Hrmmm, after being excited....this article is making me reconsider my potential $60 purchase. Clearly Nintendo is NOT seeing the potential of this.

These are all things I basically expected. As nice as it would to have some sort of expandable option, i'm sure Nintendo didn't want to deal with another "console" to support long term. Kind of figured this was just a standalone thing. For $60, I still think its a neat little thing to have or easily travel with.

How is anyone surprised by that? Of course it wouldn't connect to the internet and have the possibility for more games. Why would anyone think it would?

Hate to say it but that's exactly the kind of thing that Nintendo does to shoot themselves in the foot. Not having this be Internet capable for the possibility of expanding its Virtual Console just seems dumb. If they could get the rights to more games down the line and sell them I don't see why they wouldn't. I'll still get this but that's disappointing.

and then expecting it to play Pac Man Championship Edition DX or Pac Man 256 at a later date.

Not really. Were people expecting it to play N64 or Wii U games? no.

Oh... does Namco already have an infrastructure to play their games like Nintendo?

Be nice if there was one that play SNES games. Zelda Link to the Past, Super Metroid, Actraiser, Breath of Fire, Secret of Mana are few I would love to play on the HDTV.

This just reminds me of the Nintendo version of the Atari Flashback, they release one about every year with more and more games, no internet connection or anything. Thats really what i expected this to me

Exactly. Virtual Console is already established. All they would have had to have done is add a hard drive (probably wouldn't even have to be terribly big) and capability to access the Internet. It might have cost a bit more but I think it would have been a decent idea.

If systems that actually sold a crap ton like the 3DS or Wii wasn't enough get Nintendo to put more effort in to Virtual Console, I can see why they haven't gone the hardware route solely for it. Even still, i'd actually wonder how profitable such a venture would be given the hardware cost just to play emulated games that need to be sold for fairly cheap.

So what happens when this outsells the WiiU? The NX?

I'm definitely pre-ordering. I'm getting a 'hot item' vibe from this for Christmas.

How many games does it come with?

What potential? The Virtual Console never became what we all wanted it to be, why would a $60 throwback console suddenly make the VC more attractive? By that same token, Nintendo has sales figures of VC games. It's probably not worth the effort to support the VC for a few meager sales.

It was silly in 2005 for the Classic Controller as well. Classic Nintendo, get a product close to being great but stumbling at the finish line.

I guess I could feasibly put another extender where the Blu-Ray is, but there's hardly any space for it. It would be very cluttered. Plus I have a Slingbox there as well, which makes it crowded.
I only have one port- gotta switch out and fumble among four devices. Not that bad once I got used to it.

Even though they made the games things an change after this many years when it comes to rights and reselling. Sure does limit media in general though. Shows never released because of music rights. A game system like this that would be even cooler if it had the complete library.

Not interested in just getting an HDMI Switch?

I suppose that's true. I wonder why they didn't just dump everything available on Virtual Console on this though. Unless space was the issue or there are some rights issues possibly. There are a number of NES games available that aren't here that are available to download. At least most of the big stuff is here but there are some missing titles I'd like to have seen on this (Mega Man 2 is on here yet 1 and 3-6 are all absent, no Mario The Lost Levels is sort of a strange omission too). I guess at the end of the day for $60 I can't complain too much about this lacking some things though.

For sure. I bought a 4 in 1 "smart" hdmi splitter last year from amazon for around 12 dollars. One of the best purchases I ever made. If you hook up your components in the correct order you don't even have to do anything to switch between them with the smart splitters.

Back on topic, I'm going to get me one of these. Mostly for my daughter who is 8 but loves simple video games. I to wish it was Super Tecmo Bowl instead of the first one. I still remember circling the 8 bit Nintendo in the Sears catalog for Christmas back in the day and it was around 89 dollars back then and only came with the Super Mario Bros./Duck Hunt game. "Santa" also gave me Excitebike and Kung Fu to go with it. One of my best Christmas memories ever.

That's a good idea - but I'll have to locate the other cables. Hopefully they're all here.

Edit: just found them.

Switching isn't that bad now that I have the positions memorized for the consoles, and going into Roku and the cable unit is easy.

Though with a switcher, I'd be more inclined to use cable more. I might need one with 5 or 6 if I get more devices.

Edit: Ordered. Why didn't I do this a year ago?

One Nintendo related thing with an hdmi switcher... I've never figured out how to prevent the wiiu from taking over the switch whenever it's off and goes into standby mode (or whatever it's called when it's looking for updates).

Poor Sega. They released a Genesis version of this exact thing a couple years ago which came with two controllers (both a wired and wireless versions), more games (80) and cartridge support for less money ($40) and nobody cared.

He is launching 6 games for the console release. And if you still had all your carts already you wouldn't need to buy anything right away.

But he does release PowerPak's that have compact flash cards where you can load them up with certain files.
