Louise Fletcher plays such an evil creature, but it's the mother that ends up being the one that's coocoo for cocoa puffs. The character I was most disappointed in was James. I kept waiting for him to finally go and get the kids some outside help that never came. I never read the book, so I didn't get a solid answer in the film as to whether the grandmother actually knew the mother was poisoning the cookies. The fact that the groundsman had already dug four graves makes me think she did. I think the mother got off easy, but she had it coming.

The movie strays too far from the book by the end (which, additionally, looks rushed). The only difference I prefered in the movie is when the mother tells the kids Corey is dead... this scene always feels like a kick in the stomach to me- in the book the mother is upset and spends time with her kids.

Wes Craven had written a graphic script for Flowers, but unfortunately they went with the TV movie-of-the-week type script instead.

edit: looked the movie up on wiki, apparently the director wasn't willing to film the ending that the producers wanted so someone else did. Explains why it looks like it does.

What was up with this?!? Four children get locked in an upstairs room at "the grandmother"'s house after their father (who was also their great-uncle) dies. Their mother has a downstairs room in the house, and she checks in on them for a while, until she realizes that she'd be better off without them. She does, however, show the kids a hidden staircase that leads to the attic, where they spend a lot of time wondering why she never comes to visit them anymore. Strange, strange film that never really builds up to any kind of tension, even when (SPOILER ALERT!!) one of the kids dies from poisoned cookies that "the grandmother" has been leaving for them. Veiled references to incest abound, but they remain veiled due to the film's PG-13 rating. Best line: "Eat the cookie!" High camp value makes this more fun than it has any right to be.

The continuous veiled incest was disturbing.

Would love to see this one remade. It comes across as quite dated and some of the acting is a bit melodramatic.

Incest was full blown in the books. It's even revealed in the prequel that Corrine and her husband thought they were half-uncle and niece but due to an affair were actually half brother and sister.

I still feel scarred by this from watching when I was younger. Not sure why. Might be the whole parent/adult figure cruelty, or maybe the enormous amount of hair on the little curly-haired kids' arms. Reminded me of Moss Man.
