 films on the listed day, with group discussion starting the next morning or at your own leisure. Feel free to join the discussion regardless of whether or not you watch them.

Also, the threads from the 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013 Subset Lists and even the old HFC List can be used for individual discussion if desired. This year's list is HERE
.
Complete it and feel a sense of accomplishment. The Expanded Checklist is HERE.

***Please include within spoiler tags to keep the list thread from running a mile long.***
Use for titles that lie outside the horror genre and normally wouldn't qualify or for those questionable titles you're not 100% certain about. They can also be used to count titles that aren't intended to be included as a full entry (I.E. a leftover 30-minute TV episode or short film). You have 3 so use them wisely.

For every 100 movies watched, you earn 1 extra wild card.
SEE POST 2 OR THE LIST THREAD FOR MORE DETAILS.

A friendly reminder:

If you are holding on to horror/halloween stuff to sell on the ebay, now would be the time to list it.

Wow, I wouldn't have thought about that, but I've been looking at horror stuff on ebay, amazon, and other sites - something I never do the rest of the year.

Over the weekend, I watched Van Helsing, a film that I like a lot more than I should. It's a bloated, nonsensical, and aggressively ugly film. This is clearer when you've recently watched actual Universal monster movies. They tell an emotional, poignant story in approximately 70 minutes. Even though it's over two hours long, the Sommers film has not real tension, no emotion, and no poignancy. Yet, I still enjoy it quite a bit. I don't know why!!!

If you've got 73 minutes to kill, here's the most nonsensical french arthouse horror flick with a mutant (zombie?) that resembles Peter Boyle in nazi attire, a demonic cat, an old man with a magical shotgun that never runs low on ammo who's intent on killing the world's most obnoxious horse, a mummy that's there for no apparent reason, and loads of other wtf goodness:

Ah, I've seen that, it's pretty cool but not something I'd personally want to do. A slipcover of sorts would be great. Hell, I've been on the look out for a properly sized sticker of just the logo of the Friday The 13th title to put on the spine of the tin.

I asked this in another thread but might as well ask here, too. Any opinions on The Final Terror or Without Warning?

Also, in case some of you haven't listened to any of the Universal Monsters audio commentaries, I would heartily recommend them. There is some great information in them. I've listened to the ones for The Wolf Man and Frankenstein. I'm probably the most impressed at how much the individual speaks in them. There really isn't any break of pause to speak of. Very good stuff.

In the last week, I've watched three Body Snatcher films. I watched the original for the first time. It was great, and I was pleasantly surprised by The Body Snatchers (the one from the '90s). I thought the setting of a military base lended some extra tension. All that being said, I have to give the overall edge to the 1978 version. Great cast, effects and cinematography, it just seemed to bring together all the elements the best. I especially loved revisiting that film because I recently had a trip to San Francisco. I'm planning on watching The Invasion this month, too, but I'm not expecting much based on everything I've heard about it.

I watched Without Warning last week. It's an obviously low budget film but atmospheric for what it is with a villain that has a cool weapon while also being really generic. I enjoyed it despite it's flaws, it's not top tier but worth a watch in my opinion... Without Warning reminded me of cold era science fiction with it's paranoia entering a more gory 80s cheese phase. It's slower than you'd expect from the promotional material. If you're a fan of Predator there's some extra value in seeing the influences that predate it in Without Warning.

They're both okay. Nothing amazing but entertaining enough.

Did I miss something, or is The Phantom Carriage basically A Christmas Carol set a week later...? And another not-really-a-"horror"-film.

Oh, I found another oddly-justified film listed somewhere relatively sane as horror: Fantastic Voyage. Why? Also, also, the third-ish season of Super Friends (Challenge of the, but not)........... is crazy. I can only imagine the writers/artists wanted to offset the "first half" repetitive cycle of Friends vs Doom by having thr "second half" pay homage to genre films. Rodan/Rokan, "Battle at the Earth's Core", "Sinbad and the Space Pirates", "Pied Piper from Space"... and now "Attack of the Vampire" and giant radioactive insects, a la Them! and Tarantula. Weird! I wonder if Mark Evanier would know the backstory to this...

Took a break from the Challenge to watch Steel. It was horrifying enough to watch it, can I count it as a wild card? lol, j/k.

I consider Phantom Carriage horror by virtue of it's focus on death and era where horror seemed less literal. It's a little harder hitting than A Christmas Carol feeling more existential; plus really cool phantom effect.

Without Warning is an extremely low budget film, and quite slow for most people. Yet, i find it entertaining, since I like the characters and it has lots of atmosphere, and a few well done scare sequences. So I'd recommend checking it out sometime, though don't except a fast paced scarefest like the trailer implies or you'll be disappointed.

Tonight I watched The Funhouse for the first time. I've never seen the entire film before, and thought it was about time I view the entire thing. It's not a bad movie, but nothing I'd really watch again or that often. So I don't see myself upgrading this to Blu-Ray and am glad I held off on that purchase It has it's moments, but really is slow in terms of the films almost over before it gets to the 'main' plot scenario, and it never really picks up steam then. It just kind of lingers and moves at the same snail pace.

Their is some nice camera work in the film though, and this one long crane shot was quite well done. Also the use of audio was effective, and some scenes were a bit tense. But overall, it just didn't do it for me.

One aspect that did catch my eye was
Spoiler:
The final girl got naked, lost her virginity(it's implied), smoked pot and survived! That's refreshing since I never bought the 'sex=death' supposed 'morality' spin people read into slashers. It's just an easy way for filmmakers to exploit T&A and also get characters away from the pack in order to get killed off. But it's not a 'rule' or anything like people claim, and thus you're not required to kill off those who have sex and so forth in a film/story.

Unless the plot is explicitly about 'morality' and the killer is killing the victims because they had sex and so forth. Their is no 'meaning' to the sex and death in slasher films, and the characters are not being 'punished' for having sex. I think it's just critics and some viewers reading too much into the films in my opinion.

I just rewatched Demons and I let the credits run and realised I've never seen the bit at the end! That'll teach me for getting impatient and turning off films as soon as the credits start. And what a great film [and ending]. Needed a bit of a boost at this point in the challenge.

I watched the Devil's Possessed last night.

Which though being on a Mill Creek 50 pack of "Pure Terror", and being Paul Naschy....really wasn't horror. Blech. I'm behind so I'm counting it for myself anyway....but I don't feel good about that!

If I get around to opening my Pure Terror set, I'll have to remember to skip past that one. It's like Black Dragons, and Swamp Women being on the 50 Horror Classics set.
