Sure. I meant the games. My interest in GH faded after it was clear RB was the better platform. I just never made the effort to buy into the RB stuff, since I only ever played it at a friend's house. A friend who is now on the other side of the planet.

I thought I would be interested in this and do have several hundreds of dollars tied up in DLC. However, after thinking about it and more plastic instruments piling up I will likely pass. I will wait and see how this pans out.

I will likely only get a guitar. The drums take up too much space and no one really liked playing them among my friends.

As someone else mentioned, a subscription based DLC model would be a very, very smart move. Especially if they can hook it into an existing cloud-based music service.

Yeah that was me. Just to elaborate, I'm in for this new game regardless, but I'll be VERY picky about the songs I outright purchase (since I'm starting from zero, unlike most of you). If they make an all-access subscription option, I'll gladly throw the extra money at them without hesitation (assuming it's $30/year... maybe up to $60, but don't tell them that). I'm not interested in building a catalog of 2000+ songs like some of you already have.
I think folks with existing catalogs that they want to carry over won't be as interested in a subscription, which is why I think outright purchases should still be offered for every track, for everyone who wants to continue down that route.
But I just don't see NEW players building massive catalogs now. If that's the only option, this game will be even more 'niche' than it already is.
Also, like 'mallet, I just want one or two guitars. I couldn't care less about the microphone, personally, and drums/keys are nice to have, but not necessary. Although I'd love to give myself a shot at playing WHIPLASH on drums, obviously.
edit: also, KILLER IDEA based on flashburn's suggestion of tying it to an existing subscription service like Spotify, Rdio, Beats, etc. ...
If the song is part of the official RB catalog, then everything is as you would expect.
BUT
If folks want to play a song that ISN'T part of the official RB catalog, but IS in the subscription service's catalog (10million or more songs at this point), there can be some sort of Creator Hub, where the community can create and rate their own gameplay and difficulty levels for any song they want. It's like the homebrew songs discussed in the other RB thread, but given more legitimacy by Harmonix and the streaming service. So if I want to play every Joel Plaskett song in RB4, I can, as long as I put forth the effort to tabulate the tracks in the creator hub. Those unofficial Dream Theater tracks that were posted in the other RB thread could then be played by a whole new generation of RB players, for example.

My elder daughter sings decently enough (at least until her balls drop) and my younger is interested in starting percussion in the school band so, along with my upper-middle-class-plastic-guitar skills, I'm really looking forward to cultivating a full band finally! The time is right!

Update: Harmonix has confirmed the keyboard will not be returning in Rock Band 4.
There will be no Pro Guitar or key support in Rock Band 4. We will continue to support "Pro" mode for Drums," the company said in a statement.

Oh well, as long as I don't need to buy new instruments, I'm in

No, YOU are MY new best friend!
Joel's the fucking man. I saw him play in a church once. It was brilliant.
I keep saying that he and Matthew Good would make for an amazing live tour.

Yeah, all I really care about are the drums at this point. Though the amount of space that shit took up sucked.

I get that a lot of people here would like a $30 yearly subscription model but I don't see it working. It would be a greal deal for someone who buys DLC every week but it would be a horrible deal for Harmonix.
Lets say you spend $5 a week on DLC. I know the pricing wouldn't allow that but lets call it an average. That's $260 a year. Of course the consumer would want that $230 savings but how is it gonna benefit Harmonix? This thing is gonna live or die by the built-in audience that was happy to fork over weekly DLC money so why mess with that?

The guitar looks good (though the color is more Telecaster-y than Stratocaster-y), and the pickguard looks good, but they don't gel together at all, for my money.
"I Still Believe" is up on store.playstation.com now, by the way.

Re: Rock Band 4 (XB1/PS4, 2015)
I didn't say $30 a year, that was Dan. I just said a subscription based service. I don't think $30 a year would make financial sense for them either. Probably something like $10 a month... but again, if they do it, they need to tie it in to a existing subscription based music service.
My point is only that I would confidently bet that the "average" RB3 owner probably spent less than $30/year on DLC. If Harmonix can get most of the average or below average spenders to pay a subscription, it makes more financial sense than sticking to the existing model. I know most people here are on the higher end of the spectrum, spending hundreds per year on DLC, but Harmonix needs to offer something that makes sense to folks who don't want to worry about "buying" the songs each week, month, etc. They (meaning: I) just want to play anything that's available, and I'd pay up to an extra $60/year (max) to do it. And that's knowing full-well that if I end my subscription, I can't play those songs ever again (or until I resubscribe).
It's like EA Access, but for Rock Band music only. Some will buy in immediately (me), some will hesitate, and some will never see it as a valuable option, which is fine. But it'd be outright dumb if Harmonix stuck to DLC purchases only. Just my opinion, of course.
edit: and they NEED to partner with a big subscription service like Spotify, Beats, whoever. If for no other reason, than to manage the licensing of the music. Those services have got it down pretty well, and Harmonix would benefit from that (see previous post on my "Killer idea")

Well, my hope is that the instruments are built to be sturdier. I've had 3 guitars of which two were used for parts to keep the third one going. Now to make the mics wireless, similar to those used in Lips. I hate being tethered to the console. I would think this is going to cost a lot to keep and transfer some of those song licenses and hope we don't lose any more out of the catalog.

I have one guitar with a key that doesn't work, and I didn't bother to fix it because we'd stopped playing. Not even sure if that stuff is worth fixing or if it's like so many other electronics and are cheaper to just replace.

I'm excited about this - once I ditched my 360s (yep, I had two) I sold off all the Rock Band stuff too.
I still have a Guitar Hero guitar but that's because I painted a custom The Who's Tommy faceplate for it. It's more of a decoration than anything.
