What is This Thing? Since its inception in 2005 the goal of this challenge has been to reach 100 horror films in a month's time. Obviously that's not an attainable goal for everyone, so your personal goal is of your choosing. Whether it's achieved, surpassed or beyond your reach, the ultimate goal here is to enjoy yourself while conversing with fellow genre fans.
Creating a List. As always, there will be a separate list thread posted roughly 2 weeks prior to the October 1st start date. Be creative and personalize your list however you wish - give reviews, post pics, link to your blog or start one on your page, provide IMDB links with your titles, add YouTube videos, include running times, etc. The forum software now allows for unlimited post length, although you're still welcome to post it in a weekly or biweekly format. Also be aware the image limit has been raised from 25 to 35 since the last challenge. And it's not a bad idea to provide a link to the list in your signature for easier access. The only mandatory rule here is NUMBER YOUR LISTS!
What Counts? If you're uncertain of the title's genre classification the IMDB and AllRovi (formerly allmovie.com) are the go-to sources for determining its potential horror movie status. Need more confirmation? A third and fourth option exists and that is FlickChart (requires free sign up) and TMDB. Of course, any site is prone to the occasional error and if you feel that's the case asking in the discussion thread is advised. Just keep in mind that the #1 deciding factor regarding what counts is you and you alone.
Every facet of horror counts: Horror-comedies, Sci-Fi horror, wretchedly bad horror [INSERT CURRENT REMAKE HERE], kiddie horror, creature features, erotic / XXX horror, Masters of Horror, silents, made-for-TV movies, etc.
The formats and how you watch them is strictly your call -- Blu-ray, DVD, Netflix Watch Instantly, HD DVD, at the theater, on television, public domain downloads (links provided below), VHS, Laserdisc, Video On Demand, Netflix disc-by-mail, UMD, MiniDV, CED, Amazon Instant Video, through your neighbor's window, Roku, Nexus Q, Apple TV, a Boxee Box, Hulu, Youtube, Payperview, Betamax, via laptop, netbook, VCD, a smartphone, a tablet ...you name it. And yes, that even includes the pan & scan, edited-for-television movies that air on TBS with multiple pop-ups and commercial interruptions (NOT recommended!). Just make sure the film is viewed in it's entirety.
This row has remained empty since 2010!
You're welcome to include non-genre titles viewed during the month in your list, but please keep them separate from your qualifying entries and don't number them.
Sometime in November there will be a results thread posted. If you wish to be included in the stats provided (aside from your number ranking), please include the following in your list: - First time viewings. The ☼ thing is a commonly used symbol. - Formats viewed. (BD, DVD, NWI, etc.) - Your personal goal ...even if it happens to be the challenge's goal of 100.
Keep it civil. The intention here is to have fun, so please don't take this event started by a guy with just a little too much time on his hands that seriously. |

I'll be watching #40 tonight. A little more effort during the weekends might have seen me in the fifties or sixties. Even so I will still have managed to watch one a day all month long, assuming I don't miss tomorrow.

Before I forget...
Please be considering who you're gonna vote for regarding the "best list". You can start PMing or emailing me your entries anytime.
Try to have your personal list complete 1 week after the challenge ends.
If you wanna be included in the stats don't forget to include your first time viewings, formats viewed and your personal goal. Even equipment failures.
As usual, all the prizes will be announced once everything's tabulated and the results thread is up. Last year it went up 11/21, so it could take awhile. Hopefully not that long.
I'll post more as I remember.

Granted things could have turned out much worse given the circumstances, Sandy has really messed up my viewing habits.
I hope everyone stayed safe with limited damage. Best wishes.

Only two checklist items remain for me and I hope to clear them off later tonight. * Raine Brown, and X / NC-17 - which I hope to take care of in one swoop with 100 Tears. Very excited but I cannot believe we're coming up on the 31st. That's just crazy...especially when I've only left the couch for a few work days and groceries since September. This challenge has saved me money. I've enjoyed the hell out of it!
btw, Night Visitor is a ridiculous but fun little horror thriller that I just finished. The cast is at their cheesy best, especially Michael J. Pollard and Elliot Gould. It's about a satanic high school teacher who kidnaps and kills hookers, and a bunch of other silly shit. Funniest of all is that it plays out like an ABC Afterschool Special.

I've been home for the storm (no subway service in NYC, so no going to work), but I spent much of yesterday watching news coverage. It was hard to focus on watching stuff with high winds racing all around my building. But I made up for it today. Too tired to do anything else, too overdosed on storm coverage, so I watched stuff, including three anime horror titles. Still tons more I wanted to watch for this, but I only have a day left.

I know this is off topic but reading that Disney bought out LucasFilms for 4 billion dollars and announced a seventh Star Wars live action film for 2015 almost made me fall out of my seat; discussion here. That news pulls me out of the horror obsession a little; but now back to Curse of the Demon.

Ugh. Just when I thought I'd escape 1 challenge without an equipment failure my PS3 decides it doesn't want to eject the Blu-ray I put in it.

Are other cities postponing Trick or Treating until the weekend? Although we didn't get the worst of the storm, with days of rain and wind we pushed it to Saturday. It makes sense, but still seems somehow wrong - I have become used to watching the home stretch of the Challenge, and pausing to answer the door.

The DC area got off easy after yesterday's storm. We never lost power, and by and large the lamb's blood over the door posts and lintel caused Sandy to pass over our house. Our thoughts are with the folks in the greater NY/ NJ area who got hammered like Lindsay Lohan in a crack house.
Watched one of my favorite bad movies for today's theme: The Devil's Rain. It's such an incoherent film, despite being directed by the capable Robert Fuest, who made the two Phibes films. The cast is terrific: William Shatner, Ida Lupino, Tom Skerritt, Keenan Wynn, Eddie Albert, and the always awesome Ernest Borgnine as the demon Corbis, yet they were all eclipsed in the billing by a young extra in heavy makeup who has two lines: John Travolta, who had hit it big as a Sweathog in Welcome Back, Kotter, before the film's release. I remember seeing this at the Alhambra Theater (R.I.P.) in Hopkinsville, KY, with "STARRING JOHN TRAVOLTA" splashed across the marquee.
I've always wondered who sets the dress code for Satanic cults, and why they always choose to look so dowdy. Is there a CultsRUs store where you can buy cowled robes and pentagram necklaces? And why can't devil-worshipers wear pastels instead of gloomy black?
I don't know why studios remake films that were perfectly fine in their day, like Fright Night, when there are so many old movies with a good idea but crap execution like this that could use a remake with better writing.

Fans of Tony Todd should track down the modest but respectable zombie flick Voodoo Dawn, co-written by John Russo, in which Todd plays a machete-wielding voodoo priest opposite country wild chile Gina Gershon and a bunch of folks I didn't recognize, other than Raymond St. Jacques. It's better than its 2.5 IMDB rating, but certainly no underrated gem. Worth watching if it's ever on TV, since the only release is a German DVD.

Question, since you have a PS3 too, do you need trhe hdmi cable to get bd quality? OR can you still get blu ray quality with the AV Cables included?

Movie #40 was The Butterfly Murders, a dark and somewhat gruesome martial arts flick, Tsui Hark's first feature film. Not as gruesome as Ringo Lam's Burning Paradise (1994), though. He would follow it with the more straight forward cannibal horror/comedy, We're Going to Eat You (1980).

So I went to a ghost hunting thing last week and at one point one of those toy monkeys with cymbals started going off so in that spirits honor I'm watching monkey shine for the first time
