What video game consoles did you buy on release day?
There are several video game consoles that I bought within a few months of their release date, but so far I have only bought one video game console, the Nintendo GameCube, on release day.

On release day, only the PS4 and Switch.
Within the first month or two of release would add SNES, Gamecube, Xbox 360, Wii and Xbone.

Yeah, I bought a PS1 (I guess they were just called PS at the time? Or PSX?), at the full $299 price. Killed me to see it drop $100 around 6 months later. I was wandering around the mall that day, and peaked into a Gamestop and came out $600 poorer (bought a few games and a extra controller).
I think I also bought a Dreamcast on launch day, I remember going around to a few stores, and I found a stack of them at Toys R Us. Probably still my favorite all time system, it hit at the peak of my gaming interest and just had a ton of great games.
I did get a Wii on launch, but held on to it to give to my kids for Christmas.

It's kinda funny that I've owned every MS console, but none of them on release day. Xbox & 360 I got a couple weeks after and XB1 about a year after launch.

None of them so far. The soonest I bought a console was a 360 within a year of its release. I'd pick up a Switch day one but I didn't pre-order so it probably won't happen. I intend to get one as soon as they're available though.

EB was offering a deal on the original Play Station where if you traded in any Genesis or SNES game with box and instructions, you got $10 off towards the Play Station. At the time, I was managing a video store, and we had old games that had been off the shelves for years. I wound up trading in 30 games (and another 30 for a Play Station for the store), and paid $21 for each of them (only had to pay tax), and got the system on release day (Sat Sept 9, 1995)

I think the only console that I've ever purchased at launch was the original Xbox. And I've been an active gamer since the Atari 2600, so that makes it a little crazy. I guess I've always been content with letting a console build up a library before purchasing.

Xbox One.
All others I've owned (NES, Game Boy, SNES, PS1, PS2, N64, Dreamcast, Xbox 360, Wii, DS, 3DS, PS3, PS4...) but didn't buy upon release... it was usually a few months (or years) down the road.

None. I can't say I've ever wanted a console so badly that I froze my butt off to get it when typically the first runs have bugs and games that aren't that spectacular.

I do agree that there's rarely any compelling need beyond "but I want it now!" to buy a console at launch.

One of my friends had the Famicom Disk adapter thing. He also had a Sega Saturn. Another friend... one of his grandparents had an Intellivision and the other had an Atari 2600. It was fun visiting his family. I think he ended up claiming the Intellivsion, but not the Atari.
My friends and I used to rent gaming systems (remember when that was a thing?) I remember specifically renting the Panasonic 3DO for a birthday party. Good times.

Oh, I absolutely remember the ability to rent systems, although I don't believe my family ever did. Funny story on my 2600 - it was technically the family system, but I took that puppy over from a young age. Years later when we got the NES, we gave the 2600 to my uncle, who had it until he gave it back to me when I was around 23. So I still have my original childhood 2600.

My roommate had a PS2, and my wife still has hers, so I've always had access to one. I was a PC gamer in the back half of the '90s, so there's a long gap there. My DS has never actually been played; it has a sketch by Bryan Lee O'Malley on it.

NES, N64, Wii, Gameboy, Gameboy Color (technically my brother's but he left it and I still have it), DS Lite, 3DS, Genesis, Playstation, Playstation 2, Playstation 3, PS Vita, Xbox 360, Xbox 360 Elite (only got it because the first one got the red ring of death), Xbox One. Plus I have the Retron 3 and some off brand Atari type clone (basically its a controller with a built in cartridge slot that attaches with A/V cables).
