Unreal Tournament 'Comeback' ..blast from past?
Interesting....my favorite PC game of all time back in the early days. Like to see this come back using modern hardware; it looked good back then. I still have the old PC game and the 360 version that came out about 5-6 years ago.
Epic VP Teases Unreal Tournament 'Comeback'
More on the future of the classic FPS next Thursday.
A tweet from Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder of Epic Games, reads: "I love #UnrealTournament - So excited for the comeback! More next week!" Rein confirmed the news again, saying "Yes UT coming back!" when a fan asked for clarification.

YES(well, unless they F it up)!!!
Hands down this was my favorite online MP shooter!! Just something about it, I even made a bunch of cool levels (including the Death Star hanger-complete with Millennium Falcon).

There's only two ways this is going to work:
1. It's an HD remake of the original game.
- OR -
2. It's free-to-play or the game is super cheap. I don't know if a subscription service like what we've already seen with Quake Live would work.
I hold a soft spot for the original UT as I played the ever-loving shit out of that game as a teenager. Never cared for UT 2003/2004 and I thought UT3 sucked.

I was always more of a Quake fan, but I played a bit of the original Unreal Tournament and a bit of 2004 and they were always pretty fun.
I always wondered if this would make a comeback, especially since multiplayer FPS games are so popular now and UT and Quake 3 seemed ahead of their time. I see no reason why this wouldn't be moderately successful if it does come back.

With Titanfall's success and it being the first FPS in years that resembles twitch gameplay (the last major FPS I can recall that required the user to have quick reflexes and think on the fly would be Team Fortress 2), this is probably the best time for an Unreal Tournament reboot/sequel.

This is THE UT....
....just a blast but I did have fun with the 360 version of all the different vehicles in the game.

It's hard to believe that game came out in 1999. That and Quake basically propelled PC gaming...Doom, half Life among a few others. I looked at the wiki and the "spec requirements" made me laugh and new gamers really don't appreciate just how great they have it....
Windows 95 of Higher
Intel Pentium 200MHz min or Pentium II 266MHz recommended
Memory - 32mb min and 64mb recommended
120mb of free space - 605mb free space recommended
*Internet Connection required for MP...that be a 56K for us UT vets
Even the AI Bot matches were fun but it was the "voice packs" that were a hoot....

My first computer was rocking Windows 98, 300 MHz Pentium II processor, 128MB of RAM, 10GB hard drive, and a 56K modem.
Unreal Tournament ran like a beast on that bitch.

That's why I mentioned UT and Quake felt ahead of their time back then, given how multiplayer gaming has soared. Both seemed to take a risky approach making online only shooters before it really took off with CoD these days. I really want to see both franchises come back strong.

it just kills me....laughing and shaking head...when I hear especially console players complain about the smallest details in games today or the console doesn't have this or that or cannot do this or that.
Quake and UT ruled long before COD, BF4, Halo and even Gears became really big. The Unreal Engine (1 by the way) helped propel UT just like UT made the gaming world take notice of the Unreal Engine. And Quake was no slouch either. UT back then looked and played great...just look at all the review scores back then. I cannot imagine what a new UT would look like with the newer Unreal 4 Engine running on current hardware be it PC, PS4 or XO. Hopefully some good news tomorrow.

Well it went badly with the immediate follow ups. UT 2004? i think was half decent, but it really got back to excellence with UT3.
I still play UT and UT3 to this day. I once worked for a computer firm where almost every day we would have a couple of hours playing massive LAN fights.
The original UT might very well be the best game ever for replay value.

I think UT's problem is it lost its identity along the way. The first game was cool and unique at the time, but it's been the template for so many space-themed shooters over the years that there is nothing at all to differentiate it. That and the level design started moving away from the vast space levels to generic regular maps.
I don't think I'd pay full price for another online-only fps, I still feel like I got burned by buying Titanfall at that ($48). It was cool when all I did was game online, but my interest has definitely waned a bit, I'd like to have a strong single player to go with it -- though that's something Unreal never really was.

Basically, the code was starting to be written today. Free to play. Look for it sometime in 2018 or beyond for Master Race only.

Not "free to play", but... just plain old FREE. I'm sure that's what you meant, but wanted to clarify. This isn't Killer Instinct.
It's actually a cool concept, letting the devs work directly with fans to build the game together.

Glad to see it getting released on PC, Mac, and Linux. Fuck 1080p/60, I can't wait to play Facing Worlds in 1560p/120!
