Lulu (Metallica & Lou Reed) New Album Discussion

A few months ago our own Kirk Hammett hinted at a new Metallica project that's "not really 100 percent a Metallica record." * While Kirk may have jumped the gun a little (and has since been properly punished with a series of push-ups!), we are more than proud to announce that we have just completed recording a full length album that is a collaboration with none other than the legendary Lou Reed.

Ever since we had the pleasure of performing with Lou at the 25th Anniversary of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Madison Square Garden in October of 2009, we have been kicking around the idea of making a record together. *Some of you astute Bay Area residents may have picked up news of recent Lou Reed sightings in the greater San Francisco area and we have indeed been working at our home studio at HQ on and off over the last few months. *In what would be lightning speed for a Metallica related project, we recorded ten songs during this time and while at this moment we're not exactly sure when you'll hear it, we're beyond excited to share with you that the recording sessions wrapped up last week.

A true innovator and easily one of the most influential songwriters, musicians, and performers in rock music history, Lou's work with the Velvet Underground and as a solo artist has such an enduring quality that he has long been revered and respected by us and many of our peers. *We can't wait for you to listen to the finished record, so as we like to hear ourselves say around here, keep watching this spot for updates . . . we'll be back with more details as they come together.

I'm excited by this. It's about time Lou Reed made another great album, it's been a while really...

Ecstasy was a great album. 11 years old. Wow.

I saw Lou on that tour and it had to be one of the loudest, most awesome shows I ever attended. The Metallica collaboration - meh. Could be OK if Lou retained control.

I'm interested to hear what this will sound like. I wish they'd at least released a short clip.

Me too. Not a Metallica fan but I'm intrigued.

Have to say, this is pretty cool follow-up to their "back to basics" album. Another one of the same would have been underwhelming and a return to their less classic sound would have been worse. Seems like a smart move to stretch on a project like this.

What an odd pairing. I missed the Madison Square Garden performance, not sure how this will turn out.

They did actually listen to Metal Machine Music before working with this guy, right?

Re: Metallica announces the finishing of new album...

http://www.billboard.com/#/news/rick...05242142.story

Metallica: Rubin, who was not involved with the headbangers' recent collaboration with Lou Reed, reports that the quartet is "about to start writing, and I had a meeting with Lars (Ulrich) in San Francisco...to explore what the focus was going to be this time around. I'm still sort of thinking about what that is going to be. I'll ask a lot of questions and we'll probably listen to some of the riffs that they've been writing. Usually I'll hear something that will sort of indicate the direction and then we'll talk about it from there."

Re: Metallica announces the finishing of new album...

I don't see how anyone can get excited about this after Death Magnetic.

At least in the 90's which everyone hates they had some good songs.

Re: Metallica announces the finishing of new album...

Considering they have only released 2 albums in almost 15 years, I can't see how anyone can feel motivated to debate the quality of those albums and whatever the new album may bring. For me though, Death Magnetic was a giant step in the right direction, considering how unlistenable St Anger was, but certainly their lack of output makes them irrelevant at this point.

Funny, I remember people being pretty excited with DM came out. But it really doesn't have any staying power, does it?

He's always been dreadful. He has awful tone, is incredibly sloppy... and coupled with his terrible vibrato and pitchy bends, it's hard to listen to him.

He's a really nice guy though.

I still really like DM. I'm about as unenthused about this project as I could be though.
