I Am Setsuna - old school JRPG

This comes out tomorrow as digital only for PS4 and PC. $40.

It is supposed to be a throwback to the JRPGs of the 16-bit era and apparently takes a few cues from Chrono Trigger.

I am looking forward to it.

I've been looking forward to this as well. I won't be able to get into it for a few weeks but I'll be picking it up for sure. Heard it's a fairly short game, in comparison.

The visuals are AMAZING if you're a fan of hand-drawn:

I've heard Chrono Cross comparisons. Looking forward to reviews.

Same here. I'm interested but I'll wait for some impressions.

76 overall on Metacritic at the moment. Some seemed to love it and give it 90 scores, others gave it 70s.

Re: I Am Setsuna - old school JRPG

I played a couple hours today and so far so good. Great atmosphere, story and characters. The battle system is fun and not too overcomplicated which is a problem in the majority of modern JRPGS. The item system is overly convoluted though. I had to go online just to figure out what items I should be selling to get money and which ones I might need later on. It's never really explained in game. When you win a battle you don't ever get money you get like 8 or 9 different items. Most of them different types of materials with descriptions that don't really tell you anything helpful. Apparently all the one's that come up green you should keep but all the normal white ones you should sell.

Re: I Am Setsuna - old school JRPG

Just a heads up for anyone who doesn't like grinding this game is a grind fest. I grinded for a few hours jumped up like 9 levels and I made it too a boss that is destroying me. I look online and it's recommended I be another 10 levels higher then I am. There is no random encounters in the game the enemies are on the screen and I've never avoided any of them and always wipe out everything in an area before moving on.

Several reviewers said the game is 25 to 30 hours. Wonder how much of that is level grinding then? I have it but haven't gotten around to playing it yet.

I would have been very interested in playing this game if it had been released on the PS3. Does an old-school JRPG really need the PS4?

There's a vita version (which they're not localizing) so I'm kinda surprised there's no PS3 version.

That's a weird question. It's on the PS4 because that's the current system Sony produces.

Re: I Am Setsuna - old school JRPG

I am starting to strongly dislike this game. I've now lost 6+ total hours of playtime due to save points being too spread out and if you die in a battle you have to reload. I'm in one of the getting near the end dungeons now which I've been in for almost three hours. I fought a boss, went through 70-80 battles, went through probably 30 minutes alone of dialogue and now just died and have to reload my save and go through that all over again.

So? How is that relevant to why Sony is releasing it on the PS4 which is the question I answered. 70% of the digital releases on XB1 or PS4 technically could probably be done on the old systems but it makes little financial sense for them to do that.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I don't have time for that type of experience.

So I just started this game and really want to like it. I had this same experience near the beginning. Saved...played through about half an hour of content with story driven moments, given no chance to save. Boss bird comes along and kills me and I get "your journey is over" and it goes back to the menu screen. When I re-load, I am waaaay back. That sucks big time...its almost a non-starter considering this has already happened once in the first hour of play.

Re: I Am Setsuna - old school JRPG

I ended up finishing the game and even went back and completed all of the sidequests. I want to recommend it because it had some great things going on and there were times I really enjoyed playing it but some issues like the one's I previously mentioned were a real pain to get through.

Re: I Am Setsuna - old school JRPG

yeah, i'll definitely give it another shot tomorrow...and it should go easier now that I know what to expect but when you first load up that game and see how far back it took you, that's a gut punch, haha.

I feel like I should just exit/enter the snowy pass forest place (before you find Setsuna) a few times to level up once or twice.
