The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

The wii thread has been dead since September, and Wii U is days away, so here's a new thread for all y'all.

I'm looking forward to some impressions, I believe I am sitting this round out (for a few months at the very least.)

Here's a question that somebody may know the answer to...like many of you, I pre-ordered this thing from Best Buy Online for in-store pickup. If my local store is doing a midnight release, can I get it then? Or do I need to wait for normal operating hours?

I think it depends on when they send you the email that says you can pick it up. Though for the last few things I've ordered for in-store pickup, I haven't needed the email so YMMV.

Naw, but I have no interest in a 3DS or Vita, and this has a resistive screen tablet. Plus I really want to play it.

That's a solid C, maybe C+ on a curve. Pretty good for a collection of "tech demos", in my book.

Agreed. I expected less than 7s and 8s after the early impressions at E3.

Oh, Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate is coming to Wii U. Was wondering what their killer app for Japan would be. Answer: An upscaled Monster Hunter with blurry textures.

Got a shipping notice for NSMBU from WalMart. No luck on the system yet. It's still processing. Expected delivery: Nov. 21-26.

I have my system preordered from GS with overnight shipping and I haven't seen any movement. I placed it as soon as the preorders went live.

So can someone tell me, or point me to a source that explains how to transfer Virtual Console stuff from my Wii to the U?

And please don't say "it's the same as transferring from the DSi to the 3DS", since I've never had either.

You have to have both systems hooked up to the network at the same time and use a SD card to go from one to the other.

Both on the network yet use an SD card for the transfer? Can't just copy them over the network? Only Nintendo, only Nintendo.

Yeah, it's pretty convoluted. I'll have to go through that process to copy over exactly 1 game save. I only bought my Wii to play Xenoblade and I haven't finished it.

Well, all my VC games are already on an SD card in my Wii, so I guess (hope) it'll just be a matter of pulling it out of the Wii and sticking it into the U. (god, this all sounds so sexual...)

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Here is a list of Wii U game reviews from ONM. It is a pretty solid list of scores for a launch, and this is only some of them. The review for ZombiU is great news, and hopefully it is a predictor for other scores to come!

NSMBU (WiiU) - 86

TTT2: WiiU Edition (WiiU) - 88

FIFA 13 (WiiU) - 80

ZombiU (WiiU) - 92

Epic Mickey: The Power of 2 (WiiU) - 80

Nintendoland (WiiU) - 90

I'm pretty pissed that the Game Stop where I have my Wii U and ZombiU preordered and paid off at isn't doing a midnight launch, although very few are. At least I'll be able to get started on Sunday. I will digitally download NSMBU once I get it all set up.

I also hate the news that it has been confirmed that TVii has been delayed until some point in December.

Well, if you consider that the average for Nintendoland from non-ONM sources was mid-70s, then I think you should have a pretty good gauge on the grain of salt you can take with these.

IGN gave Nintendoland an 8.7. http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/11/...do-land-review

Seems like it's a relative review. Considering it's essentially a tech demo, I think, you have to grade it as such. And if it's an awesome-ish tech demo, then that's good enough for me. Everyone LURVED Wii Sports but did that really hold your interest for very long?

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Uh huh, and I included their 87 in my average comment that I calculated last night. For a tech demo, it's probably closer to an 85 or 90 than 70, sure. But you can't then compare it to NSMBU or ZombiU's similar scores.

But you can compare it to the average of all the other publications and then wonder if Official "Nintendo" Magazine should be taken with a grain of salt. IGN was the outlier at 87% previously, but that seems less questionable to me since the source isn't ONM.
