I do the same thing and they blink like they are going to go off but then the lights on them continually blink and the microphone stays on for at least 5 minutes or more. I have no idea what is up but they have always been like that. Luckily I use rechargeable batteries so it isn't a big deal.

Re: Rock Band 4 (XB1/PS4, 2015)
I've completely replaced my RB2 drum kit. After repairing it a few times and constantly replacing broken cymbals I invested in the MIDI adapter and a Yahama kit. The game has a whole different feeling playing on a real kit.
The RB3 KB I had died one day. It just stopped connecting to the 360 so I had to replace that.
I plan on getting a couple of RB4 guitars but I may get the Strum Fix Plus and replace the strums on my original guitars since they are getting mushy feelin.

Harmonix says 'don't throw away your old Guitar Hero controllers'
In an interview with Business Insider UK, Rock Band 4 developer Harmonix has confirmed that the new game will support old peripherals... including all your old Guitar Hero guitars.
"We're planning to support everything that we can: That includes all of the old 'Rock Band' controllers, and all the old 'Guitar Hero' controllers," said project director Daniel Sussman.
"Our position is really all about respect for our consumers and for the money that they have spent to get into the game space in the first place. They spend a fortune on games: on consoles, on hardware, and we're sensitive to that."
"We play those games too. We buy all the same stuff. A world where you need to have three different guitars and two drum sets and all this stuff is...we don't want to support that world."
I love you, Harmonix.

The campaign, meanwhile, is perhaps Rock Band 4’s most interesting reach in the gameplay design department. It is, effectively, a Rock Band RPG. “We’re just working really hard at making everything feel like you are living this story, feeling what it’s like to be a musician playing gigs, playing shows,” said Rock Band 4 designer Alli Thresher. “We want you to step up to the mic and interact with them, tell jokes, have them respond to your jokes, you know? Everything’s about all the stuff that all of us might have experienced, and want to share it with the people playing the game.”

"even the old, somewhat-obscure Rock Band Stage Kit will be compatible with Rock Band 4...probably."
Oh man, crossing my fingers they can get all the old instruments working properly.

Oh shit "essentially a Rock Band RPG". I hope it's even half as in depth as I've always wanted them to make. The "interacting with the crowd" thing sounds really lame though.

Rock Band 4 will also give expert game singers a new way to test their skills and express their vocal creativity: freeform melodies. “For hard and expert players, there was this premium on just hitting that exact pitch that was authored into the songs,” LoPiccolo said. “And what we discovered was that a lot of really good singers were constrained by that; they couldn’t have the kind of fun – the expressive fun – that they wanted to have as singers. So, we’ve added a feature now where as long as you’re singing in tune, you can kind of color outside the lines. You don’t have to stick with the prescribed part; you can make up your own harmonies on the fly, and as long as you sing them in tune, the game will give you credit for it.
I'm still super bummed about no keyboard. I get trimming the fat and focusing on what made the game popular in the first place, but I easily logged more hours on the keyboard in Rock Band 3 than any other instrument.

My only problem with the keyboard was that, during parties, when the keyboard was busted out, it reduced the number of available tracks significantly. Maybe that's just how our friends had their system set up... but it was annoying, since they really didn't have a ton of keyboard-enabled songs, despite having probably 2000 total songs in their library.

I bet keyboard support shows up later. Right now they probably want to focus on their "core" instruments/players.
Can't watch at work. Have they said anything about harmonies? I'd be more bummed about them not returning than keyboards.
I want to echo whoever said this should be retitled "Rock Band 4-Ever" if it's going to be their "last" game release (and make it more of a platform).
SIDENOTE: Rocket, check your PMs, please.

Keyboards may show up later but you will have the same problems.
Bringing in keys and Pro late in the series they authored their own demise basically.
No pre-RB3 songs or DLC are playable. Which is about 90% of the catalog and no one was willing to pay extra for re-authored tracks.
Remember all the backlash when they started putting out the back catalog for RB3 and people had to re-buy them to get keys and pro? They pulled the plug on that. That is what killed keys and pro.
To make keys and pro a valid option going forward for the entire series they need to re author the ENTIRE back catalog which would be a major project on its own. Otherwise there would always be this major gap in the back catalog that keys will never be able to play. Ever.
Which is not fair to keys players or to the other band members to make the keyboardist sit there and just twiddle his thumbs.
So I really don't see how keys can come back UNLESS they are a paid for upgrade. Even then you would still have the pre-RB3 catalog issue.

Re: Rock Band 4 (XB1/PS4, 2015)
I get what you all are saying about keyboards limiting the track selection, but you can use the keyboard to play bass and guitar tracks (bass makes more sense) so it's not as if the older songs are totally unplayable. Besides, just because there is a keyboard doesn't mean people need to use it. It's just another controller, so I can't imagine it would be too difficult to implement support.

Re: Rock Band 4 (XB1/PS4, 2015)
The whole concept of the game is that you get to experience on some level what being a keyboard player in a band is like.
You see keyboards needed the Pro mode to capture that same experience you get when playing the other instruments. You needed more than 5 lanes to really experience playing a KB using both the black and white keys together.
