Santa snagged this at BBY for $60. I'm hoping for a good sale before Xmas for Doctor and either BtTF or Portal levels and a couple of the fun packs. We have the Infinity 1 & 2 but have skipped 3.0 because my son does not play either of the earlier ones, but damn we both want the 3.0 SW figures, especially the new FX figures. At least Dimensions seem to be fuller levels vs Infinity.
I hope they add a sandbox mode later on.

The Level/Team/Fun Packs are on sale 25% off at Lego.com for Black Friday with free shipping. Little bit better than BB w/GCU.

Wife got me 4 fun packs at TRU tonight ... Buy one get second 60% off. I got Emmit, wicked witch. Laval chima and Nya ninjago. I probably shouldn't have gotten Emmit...he doesn't unlock any areas that wild style doesn't... Right? I tried to get different franchises to open up their areas

Don't know of any lists, but it's pretty much just what you think. A Scooby-Doo character opens Scooby world, Ghostbusters character (in January) will open Ghostbusters world, Super Hero opens DC World, etc..
For the little side quests/tasks most of the characters are needed somewhere. I don't recall needing Bart, Gollum, Eric, Laval, or Kai for anything in particular. The other characters seem to cover what they can do. We only used a few of the vehicles - most of them go unused.

per Target Cartwheel, "25% off Fun, Level and Team packs, excludes Starter packs. Expires 12/15/2015".
A slight bump above the GCU discount. Not sure of any other discounts going on at the moment that can be stacked. Hopefully some type of sale in next weeks ad will add a little more of a discount. Unlikely I know, but one could only hope.

i would love to get the Scooby Doo pack and the BTTF pack. However, I am fortunate to be getting the Starter pack and 4 fun packs for xmas. Shocked my wife agreed since this is my 3rd Toys to Life game.

Can one use the 20% off your entire purchase coupon shoppers got on Black Friday as well? That's four total discounts (the ad, the coupon, the cartwheel, and Red Card.) Looking at the fine print on the Cartwheel deal, it looks as if it should work...
If that's the case, the LEGO Dimensions packs would be (to paraphrase my dad) so cheap, you couldn't afford *not* to buy them.

I swung by my nearest Target and they didn't have anything I need/want on the shelf. No Doctor Who or Unikitty, just tons of Wave 1 stuff.

Just a head's up, Target switched the expiration date on the Lego Cartwheel discount from 12/15 to 12/12.
Buy now and get price adjustments next week.

Only if the CS rep is an idiot.
I ended up buying all 4 level packs due to being able to get the cartwheel to stack with a walmart pm. Eventually Target is just going to program the system to invalidate cartwheel after PM or just force PM transactions to be separate from your other purchases so we can't use cartwheel.

Deal of the Day is Lego Dimensions Level, Team and Fun packs. Stacks with GCU. Makes them $17.99, $14.99 and $8.99 respectively

Re: LEGO Dimensions (Multi-Console, 9/27/2015)
Amazon has the starter pack on sale for $69.99 and Target has a 40% off cartwheel. IF you can get them to use the cartwheel after the PM, you could get it for $42. I don't know how I feel about buying those packs though. They are incredibly pricey and just asking for pieces to get sucked up in the vacuum.
