presents

The Fifth Annual May Make-Your-Own Challenge
May 1-31, 2014

The list thread is now active.

May is just over a week away, so it's time, once again, to take a look at your dusty, unopened box sets, your unwatched stacks of Blu-rays, DVDs, HD-DVDs, LDs, VHS or Beta tapes, your DVR, your Netflix queue, etc., and decide what you should spend 31 days watching. Now's your chance to finally watch all the stuff that didn't fit, or that you just didn't get around to, during the other Challenges.

You choose your own Challenge theme and you make the rules.

There are however a few guidelines which everyone should follow.

Challenge Guidelines:

The Challenge runs from May 1 through May 31.

Sure, you can run your May MYOC in September if you want, but the list thread will only be stickied during May, so if you want anyone else to see what you're up to, please try to do it near those dates.

Please state your challenge theme and your challenge goal and rules (if any) at the top of your list(s) in the list thread so others can tell what you're doing.

Please don't duplicate an existing "Official" DVD Talk Challenge.

This guideline is mainly here so we don't subtract from participation in any of the other Challenges, and to encourage participants to focus on genres not already covered by a Challenge, but since everyone's "need to watch" list is different, and you're able to watch stuff that qualifies for one or more of the other Challenges during every other Challenge, you're free to narrow the focus of one of the broader "Official" Challenges.

For example; Say you only collect horror, then you could make your Challenge to watch just horror films, or just horror TV shows, or just zombie films, etc. Or if you have lots of unwatched Sci-Fi, then your MYOC could be just watch Sci-Fi movies, or watch Star Trek shows, or watch TOS, etc.

Here's Trevor's handy-dandy list of Challenges from his "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium thread:

Since we already have Monthly "Unwatched Movie Pile" Threads, please do not use "Unwatched Movie Pile" as a theme.

During past MYOCs, people weren't happy with this being used as a theme, and I tend to agree that it is a little lazy. So how about giving a little thought to the theme and coming up with something a little more creative, please?

HOW TO WIN
On June 1st, three winners will be randomly chosen from the Challenge participants (using Random.org). In keeping with the spirit of the Make-Your-Own Challenge, those three winners will pick their own prizes from HamiltonBook.com.

Prize selection will be limited to items priced $20 or less.

You must have a US mailing address to receive a prize.

Any unclaimed prize opportunities will be re-gifted on June 4.

I will announce the prizes chosen so we can all be envious and/or amused by the selections.

I'm thinking of doing a "Comic Book Movie & TV Challenge," but I might just continue on with Something Weird DVDs, continuing my Drive-In Challenge, since I haven't watched as much as I have wanted.

Been waiting for this thread with baited breath. I'm thinking of a combination of Star Trek/Documentaries/Animal Shows.

I loved my theme last year. I'm having trouble coming up with something creative this time. This thread will push me to start thinking harder. It really should be all the crap I needlessly bought in April for the drive-in challenge and didn't even watch even though I had way more than enough that I owned already, but it's a little wordy!

Normally, I like to be pretty creative with the MYOC. This year, I've given serious thought to "cutting the cord" with the goal being to do so by mid-June. This means I've got to clear out the DVR. So that may be my focus, despite it being a fairly lame approach. Guess I have a little over a week to change my mind.

I'm being lazy and don't want to think to hard so I am just going to do a icheckmovies challenge. Anything on an official list can be watched.

Cutting the cord? Do you have a streaming tv box then?

No. I've considered it, though I'm not in a hurry for it. I've got so much unwatched material, I think I can survive. Have looked into getting a quality HD antenna to see what channels I could pull in.

You could tie things together by name-checking the Star Trek episode "The Menagerie" in which humans are kept in cages like animals and observed by an alien species!

I was thinking of focusing on films and television shows that feature kids and teenagers. I've got a lot of Gossip Girl, The O.C., and One Tree Hill seasons to get through.

I'm in but I don't know what I'll be doing yet. I can't decide between movies from poverty row studios, Japanese TV and films or catching up on all the special features I've ignored during the B-movie challenge. And now, I also like Dimension X's idea of Something Weird DVDs since I also haven't watched nearly as many as I would have liked in the current challenge.

I'm considering revisiting my "Serials" theme or possibly a repeat of last year's "Life of P.I. (Private Investigators)." I have enough of either to easily make a month of nothing but viewings out of the unopened pile.

I also keep going back to a "Bob Hope Appreciation" month theme. There are enough films in which he appeared to keep me busy while leaving time for just random stuff from the unwatched pile... Hmmm...

The more I think about it the more I think that's the theme I'm going with. I can watch most (if not all) the comic book stuff I wanted to watch during the Sci-Fi and Animation challenges, and I still have lots of SWV stuff that I've only watched once before (plus commentaries) to watch. I didn't feel like watching 100 films this month anyway, so it'll be more enjoyable to me to stretch it out into May.

I was going to start re-watching The X-Files this summer. For this challenge I wanted to do women fighting crime and watch The Closer & Veronica Mars before I delve into X-Files but I might reconsider.

I was thinking of doing a Black Friday Buys Challenge.

Edit: And now that I look at those, seems like half of them I want to save for the Sci-Fi & Horror Challenges....

After thinking about it, I decided to replace Star Trek with sports and leave the other two in tact for a few reasons. One, I can watch Star Trek for the Sci Fi/Fantasy challenge, two, I've been watching a lot of documentaries and sports this month anyways and am far from tired of it, and three, afaik, there is no challenge that lets you watch sports anyways. And for sports, I am including all sports, even outdoor sports like hunting and fishing.

I'm thinking about doing a Musicals Challenge. I like musicals, but when I took one of those "How Many Musicals Have You Seen?" quizzes, I found my score to be lacking. I figure this is a good way for me to focus on watching more of them.

I'm gearing up for this challenge with purchases and planned purchases already. Bought a used copy of Season 1 of Meerkat Manor from Amazon this morning, and saving up points toward an Amazon guft card that I plan to use to purchase a couple BBC nature documentary sets to add to the collection I already have, plus I had some money in my paypal balance, and used some of it to order as Buy it Now, North America, the Tom Selleck version, as I couldn't find any David Attenborough version of that, and the Blu Ray of Galapagos off of Ebay.

my challenge is going to be all of "supplements features/material" - since the only challenges that allow this are the Action and Criterion challenges.

Good approach.

I've considered this before and will likely give this one a shot in the next year or 2.

I just watched a Hong Kong musical, SWEET AND WILD (1966), for the B Movie Challenge. It was produced by Shaw Bros., so it was on the safe list and I wanted to watch something nonviolent for Easter. I've seen many Hollywood musicals, but fewer from other countries, although the influx of subtitled Shaw Bros. movies on R3 DVD in the 2000s has allowed me to see many of Shaw's 1960s HK musicals. Japanese musicals are a tougher nut to crack. I have several, including a few from the 1950s, but none are subtitled.

Always glad to see a new challenger joining in. Hope you have fun.

I've done commentary challenges the last two years, and I plan on listening to at least a few this time.

Looking at your Drive-In Challenge list, when did you have time to watch that even once? I've decided to stick with SWV DVDs for May, so I can listen to a few Dave Friedman commentaries.

Heh. Back at a time when I could get in about 2/3 movies a day. I got this whole week off which gives me a chance to surpass 5.

And it's now official. Go ahead & mark me down for a comic/superhero challenge. There's lots of stuff I got that I really want to re-visit.
