Did "Babe" (the talking pig/animals movie)deserve the 1995 Best Picture Nod?

It seems kind of odd that the movie got a best picture nod. Looking at rotten tomatoes, it looks like it still has a 98% approval rating so it was critically loved and all. Having re watched it last night for the first time in maybe 12 years, its still a very good movie (and using real animals/animitronics instead of bad CGI like they prob would today) but prob not BP material, especially with what else was out in 95 that didn't get a nod (Heat, casino, usual suspects dead man walking)

Was curious at what you all think

It was definitely more deserving than Apollo 13 or Il Postino.

'Babe' is a fantastic film.

It's is an example of very good film making and it deserved the nomination.

Absolutely yes. And Pig In The City is even better.

I also think Babe was deserving and that Seven and Casino should have definitely been nominated. A better example for the need of ten nominees than the Dark Knight being snubbed.

It was a great film and very deserving of the nomination. Looking at that list, there were a lot of good films that got passed over. They needed ten Best Picture nominees a hell of a lot more that year than this one. But Babe still holds up and I was so happy at the time it got nominated. I remember trying to talk a friend to go see it. He said "It's a talking pig movie!" and I replied "Well, just imagine how good a talking pig movie would have to be to get nominated for Best Picture. It's that good."

Absolutely. Babe is a wonderful film and the sequel is just as good, if not better.

Yep. A true classic without a single misstep.

Few other films can make that claim, but there is literally nothing wrong with Babe.

To this day, BABE is the only movie I've ever walked out on. I had my then 4 year old daughter with me and even she was bored to tears with it and wanted to leave.

Wow! I've walked out of maybe a dozen movies in my life, but they were complete turkeys or bombs. Where most critics gave them thumbs down but I gave them a shot because I must've like the director or actor that was in it. "Babe" is hardly a walking out of type movie. For me anyway.

I've seen plenty of bad movies. That's for sure. But BABE I just could not sit through for some reason.

I think the only movie I've ever walked out on was Magnolia.

With the expection of "Before Sunrise" and "12 Monkeys", I like Babe more than all of those. I should say that I haven't seen "To Die For", "Delores Claibourne" or "The Crossing Guard".

"The Usual Suspects" and "Seven" have both always struck me as overrated. /ducks

Dolores Claiborne is pretty good flick but it has limited replay value, though it does have great imagery.

It's hard to compare films at times due to the subject matter, I mean there's the issue of genre bias when you are trying to evaluate the merits of Babe versus Seven. I prefer to try to compare movies based on peers than just up or down "does this title exceedingly work as a film" votes.

Sweet Jumpin' Christ... are you me?

To answer the OPs question: without reservation, yes. Better movie than Braveheart IMO.

Oh, I knew how long it was. I just wish someone had warned me that it would be a poorly constructed, pretentious Altman rip-off so I could have saved myself the trouble.

Re: Did "Babe" (the talking pig/animals movie)deserve the 1995 Best Picture Nod?

compared to what else could have been nominated there is no way it deserved it. Having said that it was still a decent film.

Would be very hard to say it was better than Heat, 12 Monkeys, Casino or Dead Man Walking at the very least.
