Rebuild of Evangelion
Hey guys
Anyone going to see this in the theaters? They're releasing 1.0 in the theaters in a limited fashion.

For me the nearest is probably London, Ontario. Anything else is like half a day away. There's some talk on the evafreaks forums that a theater in Chicago might show it if they get enough interest (that would be nice, it would avoid trying to track down a passport for Canada, stupid new laws).

I've seen Evangelion the series, but not any of the movies. This is showing at my local theater in August, so I'm wondering what exactly it is. Is this a movie, the first episode or what?

Exclusives for anime releases are far and few in between nowadays...and FWIW the 1.01 release does have a slipcover.
January solicitations has been out for a while now and it's not listed. It may not happen until later this year...

These movies are an alternate retelling of the series. The first movie (1.0) follows very closely to the series, while the second movie starting to move away from the series and into new territory. At least that's what I've heard.
The first movie, 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, and its various incarnations (the 1.01 extended cut, the 1.11 digital master cut, and the recent TV broadcast cut) covers the first 6 episodes of the TV series exactly. Some animation is taken from the TV series and touched up (moreso than for the Renewal/Platinum release of the TV series), other parts are modified, and still other parts are completely new (sometimes redone animation for existing events, sometimes completely new events). For example, the battle with the former third/current fourth angel is essentially the same as it appears in episode 2 of the TV series, while the battle with the former fifth/current sixth angel is essentially the same in terms of the things that happen, but is so much more completely awesome than its TV series counterpart. FUNimation is releasing the 1.01 cut later this year, and is releasing the 1.11 cut next year.
The second movie, 2.0: You Can (Not) Advance, covers up through the end of episode 19. Certain events from the TV series are revisited (and revised) amidst more new content. More new animation is added. A new character is added. Crazy things happen. The movie is as of yet unlicensed.

So the 1.11 cut is the same as the 1.01 cut but better visual quality?

I will be waiting for the BD release in the spring. I already saw this in the theater this summer.

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion
The film was given a retransfer to fix some darkness issues in the previous DVD release and roughly 3 minutes of new animation was added to the first 15 minutes of the original film.

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion
I just watched You are not Alone. Loved it and the changes they made were great for the flying fortress angel. There were also other changes that were interesting and one that is kind of a major change. Don't think I'll pick it up until 1.11 is released. It'll be interesting seeing how the next movie changes thing.

I just ordered a copy of the Blu-ray. Neon Genesis Evangelion is my all time favorite anime. I've bought the series three times, including once in a version without English dubs or subs. Getting it on Blu-ray in any form is a no-brainer.
