What's the most popular super hero introduced in the last 25 years?

OK, slightly different question brought about by all the discussion in a few other threads.

I'm thinking Spawn, Gambit, Cable or Deadpool. Tim Drake is pretty popular, but he had the benefit of being Robin, who's not a new character. Same with Kyle Rayner and Green Lantern.

Other than those you mentioned I can't really think of one that really stands out. Also, if you ask someone who doesn't read comics I doubt those names are recognizable at all except Robin. Maybe Spawn because he had that one movie and Deadpool if they ever make a movie.

I can't really think of anyone other than Gambit, Cable, and Deadpool either. Ironic two of the three were Liefeld creations.

Conner Kent maybe counts. Sure he is Superboy, but he is drastically different from the old Superboy.

Booster Gold just barely doesn't meet the cutoff. He was introduced in 1986 which was 27 years old. Booster Gold is popular with comic readers although non-comic readers wouldn't have the slightest clue who he is.

DC from 1986 up until about 1994 is my favorite era of comics.

I remember liking the Liberty Legion as the homefront version of The Invaders.

I loved Liberty Girl from Heroic Publishing until they dropped the ball with their scheduling a few years back.

I think it's Deadpool. Fox was all geared up to do a Deadpool solo movie until that Wolverine movie turned out so-so.

Re: What's the most popular super hero introduced in the last 25 years?

Not a superhero (well, except in the late 90s), and technically the symbiote was introduced in Secret Wars, but Venom makes the cut, I think (if we're not taking months into consideration).

Is Gambit really that popular anymore? He seemed to get lost in the shuffle around the time he and Rogue broke up for the nth time.

Also not technically a superhero, but Hellboy has to be up there.

I don't think Invincible has enough exposure. Danny Ketch/Ghostrider probably falls into the "took an old monicker" bucket, but I'd argue he was far more popular in his heyday than Johnny Blaze was. Like Gambit, though, he's fallen on hard times...

I wouldn't necessarily call Jubilee popular, but she did get a lot of exposure in the X-men cartoon.

Ninja Turtles. Started in comics & have one today. Most of popularity is tv/toys but they were still started in comics.

TMNT was created in 1984 though, so they don't meet the 25 year cutoff.

Re: What's the most popular super hero introduced in the last 25 years?

The Tick just meets the deadline if you count from initial comic publication date. The Endless, mostly Dream and Death, have to be up there as well. A few others are just outside the deadline, like Constantine.

This is a sad thread as it shows the lack of compelling new characters in the last few decades, at least those that have reached any popular acceptance.

There are a lot of popular characters created in the last 25 years, its just that 99% of them are legacy characters which the OP disqualified.

Kyle Rayner
Connor Hawke
Conner Kent
Bart Allen
Tim Drake
Damian Wayne
Cassandra Cain
Stephanie Brown

Actually, Stephanie isn't really a legacy character since she is known more for being Spoiler than Batgirl. She has a very outspoken fanbase that is angered about her erased in the New 52, so I would say she is quite popular in comics, but she is completely unknown outside comics.

Re: What's the most popular super hero introduced in the last 25 years?

An outspoken fanbase doesn't necessarily mean a large fanbase, though. And I loved the pre new-52 Batgirl, but that's one title where sales are way, way higher with Barbara back.

But if most of the viable new characters are basically taking up the mantle from someone else, than yeah, it is sad, but again, comic book readers are resistant to change. Even characters like the Authority are basically skewed versions of iconic characters for the most part.

Understandably (kinda) when they rebooted with the new 52, they had to get rid of a bunch of legacy characters to deage most of the superheroes. It's just that various writers had done such a good job developing the Kid/sidekick characters, two generations worth of them (sometime more), so it was disheartening to see them wiped out like that. But James Robinson tried doing a Justice League with the Teen Titans taking up the mantle, and it basically failed... there were a lot of reasons why, but part of it was that readers wanted the original big guns.

Does Kick-Ass & Hit-Girl count? Hellboy got popular too. I think Deadpool is probably on the top of the list. Venom is exactly at 25 years.
