MS forced me to change my gamertag....

So I booted up my 360 and got a message that I had to change my gamertag due to xbox live rules or something.

Sh4mwowT4mpon

Is this gamertag really that offensive? Juvenile and a little immature, yes, but offensive? I just thought it was funny.

if the tag contained profanity or racial slurs...sure it should be changed. But is tampon really that offensive?

I couldn't believe it.

Not at your tag, but the fact you have to change it. I think the offensive part is using numbers in place of letters.

Good thing you didn't spell Banana with three "4"s.

it can't be the numbers. tons of people use the numbers in the tag. A woman's menstrual cycle evidently grosses out Microsoft.

Personally, I'm much more offended by Banana Luke...

Trying to make sense of it makes me want to stab my brain with a Q Tip. So maybe they changed it for user safety.

it is a weird gamertag too, the history with it goes back to one of the WWE games on the Gamecube. My friends and I had this "stable" of funny created wrestlers -- Banana Luke was the leader.

that is until he turned heel and became L.A. Luke.

This thread proves one thing, and one thing only. Humor is totally subjective and a very personal thing.

I wasn't offended by your gamertag... but I don't need to be reminded about T4mpons either.

Re: MS forced me to change my gamertag....

All it takes is one complaint filed against you and MS looks into it. I wouldn't say it's overly offensive, but then again it's more offensive than it is funny.

Point is, if one person found it offensive enough to report, than yeah, it's probably offensive. Why straddle that line to begin with? Just pick something normal.

Where is the fun in that?

I just don't see how anyone could be offended by shamwowtampon. it isn't like I called it bloody tampon or something.

I'm guessing you're not quite getting the response you hoped from this thread.

Re: MS forced me to change my gamertag....

Curious if you actually had to use the 4's because "Shamwowtampon" was already taken? Or did you replace the a's with 4's because you knew it was probably an unacceptable name and were trying to get past automatic filters?

i just did the 4's because that was just something i wanted to do. i honestly didn't think this would be a controversial name. like I said, i just thought is was funny (to me at least). i wasn't trying to beat the system

Well, there are young kids playing on live ... all it would take is for one parent to get a question from their little tyke "Mommy, what's a shamwowtampon?" for them to lodge a complaint. I'd probably file a complaint too. There are better ways to express your creativity.

I just set up an Urbandictionary page saying that a Banana Luke is "Peeling back the foreskin and then pretending to cut off someone else's hand with the 'saber'." Now I'm going to report the gamertag to MS.

Re: MS forced me to change my gamertag....

My account got "Temporarily Restricted" because I used the phrase "Poon Juice" as my description under my username.

I thought that was a bit excessive (especially since I had had that description for over 5 years). I don't turn on my X-box much anymore and didn't know this had happened until my friend called me one day and said my account was banned. I just had to log back on and remove it and then my account was back to normal.

I'm kind of curious as to what words are triggering the moderators to send out notices. "Tampon" doesn't seem that bad. If my username was P4ntyR4ider, I wonder if it would get flagged? Where's the line on "offensive"?

MS doesn't actively look for offenders. It's all based on the feedback system. It's not that "Poon Juice" slipped through the cracks for 5 years, it's that no gamer cared enough to report it. Once someone does, then they pull up your info and make a judgement call.

Then I assume all these words/phrases go into a database to prevent future accounts from even trying to use them.

So there is no "line" on offensive until someone reports it.

Using numbers in words should be an automatic ban.
