Synopsis:

Former cop Brian O'Conner partners with ex-con Dom Toretto on the opposite side of the law. Since Brian and Mia Toretto broke Dom out of custody, they've blown across many borders to elude authorities. Now backed into a corner in Rio de Janeiro, they must pull one last job in order to gain their freedom. As they assemble their elite team of top racers, the unlikely allies know their only shot of getting out for good means confronting the corrupt businessman who wants them dead. But he's not the only one on their tail. Hard-nosed federal agent Luke Hobbs never misses his target. When he is assigned to track down Dom and Brian, he and his strike team launch an all-out assault to capture them. But as his men tear through Brazil, Hobbs learns he can't separate the good guys from the bad. Now, he must rely on his instincts to corner his prey... before someone else runs them down first.

Re: Fast Five (Fast & Furious Five) -- The Reviews and Comments Thread -- Opens 4/29/

Saw it tonight at midnight. I'll keep my thoughts brief since this type of film really is 'critic proof' ...

-You know exactly what to expect if you're a fan of the series/have seen any of the other installments. This film delivers thrills, twists and action galore.
-I felt it was a little light on the car porn/racing this time around, the action was allot more gun fight centric imo, with a really fun over the top vehicle action set piece as the climax.
-It was fun to see the characters from the various sequels all tie together and the whole heist/ocean's 11 vibe was great
-Theres a surprise at the end of the credits, looks like we'll see a sixth outing..and the plot is going to get into soap opera territory.
-The Rock is barely in this (thank god, he was easily the weakest cast member)

All in all, leave your brain at the door..summer is here. Strong, loud, dumb action flick

This film was a great ride. It definitely rewards those audience members who stuck with the series up to this point. Paul Walker still can't act, but who cares when the movie is this much fun. I thought adding in Dwayne Johnson was a good idea. Can't wait for the next one, especially with where they left it.

Yeah a bit odd, I haven't seen this yet but in general Dwayne Johnson is better at this acting thing than anyone else in the cast. Not saying much, I admit. May just be a shitty character.

This movie is currently at 77% on RottenTomatoes with over 100 reviews.

Problem w/ the rest of those characters and actors...they lack screen presence and charisma.

He was hit and miss IMO, he was great in his action scenes, but when he tried to deliver one of his 'badass' one liners I cringed more often then not. I guess I'm just not a Rock fan. Don't get me wrong, thats not a huge negative, overall I really dug this flick.

Re: Fast Five (Fast & Furious Five) -- The Reviews and Comments Thread -- Opens 4/29/

I don't know if they just sunk more money into computer effects or went back to a lot more practical (I'm thinking that is what they did) but the action in this was 10X better than Fast & Furious where it all felt like a videogame and had NO STAKES. Most of these sequences feel DANGEROUS and REAL, like the first film. Sure the scene with the vault is over the top, but it was badass, same with the train sequence. The plot of was dumb as shit and after the great opening to until it becomes "Ocean's Eleven", I was pretty bored, but from there on out it was nothing but FUN. The Rock was underused and there was the signature HORRIBLE dialogue, but I had a blast and will be seeing it again - and am definitely there for the promised sequel.

also, the fact that Perd Hapley from Parks and Rec was a newscaster at the beginning was awesome.

This movie is set to hit $30 - $35m today for a $75 - $80m weekend.

http://www.deadline.com/2011/04/box-office/

Finke thinks it could hit $500m worldwide once all is said and done (full run), that would be huge for Universal.

Re: Fast Five (Fast & Furious Five) -- The Reviews and Comments Thread -- Opens 4/29/

I love seeing films at midnight and then having to be at work by 8am.

Praise Justin Lin for trying to use the least amount of CGI possible and try to do all of the action and stunts in camera. Granted, there's a few CGI moments that look awful (Diesel and Walker driving the car right off the cliff). However, on a whole, the action is this entry is the most impressive yet especially that heist sequence. The whole audience was applauding, cheering, gasping and laughing just by the sheer awesomeness of the whole set piece.

[Remember to stay after the credits. Only 30% of the theater remained for the post-credits moment, but the remaining crowd lost their collective shit when the surprise happened.]

... and on that note, Fast Five is the best entry into the franchise to date (topping my personal favorite 2 Fast 2 Furious). I had a fuckin' blast last night and it was great to see a sequel in the franchise acknowledge the bastard step child that was 2 Fast 2 Furious. While I would've loved to see more street races, I enjoyed what was served.

God, Universal needs to do whatever in their power to keep Lin employed for the next (and supposedly last) entry... and with the crowds last night (the theater I went to sold out on five screens), this film is going to print money for Universal.

2 Fast 2 Furious is also my favorite. It's stupid and silly and doesn't take itself seriously for one second. And it's so much damned fun.

Edit: Or, rather, it was my favorite till this one.

Re: Fast Five (Fast & Furious Five) -- The Reviews and Comments Thread -- Opens 4/29/

So I watched "2 Fast" and "Part 4" last night before going to see "Fast Five" this morning. The movie was stupid and fun as hell at the same time, I loved it. However, I can't remember who the hot chick they brought to the team via motorcycle is. IMDB says she was from part 4, which I seriously watched 12 hours before this, and can't remember her at all.

Anyone else hear it referred to as The Fast and the Furious 5 during a TV spot today? I thought I did, but I was wondering if my ears were playing tricks on me.

Same here. Got the first 2 on dvd but not going to upgrade them. Not that good. This one is definitely blu ray purchase worthy. By far the best of the series. RT has it 25 points higher than the original which is the only one of the series over 50% & I agree. Great early summer movie.

Can somebody put what happens after the credits in a spoiler tag?

So, shit. I left before the credits finished, so I missed the surprise. Anybody care to share (in spoiler tags)?
