What Sony and MS have done or have not done is irrelevant. Weak support is weak support is weak support.

Nintendo's trying to cash in on the toy-to-life category while it's hot without having software behind it. It's a good concept at the wrong time.

I'm not dismissing them outright, in fact I already have wave 1 preordered, I'm just waiting on them revealing something else before I preorder entire waves instead of cherry picking.
If consumers buy them without actually understanding what they do that's on them. They are Smash-stylized with a Smash logo smacked on each box.

I'm sure we will get a Nintendo-themed game at some point, but right now they are add-on to Smash.

Yep. I'm really loving my Wii U but let's not pretend Nintendo has done much of anything right in regards to this system. Amiibos are just another glaring example.

I just can't see how the average consumer is going to understand this:

"So, uh, these Mario figures are for a Skylanders game?"
"No, they're for Super Smash Bros"
"Oh, ok, wait, there's a Super Smash Bros for the WiiU and one for the 3DS? And if I have an old 3DS I can't use these figures unless I buy something else? Ok. So what do they do in the game? Unlock characters?"
"No, see, when you use them, they let a CPU player gain experience and saves it on a little chip so that you can bring your CPU player over to a friends house to play. And it'll do other stuff for other nintendo games. But there's no game that needs them."

I mean, the average consumer couldn't seem to understand that the WiiU wasn't just an add on for the Wii, so...

Nintendo Life posted a pretty good summary of some of the potential issues with Amiibo.

I updated this thread with a poll while I was at it.

We can play the hypothetical game with Skylanders and Disney if you want. (I still have no idea what there is a Marvel release and 2.0 release - are they two different games? Can the figures be used in either?)

It really doesn't matter. They are Smash-branded, they look like trophies from Smash, and (some) retailers are setting up displays with a TV to explain what they do. How much information do you need? Many consumers don't even know a Blu-ray player can play DVDs or Audio CDs.

But you know what will happen? They will sell.

I don't really get them nor am I really interested as only a 3DS owner anyway. Even if they were more like Skylanders/Disney Infinity I haven't really been interested in those type of titles anyway.

Toys R Us is having a 3-for-$33 sale on Amiibo next week. If you're doing the whole Gamers' Club Unlocked thing, they'll be around $10.40 a pop at Best Buy.

re: Amiibo figurine discussion (Wii U / New 3DS / Switch)

LootCrate partnered with Nintendo for an Amiibo distribution deal, but it...sucks?

Week 1: Mario, Donkey Kong, Kirby, & Pikachu amiibos, "exclusive sticker", & wristband
Week 2: Fox, Samus, Yoshi, & Peach amiibos, & a cinch bag
Week 3: Zelda & Luigi amiibos and "ultra rare t-shirt"

...all for a one-time payment of $155 or for $165 (divided into $55 payments over 3 weeks). That's $130-plus-tax worth of figures you can't pick-and-choose and you can't get all at once for $155. I don't really see the point.

Just a few more days...! Which figures are you thinking about getting from the first wave? I just placed an order for Samus. I would've gotten Link, but I hate, hate, hate that stupid yellow stand.

Did Samus, Fox, and Mario through Toys 'R Us. Probably would have went with Link over Mario, but like you, the yellow stand turned me away.

I'm probably going to get Mario, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Link, Fox, Samus, Pikachu, and Kirby. Basically, just the characters from the first game.

I found out my wife got me the Loot Crate deal for an early Christmas gift. So, I'll have those 10. I'll probably get them all eventually.

My Target broke street date on these and had Mario, Pikachu, Fox, and Peach hanging on the shelves for sale. They also had marked spots for the rest of them.

Meta Knight amiibo is exclusive to Best Buy

We know of two Amiibos that are retailer exclusive now. The other, again, is Shulk (GameStop).

That is a pretty cool figure. At least we can use our unlocked discount on it.

At some point, I'll probably get a Samus, but that'll be it, and only because that one looks cool - I still haven't the slightest idea what these things actually do.

Samus is the only one I've seen with my own two eyes, and it does look terrific. A little smaller than I thought (just because of the pose?) but still very cool. It'll be dangerous to see Fox and Donkey Kong in person...we'll see what happens.

I thought Link, Starfox and Samus looked cool. Didn't buy any of them though and probably won't.

Might get a Sonic for my son when it comes out since he loves the character so much
