The main appeal of the XB1X is the improved graphics, it doesn't have any exclusive games; all games play on all XB1 consoles.

That's like asking why didn't they just release the PS4 Pro instead of the original Playstation, or the XBX1 instead of the original Xbox. Technology changes over time, and costs for ever more storage/memory/processing power drop.

An XB1X released at the time of the launch of the original XB1 would've cost probably double, around $1000, if it was even technically feasible at the time to cram that much processing power onto a single chip.

so if you're not 4K as of yet and don't plan to do so in near future, the new XBOX won't really make sense, correct?

Not necessarily. For example, with Rise of the Tomb Raider, there's 3 "enhanced" modes. 2 are 4K modes, but the 3rd plays 1080p at 60fps, instead of the 30fps on the original Xbox One. Other games are likely to have similar enhanced modes for 1080p TVs.

Have they mentioned if they are going to have a boost type mode like the Pro does? Anything to help with load times and such?

Basically, the XB1X is always in boost mode when playing un-enhanced games (including 360 titles). It's not a switch that needs to be flipped on. Snippets from Eurogamer's rundown:

What this means in practice is that games that cannot fully sustain their target frame-rate on Xbox One stand a really good chance of doing so on Scorpio.
"We've taken the approach that we do with 360 [games] on Xbox One, where you will never see a torn frame, because we have enough performance there to ensure that."
A popular technique in games development is to adapt dynamic resolution scaling. The idea here is straightforward: when a game is in danger of losing its lock on its performance target, be it 30fps or 60fps, the title scales down the image, running it at a lower resolution in order to maintain a smoother frame-rate.

. . .

With the additional performance of the Scorpio Engine, we expect to see those titles hit the maximum render resolution that those titles support," says Goossen. "As you know, we can't boost it to 4K, but definitely the maximum resolution the game supports, we should be able to run it."
"We built into the hardware the capability of overwriting all bilinear and all trilinear fetches to be anisotropic," Andrew Goossen reveals. "And then we've dialled up the anisotropic all the way up to max. All of our titles by default when you're running on Scorpio, they'll be full anisotropic."
"Even though a lot of this content will be 1080p, we'll have the benefit of HEVC, the ultra high bit-rate, so we'll be able to do those retroactive screen captures at a really high quality."
In a world where a Battlefield 1 campaign level can take anything up to two minutes to load, this one is especially welcome. "We're able to say that game loads will be fundamentally faster," Goossen reveals. "There are three ways we say that - one of which is the CPU boost. The 31 per cent CPU boost in terms of clock will help games that are CPU-bound in terms of their IO."
"The second one is that we've that we've improved the hard disk speed," Goossen adds. "We're actually promising developers a 50 per cent improvement in overall bandwidth for the purposes of driving 4K textures, but this also helps us in this situation where you're running existing Xbox One and Xbox 360 titles. They will also benefit from the faster hard disk."
"If Xbox One games take five gigs, we have three gigs left over. We do a file system cache on that. Any repeated IOs... if you go into a race and come out or if you go into a fight and come out, we've got a nice boost right there for load times as well."

Ah, well that's good to hear then. Maybe it will help with game install times from disc as well.

Digital Foundry has a Halo Wars 2 XB1/PC/XB1X comparison up, with the caveat that the XB1X build isn't final.

I still want to bet that you will see some Scorpio consoles in the wild on release day once some of the pre-orders fall through. I don't see a reason in pre-ordering the regular version, even though there isn't much of a difference between the two.

Yeah, I'm considering canceling my pre-order. I don't know...
If I do, I should probably sell my S sooner than later, just to make up the difference a bit.

I have a Scorpio edition pre-ordered. I prefer the simple black aesthetics of the regular.

What am I missing beside the annoying green lettering and the "prestige"?

XB1X games can have a variety of enhancements, including running at 1080p with better framerates and/or additional effects.

But it's not mandatory to upgrade, and you're not going to lose out by not being able to play any games if you don't upgrade. It's just a better overall experience, similar to a PC upgrade.

...although there's hasn't been word if there'll be a Kinect adapter promotion with the X like there was with the S, so you'll probably have to pony up $40 for an adapter. Fingers crossed, though.

Re: Xbox One: S $249 Now / X $499 November 7 2017

I cancelled my preorder today. I realized nothing they've said about the X appeals to me in anyway over the S and I have better things to spend $500 on.
