Far Cry 5 - 3/27/18

Film crew in Poplar to shoot scenes for video game

A church on the northeastern Montana prairie that once served family and band members of the late Lakota Sioux Chief Sitting Bull will soon be featured in an upcoming video game.

The Mni-Sda (Still Water) Presbyterian Church, known locally as the Chelsea Church, sits just off U.S. Highway 2 between Poplar and Wolf Point.

Its belfry is what attracted filmmakers to the structure, which was constructed in 1904, and is the oldest church on the Fort Peck Indian Reservation.

Monday, crew members used a drone that repeatedly flew by the belfry filming a man fighting with another man near a hanging bell as a train rolled by on the tracks a half-mile away. The footage mostly will be used for promotion of the video game.
Producers couldn’t release the name of the video game but said production areas for it stretched more than 5,000 miles from California to Montana.

“This is a sequel to an existing global franchise,” said Los Angeles-based Producer Jeff Guillot, who came to the reservation with 11 other crew members from Paris, Los Angeles and Bozeman.

The backstory of the video game, which will be released in September, is of an open world that takes place in an imaginary Hope County, Guillot said.

The location and art departments for the film are manned by a Bozeman crew, including location manager Will Brewster who was charged with the task of finding the perfect belfry for the project.

Brewster scouted 25 church belfries in Montana and had found three in small communities that matched the producer’s criteria: It had to be in the prairie, on a hill, have an open belfry and good angles for shooting.
Staff partially from France. Live-action trailer (which isn't R*'s thing, so it's not likely to be RDR2). Gels with Ubi's "A Far Cry game in the Spaghetti Western style set in the late 19th century Americas" option in a survey from a couple years back.

Umm...hmm. I'm not sure they can top FC4 at this point. I like using modern weapons and really struggled with the last FC entry. I guess this could be fine but we already have Red Dead Redemption 2 coming.

I always thought the weapons were the weakest part of the Far Cry franchise. They never felt right in a first person setting. Going back to that time period would probably correct that issue.

On the other hand, I'm not really itching for a new Far Cry game this year. I still haven't gotten around to playing Primal yet.

I'm with you. FC4 is the only game in the series (well, minus Blood Dragon) I've played, but my favorite part was reveling in the insanity: chucking meat into a base in the hopes that animals would overtake it, seeing how far I could push the gyrocopter and generally flying everywhere, and leveling entire bases with the Buzzsaw.

At the same time, I'm more intrigued by this than I was by Primal, which I never got around to picking up.

Launching that against RDR2 is probably not the best idea...

I agree, although the question is whether or not RDR2 will be delayed into 2018.

Ugh. I have always found the Western setting incredibly unappealing. I like Far Cry, but like many others was pretty burned out after 4 - typical Ubi oversaturation. This is a definite pass.

For me the FC series has been 4/4 (not counting Primal). I am liking the sound of this and will be happy to see how it turns out.

They debunked the notion that it's gonna be a western. They put up a survey asking the community where they want far cry to go and many ideas were tossed. There's no way in hell that they are gonna go western at around the same time RDR 2 hits.

Then again it's Ubisoft and they don't think things through.

It's going to most likely a prequel to FC3 because it's been confirmed that Vas is coming back.

Got any links to it being debunked?

re: Far Cry 5 - 3/27/18

Larry's post aside, I haven't seen anything about it being debunked.

The poll may have been to gauge interest in a concept they already had in production, not necessarily "what should we do next?" Regardless of when production was in full swing, I think we can all agree that it wasn't after the RDR2 announcement, especially for a game supposedly coming out in September.

I mean, I absolutely agree that the 19th century Montana thing is still just a rumor at this point, so it shouldn't be treated as absolute fact, but it sure seems like there's more to support it than not. FWIW, Kotaku's Jason Schreier backed it, and his track record is pretty outstanding.

Great, a Western FPS (assuming it sticks) where I can't hit the broad side of a barn. If the mechanics/difficulty will be like Blood Dragon (which I should have for all intents and purposes loved), then count me out.

More from Jason:

Hey - since my name has been attached to this thing, I just want to be clear: all I've heard is that the new Far Cry is set in Montana. I cannot confirm or deny anything "wild west" or "19th century," and all of that stuff actually feels like a big stretch from bottom-feeding rumor websites. I have no idea whether or not it's true.

re: Far Cry 5 - 3/27/18

There was an image leaked of the island with a skull and I believe they said Vas was in the next one. I'm not 100% but I'll do some digging. I really hope it's not a western style. I do love westerns but I don't believe it gels with the FC universe.

Wasn't a leak; that was straight off Ubi's Facebook page:

That sparked a whole bunch of speculation, but...

We've heard back from Ubisoft PR, who has clarified to us that this was simply a "throwback post" and not a tease for anything.
Whatever's going on, we'll find out next month for sure, though!

^^ That image makes me more excited for another FC game than the prospect of a western setting.

re: Far Cry 5 - 3/27/18

That image makes me think its going back to the roots of the first game, which to me is not a bad thing at all. I think i enjoyed the first game more than any of the others, and i loved all the others. The island setting and swimming between locations and the secrets of being castaway on an island that was a research facility for monsters was awesome. I still remember the last level of that game being pretty touch. Whilst i was curious to see how a Western game would come out, i am very happy to see the route it may be taking.

Just saw it was speculated a remake of the first game. That would be amazing.

They should remaster that original Xbox game. I remember it being good, but just tough at the time.

Super tough. You could be a mile out and crouching in the brush and the most inane foot soldier would start pegging you with an automatic!
