Re: Rank'em as You Hear Them [2014 Edition]

12/26 Edit: Finally updated!
Weird year for me. As is typical for me, I listened to a fair amount of metal, but very little of it really resonated with me. Only two "metal" albums on my top 10 list (and Mastodon is getting close to that line) which has to be a record low for me. I'm pretty sure that doesn't mean I'm growing up, but who the hell knows. Both Hozier, and The War on Drugs were easy choices for my top two, and I actually just discovered WoD this month, so it might surplant Hozier as I give it more listens. I saw Hozier on SNL and had bought the album before the episode ended. That album could have been written for me. Just about perfect. Emma Ruth Rundle's second solo album was my early choice for album of the year, and it's a shame more people haven't heard it. Brilliantly produced, acoustic stuff, that will haunt you from the first listen.

I've still got a few 2014 albums on my to-listen list that I haven't heard yet, and I think Cloudkicker and Thomas Giles might crack my top-10, but we'll have to see.

Album Rankings

1) Hozier - Hozier
2) The War on Drugs - Lost in the Dream

3) Emma Ruth Rundle - Some Heavy Ocean -- Seriously, more people need to listen to this one. If you aren't hooked by song 3, there's no hope.
4) Taylor Swift - 1989 -- This is not ironic. I love T-Swift more than any 38-year old has any right to. Don't care.
5) He Is Legend - Heavy Fruit -- Stoner metal genius, and so much fun. Great driving music

6) Lissie - Crying to You EP -- It's covers, but it introduced me to Lissie, and I really love it.
7) Mastodon - Once More Round the Sun -- Years biggest surprise for me. It feels simpler (and almost poppy at times!) than their recent stuff, but that's a good thing.
8) First Aid Kit - Stay Gold -- Damn these Swedes can sing
9) Alpha Male Tea Party - Droids -- Math-rock fun in the vein of And So I Watch You From Afar.
10) Jakob - Sines -- Post-rock legends first new album in 10 years is worth the wait.
