I think you're being overly-dramatic here. I've been playing for a month. I've spent $0. I was about to hit the 60 cap myself. I have a few 5* characters with purple gear.I'm currently ranked #349 in my PvP and that's because I haven't really been trying to rank up until lately. I've been fine coasting to stay in the top 1000.
In fact, I'd be doing a lot better if I didn't save 2500 crystals for the 8x pack but would have just done energy refreshes. That's been pretty lucrative in the last few days. It's all about purple gear farming.
How did you get 5*? Shard farming? I haven't even opened up GW yet (only L38) so maybe that will change things for me.
I'm also frustrated that I'm getting nothing out of Bronze packs when people are getting 4* super characters.

From the PvP Squad Arena, just finish your 3 battles a day (+100) and try to be top 1000 (+500). That's 600 credits a day which means you will get 15 Sidious shards every two days. It won't take long to unlock the 4* version then 5* will follow shortly.
Luminara is your goal from GW, but that is a little more stingy unless you can consistently progress far as the rewards are 100, 100, 200, 200, 200, 400 every other node. This means if you can finish 8 battles a day in that, you're looking at the same drop rate for her as Sidious above. Plus you can farm her shards from Hard battles to slightly speed up the process.
Cantina is even slower as, unless you do energy refreshes, you can only really get 5 shards every other day (of course leveling up gives bonus energy, but I'm only leveling every 2-3 days now). This sucks because I really want many of the characters in there but it's soooooo slow this way. Some of the characters can be farmed separately too, so that's nice.

I'll be honest, I have no idea how that segregation works or when you're attacked or what happens when you lose on defense. It seems very inconsistent to me.

That's absolutely correct. As I recall, it costs 80 to unlock him? That's a 4* character.
10 = 1*
25 = 2*
50 = 3*
80 = 4*
But upgrading is a different scale:
15 -> 2*
25 -> 3*
30 -> 4*
65 -> 5*
85 -> 6*
100 -> 7*
Edit: Well, I guess it's the same scale, just a summation of the upgrades. Rest assured that you're not farming useless shards before you unlock a character. Yes, it would be nice to have him earlier than 80 shards, but the end result is the same.

Agreed. Pinata is full of knowledge bombs. I think once I get Sidious and Luminara I'll be in a much better position.
It'd be really nice if we could see our opponents lineup in the arena before hand, but I guess that's part of the strategy.

Well I was going for Fives with catina rewards but everything I've read about GW says I need Poe instead. Will cost me a few days (I was only at 18/50 for Fives), but seems like more worth it in the end.
By the end of next week, I should have DS and Luke. May try for Old Daka next the boards love her (Lumi obviously from GW, but I won't hit 40 until Sunday I think).

That's not much help! 
I do have Han already because I, again, I was going for a wide cast of characters before I knew to focus on Sidious. Probably makes the most sense to go back to him and promote him rather than grinding just to unlock an assassin droid.

Does anybody here have Savage Opress as a character?
I keep facing him as the final boss of the AGI gear challenge and he decimates my entire squad with one strike. But when I check his abilities on the character screen, he has nothing listed that attacks EVERYBODY. I'm wondering if it's a hidden bonus that gets unlocked after leveling up his special and is not initially evident. It's literally the most powerful single attack from anything I've faced in this game so far and it's only a Tier 1 challenge. He's definitely OP compared to any of the other bosses in the other challenges. I can finish the Tier 3 Ability Mats challenge against Darth Vader with less problems. It's ridiculous.
